I was thinking about something and whats the ruling on grabbing your opponent and following through with an attack? Like if he punches at you can you block, grab and then throw him to the ground? I was just curious because it seems pretty close to godmodding the other character but I don't see how any other way it could be done.

Also I'm not actually in any fight where this is relevant I just wanted to know what you guys thought.

I've been under the assumption that you can say "You intend to grab them, and follow through with an attack" which then means if they avoid the grab, you don't attack.

Grappling has never been very well done in rps, anyway. However if they are going through with a punch, you can easily just say you caught it, and then say "attempt to break/counter" blah blah. Catching a punch that comes isn't a godmod because there is really little way to avoid getting your punch caught if it's done right. If you expect it that's a different story.

From your point of view:

Punch Comes
Catch and attempt to hit
Fist is pulled away before punch or hit with punch

It's that simple.

Now, don't listen to me when I say this as I have no clue what the official site stance is.

I read the rules of the role play a long while back on the site, I think it referred to God modding as Cheeze and pretty much said you could god mod to a minor extent long as it wasn't done in a completely retarded unlikely manner or likely to kill a foe. Admin never complained that I threw Sabers character to the ground in a JLT match.

From my experience it comes down to the attack and the counter (which is what the grab and counter punch is.) If your arms are down low and someone punches at you the chance of your reaching up and grabbing their incoming attack is MUCH slimmer than if your hands were up near your chin/temple. That said if the attack is basic "straight punch" the defender can dodge (the easiest maneuver), take the hit (doesn't always have to be a kill shot or severe injury), or counter (the hardest to do no matter what you're fighting as it has to be written correctly to be valid.)

So assuming your character has good reflexes, some skill in hand to hand, and is against an opponent who is LESS or EQUALLY skilled in that technique/combat he/she could counter an incoming punch. If your character has no previous hand to hand skills the chance of taking on a boxers punch and turning it on him is slim and could be ruled a godmod.

In most cases on this site if you roleplay it out the most realistic way possible it will pass. Common sense is the biggest "rule" on this site. As long as your fist isn't magically appearing/making shields/deflecting legitimate attacks you should be able to pass a defense/counter.

If the person is just as fast as you, remember that you only have a 20% chance of dodging or countering, statistically speaking.

As someone who teaches and trains martial arts, I would just like to say this is a load of shit.

I have to fight against goblin jedi, he has +2 jedi robes with no dexterity penalty and a saberstaff that deals 2d8 damage with +3 strength. I swing lightsabers. I roll to hit, and completely miss. goblin jedi swings lightsaber and rolls a natural twenty. My face explodes and I die.

They are the same speed as you, dodging or countering a punch is a bugger to do to begin with. Someone who is faster or moving at the same speed will make it much more difficult to dodge or counter. Also considerable other variables. Xyrael what are you talking about?

What is it with people on the internet needing to act snobby about how supposedly awesome they are at martial arts? It's disgusting.

It wasn't really him specifically. It just seems like every OOC thread obligatorily has at least one or two people who are like "well, I took a karate class at a friend's birthday party when I was 11 and therefore I am a martial artist so you should respect my snobby opinion on the matter". It's some kind of smug sense of self-entitlement that permeates such threads all across the intertubes. And it annoys the shit out of me because at least 95% of these people actually don't know shit about martial arts.

The difference here is I do know what I'm talking about. Being able to dodge has a lot less to do with natural quickness and a lot more with training.

Also, it's Muay Thai, not Karate that I train :D
