As the conversation continued around him, Quin’s eyes were only on Lemon. Pleading. Begging her to rethink what she was doing. When she finally lowered her blade from her neck, it was like a breath of fresh air.

Even if she said she would go through him to get to the Sith.

Quin could think again. Now he needed a way out. As the Sith Bitch spoke above him, his eyes went down to the lightsaber at his hip. If he could get that before she noticed, somehow cut off her arm—

“Siiiiiiiiiiiiiith… Jeeeeediiiiiiiiii…”

The knight wouldn’t have to fight his way free before the Sith removed her blade and shoved him forward. Without so much as a glance at her, Quin got back up to his feet and quickly made his way over to Vayla, facing the sound of the voice. There was something far worse than Sith here. Though he couldn’t see it, he could sense it.

And he could certainly see that blade.

Stay back. Though no words came out of his mouth, Quin prepared himself by igniting his lightsaber again and holding it with both hands at his side. If this thing had any reason, it would think twice about facing two Jedi. Potentially even a Sith, and maybe Lemon if she had come back to her senses.

Whatever it was, it felt wrong. It felt different from the dark side— it felt neither cold nor hot but nothing. Empty. Something in between. If it attacked… this time he would not be holding back.

Rage…rage against the—

—THE DYING—

“L-...”

The letter was barely a whisper on her lips.

“Li-...”

The formation of a word, of emotion, no weapons.

“...Lin…”

Nemesis…

Says a voice from a void.

Yes, Master?

You hesitate. Return to me. Do not delay.

Master…but…no…w-wait!

Return to me. Do not make me repeat.

Breath caught in her chest, the Togruta bit her lip, looking between Quin and Cheriss, to the Pantoran, to Vayla. Eyes into eyes.

Why..? Was…it…you…this whole time?

Sith. Jedi. That’s what the other weapon said. Not Nemesis. Tyrant. Yet he wasn’t her nemesis. He was Vayla’s. Quin’s. Cheriss’. He was their problem.

“Lin…”

The Weapon once named Leh’Min whispered between frozen lips. Tyrant walked onward, slow and steady, like a quiet if violent violin.

“LIN!”

That voice should get his attention as a girl’s eyes behind purple lights gazed into Quin’s face.

“I have to go.”

Again. Again! AGAIN.

AGAIN.
AGAIN.
AGAIN.

“Don’t follow me.”

She commanded. Beckoned.

“Or I’ll kill you.”

She flew.

Upward, Ataru put to other use, as she landed atop her chamber. She waited a moment, violet lights at her sides, making sure nobody tried anything funny, noticing they were about to be busy with Tyrant who was apparently Nemesis' replacement.

Hesitate. Hesitate. Lemonade.

At that, she thrust both swords into the ceiling of her chamber and whirled them in a short whirlwind with the Force. Maybe there had been a button. There usually was. But maybe this was symbolic. Of someone leaving an opening as one leaves cookie crumbs.

The purple blades created a circle so round, a door to the ground, a gateway into the upside down.

The floor opened into an elevator that began to move down as it had with her master. If anyone tried to enter this chamber too soon, however, they would have the misfortune of getting stung by Nemesis' lightsabers.

The floor would close back over the elevator as before, become a ceiling over the head of the Weapon, as Leh'Min'Ayd, if that was her name, yet again vanished from Quin.

The moment Cheriss heard someone else in the room, some other voice speak, she pulled her blade away from the Jedi’s neck and pushed him forward, letting Vayla’s pet run right back to her side. Scurry away, little boy.

Leh’Min’Ayd ran, too. Back to her master. Threatened to kill Quin if he followed. It sounded like quite a lovely relationship that Cheriss didn’t give a kriff about. Both were slaves to their masters, and it was possible for one to grow to love their chains.

Not her, though. She had other things to do, other monsters to face. Cyrus Orion would have to wait.

Whatever was in front of her and the two Jedi now was an abomination in every sense of the word. Not like whatever they called Sith— those were merely insults stemming from ideological disagreements. No, this was different, something else, neither light nor dark but an abomination. Something in between.

Cheriss pointed her blade diagonally down at the ground beside her. There was no flourish this time— this new opponent did not deserve the salute.

“It would be wise for you to turn around and leave this place,” she said. From the way its sword shone like the void and the steadiness in which it walked, however, she knew it wouldn’t listen. She readied herself for its next move.

Her gaze on this abomination, the corner of Vayla’s eye caught the movement of others. First Quin. He shifted as the Sith released him from her grip. Cheriss got into position, faced her opponent, but it was not Vayla, it was not Quin. It was not Leh’Min’Ayd even as her and Vayla look each other's way.

