Your weapon was on the opposite side of your body. You'd have to dodge or eat the strike. Grik would have had to have been reasonably close to you to strike underhanded.

Btw, I saw your Duel thread in the Jedi OOC. I didn't want to post in there, since my Paddie's far from ready to duel with anyone...but would you mind a duel with Salazar in the near future? It'd be for story purposes more than anything. I foresee both our charries developing quite a bit depending on how their mid-duel conversation goes :P.
