Getting slightly more interested in it. Not sure how I feel about them going super serious or gritty with the material. I get that Godzilla is supposed to be some giant monster movie, but the movies a bit before and the weird 90s one seem to just paint it weird for me. Suspense and terror don't really come to mind when I think of giant monsters anymore. Could just be my anime background, but now I just keep asking where the giant robots are.

Apparently there are supposed to be other giant monsters to fight Godzilla so I will just hope that is where the entertainment comes from.
Yeah, no.

The original Toho film back in the 50's was intended to be a completely serious picture, reflecting on the nature of nuclear research and the arrogance of man when it comes to his manipulation of nature. They did the best they did with what they could at the time, it was only as the franchise progressed from that point forward, that Kaiju cinema began to incorporate it's campy and more obtuse elements.

Gareth Edwards has talked in interviews recently about the fact that in designing this new iteration of the monster, he tried to imagine that the original Toho film makers actually saw this beast, and that the original costume was just a low rent, low budgeted attempt to depict what they saw on film, with this new monster being what they actually saw. So yeah, it won't be the exact same design, this thing is going to be enormous, which I would wager is another reason why they've chosen to reveal him so scarcely, it's as if the viewer simply cannot comprehend the shear scale of what they are witnessing.

There will also be other monsters in this film, a good few from all reports I've read so far. Edwards has described Godzilla's role in the film as "a force of nature" and interestingly "an anti hero", which makes me even more interested to see just how the hell he is going to get that across with this more thematically serious and realistic interpretation of the material.

It might tie into a quote from Ishiro Honda, wherein he attempted to explain why it was people started rooting for the monsters in his films. He basically figured it was because (accounting for depictions mind you) that giant monsters can basically be a problem without them being evil. Due to their sheer size and power, if they even approach a city, they represent a threat and danger to which humanity will respond, and then they'll defend themselves which causes more trouble.

So with that in mind, it might turn out Godzilla simply doesn't care about humanity either way so long as it stays out of his path, which is convenient then when other giant monsters don't realise the same.

I referenced that it was more recently that the Godzilla franchise got campy. I get that when it first came out it was most likely taken and intended to be serious. It's like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. When they first came out they were serious, gritty, and pretty damn violent. Now they are a giant kid friendly franchise.

I wasn't born in 1950. I grew up with Godzilla being this:

and the movies where it treated Godzilla fighting another monster as some sort of heavyweight boxing bout.

It's hard for me to divorce what I know and saw in Godzilla to try and take a non-campy version seriously even if it was meant to be taken seriously from the beginning. Just meshes weird. Not saying it is bad just saying it will be awkward for me to watch.

If they can pull it off, cool. I am, like you, interested to see how they do it.

Woo! Big monster thing with claws and big teeth! Roar! Smash! Win!

I'm mildly interested. Not on the top of my list, but not on the bottom either.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any other movies I am interested in aside from Captain America and the new X-Men. I'll most likely see it.

Depends on what I have going on. My brothers always like a good monster movie - so i'll probably end up seeing it to. xD

...Admittedly, if you were a fan of that stuff, if you haven't checked out Godzilla Final Wars, you really should. The Director made it as basically the biggest monster mashup in Godzilla's history, and a throwback to the 70s era. Its plot isn't the strongest around, but you also get the big G vaporising a certain poser.

...Which admittedly is pretty ironic for me to say, considering that growing up with Godzilla, for me, was the 90s cartoon based on the film. Honestly I kinda like to keep the two separate in my head, because the cartoon was actually pretty awesome.

I know I'm a small minority on this, but I actually get entertainment out of the 1998 film. Being 7 years old in America at the time with that genius marketing campaign and stuff, it sucked me in. Even noticing it's flaws, I still like it. Other than the American one, I've only seen the 1954 original and Godzilla 2000. Also worth noting, the Toho Godzilla actually fought the American one in the shortest fight in the franchise.

Part of why I recommended it on the previous page. Also whilst its not subbed, what the dude basically says is along the lines of:

'I knew that tuna-eating monster was useless!'

So the new trailer just got released and again I liked it a lot, quite a few nods to the original film were pretty evident which is always great and seems to indicate that they're respectful of the original material overall.

Anybody catch that flying beast diving into the water, and what looks like a giant scorpion tail near the end?

Rodan and some other insect-like monster perhaps?

Overall, I'm impressed with the tone they're establishing.

That must be the real "villain" of the film, since the director has said that Godzilla is more of an anti-hero. Harkens back to hold movies where Godzilla would show up, kick another monster's ass, and then wander back into the sea.

My excitement for this film just went through the roof. Again.

About the flying monster. It could be rodan made to look more batlike then pterodactyl like. Though if we're going really obscure to throw people for a loop, it could be Varan, or potentially the giant prey mantis kaiju Kamacuras.

The speculation is absolutely teeming.

I've watched this trailer four times now; I can't get over that last look of Godzilla's face before the doors close. Overall I think that his design is really fantastic; it's a combination of the old flare and a more modern aesthetic. I did notice a nod to the 2000 film with the tail vanishing around the building shot being nearly an exact shot for shot of Godzilla disappearing from the choppers through the Chrysler building.

I'm really excited to see the human element in this film as well, Bryan Cranstons performance in the trailer offers a really kind of frantic danger sense to the equation and makes the movie feel like the old Godzilla movies did; a large and powerful Force of Nature moving through humankind and leaving us powerless to stop it.