Eyes into eyes.

Why..? Was…it…you…this whole time?

It was not Nemesis. Whatever this thing was, it was not Human if ever it once was human. It was not Jedi, it was not Sith. The Shadow did not know what she sensed; no light, but more emptiness than darkness.

The light side. The dark side. Something…in between.

Living. Dying. Birthing. Alive. Dead. Undying.

"LIN! I have to go. Don’t follow me. Or I’ll kill you.”

Her heart is true.

The Shadow couldn’t look away from the void even as the voice of Leh’Min’Ayd's Nemesis came and the corner of Vayla’s eye caught the Togruta leap high. She landed atop her chamber, her cage, her prison, only to open it and go in.

A bird returns to her master…

“It would be wise for you to turn around and leave this place,”
So spoke a Sith to this...nothingness.

Sith. Jedi. In the end, at this moment, these two women were simply warriors. Right side. Wrong side. Light side. Dark side. They were soldiers. Soldiers who shared the same target, the same something, the same nothing.

Brandishing the hilt of her weapon, the Knight began to step aside from the Champion, mirroring what she had done earlier with Quin when Cheriss was their opponent.

Though, they had a new foe now. What is this…new devilry? So they shared common ground. And the Sith spoke words that the Jedi could only echo in return.

“Take my advice.”

Vayla advised, gazing into the black-clad monstrosity of dead flesh with her cybernetic eyes, into darkness with a brilliant fire by her side, a blue blade and flame, the sword of the Jedi.

“This is one Sith you don’t want to mess with.”

The Jedi ought to know having just fought the Sith.
Vayla. Cheriss. Just two women. Just too warriors.
Quin, however, was not needed as a third soldier.
Vayla had a different mission for him.

Go after her, Quin! Find your Leh’Min’Ayd! Find our master! I’ll keep this thing busy...

As the abomination came for the two women, moving like a mountain, Vayla flexed her fingers on her grip, giving her opponent her attention with her lightsaber and the fire that burned inside her, came as blue blades in her eyes.

RUN, QUIN, RUN!

"GO TO HER!”

Whatever his answer, it might not matter as the monster suddenly sprung forward toward Vayla and Cheriss, halving the distance, swinging his sword.

First at the Jedi who blocked his black blade with her blue blade, then at the Sith the same instant as another blade extended from the other end of his weapon.

“Lin…” He heard her voice. Hers, not Nemesis'.

Quin promptly turned to Lemon. Did she just call me…

“LIN!”

His eyes widened. She was back. His Lemon.

“I have to go.” He stopped, blinked a few times. Again? But you just came back…

“Don’t follow me. Or I’ll kill you.” Quin heard the hum of the stranger’s blade as he walked closer, but he could only see Lemon’s as she cut a hole into that chamber of hers, jumped in, and disappeared to somewhere underneath. The Jedi could only stare before Vayla’s voice in his mind snapped him back into attention.

Go after her, Quin! Find your Leh’Min’Ayd! Find our master!

He didn’t have to be told twice before he bolted after her.

RUN, QUIN, RUN!

Quin leaped on top of the chamber, then into the hole that Lemon had left for him. There had to be something in here that led down. His eyes went to the bed, but there was nothing there. Nothing underneath it either.

Then he saw it— a little button on the floor. Once he pressed it, the floor opened, giving him access to the same elevator that Lemon had gone through. Before he went in, though, he would glance one last time at the clashing blades of his master, the Sith, and the abomination. He didn’t like to leave her alone with two enemies, but he had to do this.

Good luck, Master Mirror.

With that, he jumped in.

The floor having closed over Quin’s head the moment he descended, he would find no platform for it was at the surface of the floor beneath the upper chamber, but the Force would be his guide as the man fell down the elevator shaft.

Though there might be an inside joke somewhere above this madness, where he landed was no joke whatsoever. He would find no Master Mirror. No reflection of light. Only darkness. Only pale light. Dim and distant.

There where those shadows danced in between. Shadows. Circles so round. There in a world that was below what was beneath, deeper than deep.

Having landed, he glimpsed no lightswitch that would prove to be effective in turning the lights on, forcing him to rely on the Force and his senses to navigate this environment, negotiate with its darkness.

At first glance, he could make out a kind of reflection to the above environment, the area he had just left with Cheriss and Vayla. The further he explored forward, the more he would notice, identical equipment, positions, until he realized in the dim light.

