Seeing the Force: The Training of Cade Varr

[Matt]

Dewbecca smiled to his young padawan before looking up into the sun, the beaming sunshine off Ossus truly was a wonderful world but the sun didn't appeal to Dewbecca, it was not natural for him.

"Tell me a little about force powers, what are they....there purpose and anything else you feel you should say about them"

 

[Ols]

"A Force power," Cade started, "is a manipulation of the Force around us. We use our own sensitivity to it to use different powers. We can use different powers and strengths of powers depending on our connection to the Force, our emotions and control of our emotions."

 

[Matt]

"A perfect extract from a text book....Now as one spends more time studying the theory of these powers the more they understand the theory in using them, however there is a major difference between learning the theory and using them.

Dewbecca tensed his body and with a great swing off his arm he sent out a force push towards one of the boulders, it shot back several feet leaving a large dent inside it.

"Now, though much practice, learning of the theory and even more practice I have been able to learn a great deal of force powers that I can use, there are many jedi who know more then me and many non council masters that know more then me. I choose to learn a normal amount while making sure I was very strong in them all which I feel I am, I went for quality over quantity.....Now you try on this one....A force push"

He pointed towards one of the boulders next to the one he just dented.

 

[Ols]

Cade was pleased they were starting in certain territory, he could do a basic Force Push at least. He raised his arm and concentrated. The boulder started to shudder and the more Cade fell into the Force the more it rocked. Then, all of a sudden it came off the ground and flew back. It came down, going nowhere near as far as Dewbecca's, but far enough to make a loud crunching noise as it hit the ground.

 

[Matt]

"Now bring it back towards you!"

Dewbecca shouted over the loud crashing sound the boulder made

 

[Ols]

Cade let the Force continue through him and took another deep breath. Then he thought about what he was doing. He willed the boulder to come to him. He could do it, he had just thrown it away, he could lift it back. It started to move. He yanked it through the Force, and it flew a little harder than the first time. It hit the ground loudly again, perhaps a little closer to him than he would have liked.

 

[Matt]

"Doing it is one thing but you must keep constant control over what you are doing, there is no point sending out the biggest one you can manage if you have no idea what will happen...Perfect control always"

Dewbecca let the force flow though him and lifted the boulder high into the air, it did a slow turn in the air with complete control before he let it fall down slowly.

"Control is important above all else"

 

[Ols]

Cade presumed he wanted him to do the same. Control, just stay in control. He drifted into the Force and reached out and felt the rock. He raised his arm and, at a steady speed, the rock rose with it. He smiled a little as he raised it, high. He then tried to turn it. He focused all his mind on staying on control. And he did. Then he slowly brought it to land on the ground. It seemed a simple concept, but such a hard practice to Cade at that time.

 

[Matt]

"Control is what is important, there is no point knowing every force power in the book if you have no idea what will happen when you use them. How can a jedi be a guardian peace and justice if he has no control over himself....Exactly he can't"

Dewbecca turned to all the rocks and with a wave of his hands they all shot back several feet out of the way, he turned to his padawan.

"Now one of the best abilities a padawan can process is the ability to change his speed, to run fast, to escape danger or to run into it....It is one off our most basic and highly effective techniques. Now tell me, are you adept with it?

 

[Ols]

"I can run fast," he said, "but I have never needed or been asked to run so fast I needed the Force to aid me."

 

[Matt]

"You have never used the power called force speed?"

Dewbecca was slightly surprised by this as he saw it as one of the core force abilities but no matter, his padawan had greatly impressed him in other areas but he supposed it was about time that he was a complete novice in something.

 

[Ols]

"Never," said Cade, a little taken aback by the importance his master placed on it. Then again, he had only learnt the core of what the Force was and it's techniques as a youngling.

 

[Matt]

"This is in my opinion one of the most important powers there is, it can be used in either attack or defence. It can be used when needed to stay stealthy as those who are particularly adept in it can be nothing more then a gust of wind, here I will show you"

Dewbecca tensed his muscles slightly and shot off across the grounds from one end to the other creating a breeze and a hairy blurr

 

[Ols]

That was impressive, Cade thought to himself. He felt his master far away now and supposed he wanted him to do the same. He did not know how to do it, but he did know three things about learning more in the Force. Trust in the Force, believe you can do it and stay in control. He concentrated on speed and where his master was. He felt the Force in him and he set off at a run. He felt the Force aid his speed a little, but he certainly was nowhere near the blur his master was.

 

[Matt]

"Good, but at first it will take you a while to get the nessicary level of force connection however this is not about doing it as fast as possible. Stop for a moment and feel the force....let it flow though your muscles, let them become invigorated with it's power charge them like never before, do that now with me"

Dewbecca sat on the floor and crossed his legs while closing his eyes.

 

[Ols]

"Yes master," he said.

Cade sat with him and slipped into the Force. He felt it flow through him as he centred himself and relaxed, taking slow, deep breaths.

 

[Matt]

"Now, concentrate on the idea of moving at great speed but keep your mind on the force flowing though your muscles.....concentrate, breath and think on that."

Dewbecca rose to his feet and again almost flew across the grounds to the other end in great speed, nothing more then a blur.

"Now.....You"

 

[Ols]

Cade felt the Force flow through him. He thought of great speed and of the blur his master was. He felt the Force flow into his muscles and they tensed. As if the world was in slow motion he sprang to his feet and jogged over to the other side, stopping dead before his master. He had moved quick as a flash and now he knew what the power was.

"I understand, master," he said, proud of himself.

 

[Matt]

Dewbecca smiled in appreciation but this was only the very beginning of this power.

"Now, doing it once is not difficult but doing it for the first 10 times or so is very difficult, you must remember the state your mind was in at this point. This is a difficult art to master but remember how your mind was, open it up like a book and remember.....Now...try and do it again"

 

[Ols]

Cade listened and he felt the flow of the Force again. It was like a flowing river, its currents and eddies advising him. He tensed and jogged, but again he whizzed across to the other side of the fields, still deep in the Force, pausing long enough for Dewbecca to see him before whizzing back. He arrived, a little breathless, but confident and pleased.