It was the same room as the room above, the same chamber, with the same inner chamber, that dome where Quin had pressed his hand on its glass and into Leh’Min's. Only the circle curved downward, not upward, like a crater in the floor, so round. If this was a mirror, then it was upside down.

There was a bed in the middle of the pit.

There was a girl on the bed. Motionless.

A purple girl. Togruta. Weapon. Nemesis?

“This is one Sith you don’t want to mess with.”

Whether it was a Jedi’s trick to goad this monstrosity to attack Cheriss instead of herself or just an attempt at signaling that they were now facing a common enemy, the Sith briefly glanced over at Vayla.

“Neither with this Jedi,” she added for good measure. That was when she spotted the boy running away into some hole yet again, leaving the two women to fight the abomination. Vayla seemed to support it, too, and for a brief moment Cheriss wondered just what they were planning.

Unfortunately, she wouldn’t have much time to think about that. Almost as soon as the thought entered her mind, the monster sprung at them both. When the other half of his weapon ignited, Cheriss quickly flipped her blade into a reverse grip to block. She pushed back against his blade, finding that his arm hardly budged.

The monster would force them both back as he suddenly pressed forward, spinning his blade with his right arm. Cheriss moved to his left, attempting to flank him on the side with a quick ball of fire. He got rid of that quickly enough by simply shifting his saber momentarily to the left, giving his right side exposed in that instant.

Cheriss wouldn’t have a chance to see if Vayla had managed to get him, though. She suddenly felt a force hit her chest, sending her sliding backwards. As she dug her feet into the ground and stabilized herself with her arms, she realized that it had been the Force. When she looked up, the monster had thrown his lightsaber like a spinning boomerang at the Jedi.

This foe was strong. He wielded his double-bladed lightsaber in one hand as if there were two lightsabers in both hands.

With a two-handed grip, Vayla could only imagine the punishment of his power, but she didn’t have an instant to even consider it as the Weapon contended with two soldiers.

The next moment, in a maneuver reminiscent of an Inquisitor’s weapon, their opponent spun his saber. Black light whirled, the blade screaming as it twirled, shielding against retaliation.

Cheriss moved to its left flank. Vayla moved to its right. As the Sith spat fire, the Jedi lashed like the tongue of a dragon.

Her sword, two-handed, sword downward, tore for the creature’s right side to sever his arm in half if not cleave through his back.

Just then, Vayla felt herself skidding backwards, digging her feet into the ground to stabilize, realizing that the Force had just struck her, cast by her opponent who had slammed his boot on the ground with a boom.

As his lightsaber ripped right for her, inches away from her face, the Jedi had only enough time to swing her blade. It knocked its blade away, came back for its hand, as the abomination spoke yet again.

“Jeeeeediiiii…"

It focused on Cheriss, curled its fingers from a distance, walked toward her, pulled her toward it.

"Siiiiiiith…”

Quin fell.

He fell through light and shadow, bright and dark. It was all pale, everything flickering and combining into shades of gray as if he were in one of those old horror holofilms. He could see but he could not see, yet he knew the moment he was about to land.

Even at the bottom there was no light. As he got up and walked slowly forward, he wondered if light had ever reached this place. Yet it was not wholly dark, either. He could see shapes as he moved forward, equipment, walls?

There was something off about this place.

He walked forward until he saw that dome. It was the same dome as the one above, but upside down. As he approached, he could see that it was the same sight that he’d walked into the first time. It did not fill him with emotion to see her again, however. This time he felt wary.

The real Lemon wouldn’t be sleeping after a fight like that. Would she?

“Lemon?” Quin approached cautiously, peering into the upside down dome. “Can… can you hear me?” He spoke quietly, but if she was awake she would be able to hear him.

It didn’t look like Vayla was having any more success than Cheriss was, and it was almost effortless in the way that the abomination didn’t even look and was able to catch his blade. It was strong in every sense of the word.

The Sith couldn’t help thinking back to those dented metal bars and the broken unbreakable glass as the monster drawled again.

Then she felt something pulling her forward, and her body involuntarily moved closer to the Weapon despite her attempts at planting her boots into the ground and using friction to stop it. Having no other choice, Cheriss could only swing her sword at her opponent’s lower arm to break the pull, only for her and her lightsaber to be sent flying back when the abomination put both hands on his blade and shoved her away.

She hit the wall with enough force that it made her wince when she tried to get back up. Getting back up to her feet and breathing a little heavier now, Cheriss summoned her lightsaber. However, the monster had now focused its full attention on the Jedi, using both hands in a downward diagonal slash at the center of Vayla’s chest.

Swinging a weapon like a boomerang or a four-pointed shuriken wasn’t what had unnerved her with his double-bladed lightsaber.

Vayla had performed the maneuver before. It wasn’t his sword but his grip on the Force that truly unsettled her. This wasn’t living, and this wasn’t Living. It was something in between.

The abomination headed toward Cheriss, hoping to pull her toward him in the process, but that kept his focus off his other opponent. Vayla sprung forward to close the distance just as he swung his black sword two-handed.

Vayla did the same, reaching him with an upward diagonal slash, just as he followed his swing through with the momentum from Cheriss’ into Vayla’s blade. Blue and black clashed, the creature’s strength overpowering the Jedi’s the next moment.

As her lightsaber was pushed down, the Shadow released a hand from the hilt and drew the Force into her palm to knock the abomination backward and return the favor.

Only he wouldn’t be falling into a wall but potentially into the crimson blade of a Sith who relished challenge as much as revenge.

Curiosity killed the cat, they said, but a Pyke was not a cat. He was, at this moment, a snake in the grass as he sat. A Togruta had opened her shell, gone down a well, and a Human had gone in after her.

Her shell was a glass dome within a larger chamber, she opened it, entered an elevator, and it didn’t take an idiot or a romantic to detect that she wanted this kid to follow her even though she said she didn’t.

That left the Jedi and the Sith to contend with the other Weapon, the creature with the black-bladed lightsaber, as all three were distracted with one another.

That gave the Pyke some time with a lemon falling in a hole and a Jedi Knight following behind.

In the machine, he found a diagram of the elevator shaft. A platform descended beneath the dome’s floor before the floor closed back over as the shaft’s ceiling, then the elevator reached the surface beneath. However, the map and bad physics ended there.

Whatever was within this chamber and beyond, he could not find a map within the computer.

But he did find that, as Quin or Lin entered the elevator shaft after Nemesis, the platform returned to the surface, and locked the button. If he wanted to use that elevator he would have to unlock it first.

So he searched and he discovered other matters.

There was no response.

Quin had expected as much, but it still brought a frown to his face. It didn’t make sense for Lemon to be here— so who was this? What was this? It was a mirror image of the floor above. Like it was upside down. None of it made sense.

He looked at Lemon one more time before he decided to look around the room. At first glance it appeared to be the same as the one he’d come from, but maybe there was something else here. A clue. Wherever he was, it was equally as dark, so Quin walked along the wall to have a sense of direction. He kept his steps quiet just in case someone else was with him.

Lemon? He called out to her telepathically. He didn’t know if it would work, but it had served him well earlier today. She’d given him some direction earlier, and maybe she could now.

Lemon?

Light.

The word would echo in his mind, distorted, not like a helmet’s modulator, but as if the speaker’s voice was fading away in a cave.

Turn on the lights.

But they wouldn’t be so easy to find in the darkness, would not be so easy to use the Force and sense with, because Quin Leonkri had to first turn on the lights in his mind.

Only then would he see that there was no light, there were no lights, because maybe there was no chamber, maybe this was a dream, behind closed eyelids, where darkness exists when you sleep.

He had to open his brain up to believe in the...in between…stranger things.

And realize that the lightswitch was wherever he decided he might find it.

Cheriss watched as the Jedi took on the monster, searching for a possible opening that she could take advantage of. The way their opponent moved was powerful yet fluid, and it was clear that he had been well-trained. Maybe it was good that she hadn’t been able to go after Orion by herself— if this abomination was a creation of his and he had any semblance of a brain, he would only give it a fraction of his own strength.

Just then, Vayla managed to push the abomination back toward Cheriss. Ready with her blade, the Sith pushed her sword arm forward as if to catch him. However, her opponent seemed to sense her blade somehow, and at the very last moment he twisted around to bring her blade down with his own.

The other end of his weapon swung up as a result, and Cheriss ducked to avoid the hit. She swung her lightsaber horizontally to her right at the same time, aiming for his knees. That forced him a few steps back.

Yet, even though his attacks had been foiled twice, Cheriss sensed no anger in their opponent. His aura felt as empty as ever, neither light nor dark. Then he spun his blade once more with one hand, using his other to yank Vayla toward him and potentially into his sword.

Sith. Jedi. It was just a moment of noticing it as the Abomination, the Weapon, stepped back from the Sith’s attack.

Her blade was red. His was black. It wasn’t white. It wasn’t grey. If he was in between, his blade was…empty. A pit.

It reminded the Jedi of the sword a forlorn Sith might wield if their life, their emotion, passion, had been stripped away from them, like flayed skin.

What was left behind was something naked, upside down, vacant, an echo in hell, dead and alive, a ghost in the shell, a void.

Their soul had been…taken.

Their own ghost…forsaken.

A lonely, lonely voice
.

This wasn’t the work of Jedi. This was the work of Sith. This was maybe the work of a Jedi still falling, or a Sith who had already fallen so far he could no longer see the surface of the ocean, of his pit.

A Jedi Knight knew this. A shadow was different. Shadows were sent by the light. Distracted, the creature pulled the Shadow Knight in toward it while spinning its lightsaber.

That left his flank open for Cheriss and the Jedi would let the Sith decide what to do with that.

In the meantime, the Shadow noticed her opponent grip his propeller weapon one-handed in the center, leaving its metallic extensions exposed.

So Vayla’s sword came crashing down on metal to sever one portion of lightsaber hilt from the other and negate an entire blade.

Trivial, perhaps, but the impact could result in a jolt from having one of the Abomination’s sabers short out and interrupt his whirlwind, allowing Knight Vayla to arc her blade into its waist along with whatever Cheriss the Champion might do.

Rage…

It was her master.

Distracting her.

Finish it.

The sentence?

Or her opponent?

Or maybe she was already too distracted by her vision and her attack missed her target.

Light. Turn on the lights.

What?
The answer he got didn’t sound like Lemon’s voice, and it wasn’t as clear as it had been before. Doubt crept into his mind, echoing in his thoughts just as the voice did. But what other choice did he have? This was about as much guidance as he dared to ask for, and he might as well get a move on and try to find the light switch.

Continuing on his path around the room, Quin would keep going forward with his hand tracing the wall. He hit no corners, and after a while he felt like he was going in circles. Maybe he was— this room felt like a dome. Yet however few or many circles he had gone through, there was no indication that there was a switch at all.

He stopped walking, trying to think. This was usually when he would ask Master Mirror for advice, but she was up there fighting some monster with another monster at her side. He would have to do this on his own. What was that phrase the Jedi always fell back on when they couldn’t find an answer? Trust the Force. Quin closed his eyes and tried.

He opened up his mind, allowing his senses and the Force to explore the depths of darkness in search of the light. He didn’t know exactly what he was searching for, but his mind was neither light nor dark, rather a shade of gray like the color he’d seen falling down that elevator. The in between. That was what this place was, and that was how he had to think.

It was only then that he saw light.

Perhaps the question that Quin should be asking wasn’t where he was, how, even when, but...who?

Who are you?

What was a machine without a soul? It was a question one student had been asked over and over again until she had given her master a satisfying answer.

What was a Jedi without a weapon?

As lights came on below, little would Quin know that lights also came on above, where a Pyke would no longer be so hidden, and the fight between a Jedi, a Sith and a Weapon would be in the shadows between light and darkness, but a hatch leading below would also be exposed.

It was only then that he saw light.

Open your eyes.

A child might. What about an adult? Did they listen when commanded? Did a man? A soldier? A weapon?

Trust the Force.

Only one section on the wall was covered in a perfect rectangle so rectangular. A block of darkness.

Open the door of the in between.

The lights went off again, covering everyone and everything in utter darkness, above and below.

Find the right side up.

For Quin, only one section on the wall was covered in a perfect rectangle so rectangular. A block of light.

Or be doomed to repeat your failures over and over again in this upside down chamber.

The lights went on again in seconds.

Off again.

On again.

Forever.

This abomination, though it was a monster, was an artist in its own way. The seamless twirls of his blade, black as night, and the deadly waltz he participated in with both Jedi and Sith was quite enthralling. It was only that his opponents were dancers too— and they appeared to have a few artistic differences.

He may have seen himself as alive, but they saw him dead.

As the abomination turned his blade onto Vayla instead, Cheriss took the opportunity to give him a taste of her own. She moved toward him and slashed her blade downwards diagonally, which would have cut into his side. Concurrent with the Jedi’s attack, if all went as planned the monster’s torso would be split from his lower body.

His lightsaber split instead.

The monster was quick, and instead of the broken half flying off into the sky, the abomination caught it with his other hand and brought it around to his back, blocking Cheriss’ swing just as it was about to hit. Vayla’s attack missed and they were once again stuck. Now their opponent had not one, but two blades.

Cheriss drew back, not missing a beat as she arced her saber low for his knees instead. The monster swung one of his at the same time, aiming to cut the Sith in two as his other blade went diagonally for Vayla’s torso. Whatever she might do, being on the opposite side, hopefully they could pin him in and finish him off this time.
