A girl thinks.
Am I even...a girl?
Within this world.
A weapon she brings.

No. That’s wrong.
A girl doesn’t bring the weapon.
A girl is the weapon.
And weapons have no emotions.

A boy steps in front of a girl. He has a name. Quin Leonkri. She has a name. Leh’Min’Ayd.

Not anymore…

They both have swords. She has two before his one. They crackle. They don’t cackle, it isn’t madness in her grip, not like a certain Sith with his sadism, whose name is Kayden. No, her violet lights are a kind of quiet, a kind of calm, not chaos, she’s no tyrant.

But she’s violent. He can see it in her eyes. Her hands aren’t empty. No fingers free. She isn’t free. She has opponents. She must show it. Hers is a performance test. For her master. She cannot be bested. Her purple lightsabers are like the patience of a longstanding rival, though one who won’t be overcome. An archenemy who nobody and nothing can defeat.

Nemesis…

He stepped in front of her as if to shield her from the Sith but he doesn’t know what his Lemon is.

Dead. Body.

The Pantoran woman cautioned the Sith against conflict but she doesn’t know what a Sith is.

Weapon…

Conflict. Violence. Combat. The young man, the Jedi with a green light, charged at the Sith. A weapon’s eyes go wide at this. It happened so fast. In the span of that instant, she glimpsed the Jedi with a blue light react, didn’t hesitate as she went for the Sith and swung her blade.

Something slammed. An object. A back. It was the young man. He landed right beside the weapon. Her saber crackled to that Sith’s cackle. The man rose, faced the weapon, and spoke.

Lemon…

His hand extended to the weapon.

Leh’Min’...

He mentioned Sith.

Sith…

He was a Jedi.

Jedi…

He said her name.

Leh’Min’Ayd…

Face to face.
Eyes into eyes.
Looks like he might cry.
Looks like she isn’t alive.

Rage…

“Leh’Min’Ayd is gone.”

Her eyes are off.

Against the dying light…

“I am what remains.”

Of the Sith. Of the Jedi.

“Your…Nemesis…”

-VWMMMM!-

And a weapon swings wide.

Nemesis extended, not her hand so as to accept his, but to take the Jedi’s hand from his wrist with her left weapon, swinging her lightsaber diagonally downward from her left to right.

Cheriss’ blade was up the instant the boy’s boot left the floor. His master spoke, but he would not listen. So young, so naive. His companion though, his Master Mirror, seemed to be more experienced and sure-footed. So, as Knight Leonkri attempted to crush her under the force of his lightsaber, ignoring the fact that Cheriss’ other hand was free to retaliate, the Sith sent a Force push into the Jedi’s torso. He was out of the way in a heartbeat.

That left Cheriss to deal with the other one. His master. A Shadow. Vayla was her name.

The Pantoran swung her blade, and the human caught it with hers. Cheriss laughed.

“You’re fools, all of you.” She twisted around to avoid being stuck in a saber lock, then backed away to face Vayla again with her lightsaber held in front of her. A defensive position. Cheriss was not interested in a duel, but these Jedi were making it impossible. Who would have thought the Sith was the one who didn’t want to fight? She only wanted her information, to kill that man who had disappeared, and then she could be on her way.

He is the threat, not me.” She knew the Jedi wouldn’t listen, though. Especially with the Lemon girl attacking Quin Leonkri, she saw out of the corner of her eye. Cheriss refocused her attention on his master, who still had her lightsaber up. She hated when things got in her way, and if this Jedi wanted to die here today, the Sith would gladly oblige her. Her lightsaber hummed, ready to make its next move should she need to.

Maybe it was the fire inside her. That contained fire. From the light. In the shadows. Maybe she was just angered because of her former master. Because of everything, and was letting her emotions get the better of her. Whatever it was, Vayla saw only red, and it wasn’t just this Sith’s lightsaber.

Cheriss Ktrame, if that was her name, had actually tried to convert Leh’Min’Ayd, a troubled teenager, in the middle of this chamber. “Join me”, she said, as if some Killik Joiner, and how fitting, truly, given that the Sith were a disease. Cyrus Orion was right about that much, at least.

Then Quin charged, Cheriss pushed him back with her hand, and laughed. Maybe that was it. Maybe that was the moment that the Shadow exploded. She said nothing, charging her opponent, and swung her blade the next second.

-kzssh!-

Lightsabers crackled. The Sith cackled. Yet again. Typical. At least this woman played her part well.

A moment of respite already, however, as the Sith backed away into a defensive position, blade at the ready. Vayla mirrored her opponent. She was not so easily swayed or goaded. If this Sith didn’t want to fight then that was even better and the Jedi was not the type to attack unprovoked as long as her foe didn’t.

“You are both threats. Cyrus. The Sith. No argument there. But you’re right. My fight isn’t—”

She caught movement from the corner of her eye just then. Leh’Min’Ayd was…attacking…Quin!?

Instinct, yet again, drove Vayla’s actions. Blade up to defend against Cheriss, her free hand moved to immediately separate Leh’Min’Ayd from Quin yet, in that instant, the Togruta appeared to sense it.

Her blade didn’t connect with Quin’s wrist but, as her saber gave way, Leh’Min’Ayd removed a few fingers from the hilt and jerked Vayla forward—toward Cheriss! The Pantoran hadn’t attacked but maybe it would seem like that.

It was a concurrent action. The Togruta’s other hand pushed instead of pulled, pushing Cheriss—into Vayla! It was as if she was telling the Jedi and the Sith to shut up and get it done.

Whether her opponent swung first, Vayla would do everything she could to evade swinging her own blade unless necessary. She aimed to step past the Sith, her blue blade in a defensive position, eyes into eyes.

During this, another instant, another trigger, as she remembered the words of her master. He mentioned their Force signatures, how these Force-users had evidently not sensed each other’s presence this whole time, as if...something was working against their efforts.

Coincidence? Emotion. Emotions carried memories, and at that moment, as the Jedi was all but sent flying toward the Sith, as the corner of her eye caught Leh’Min’Ayd turning toward Quin again, Vayla sensed through her feeling, through her memory, words of crystals, words of...

Rage…

As if there was another presence in this chamber this whole time, something they had all missed, the beginning of madness, of anger, and it began to draw their blades to each other like magnets.

The look in Lemon’s eyes unnerved him. They were empty. Off. So were her words, not at all what she’d sounded like just moments before.

Cyrus Orion. This was his fault. It was all his fault. He’d taken Lemon from him, and worse, he’d taken Lemon from herself. The Togruta that stood in front of him now was not the girl he’d known on Botajef, on Nar Shaddaa, on Sonos, on Thila. No, this was someone else.

Nemesis.

“No.” Quin backed away, horrified, but Lemon swung at him. His hand drew back immediately and his blade went up to intercept hers. “Don’t do this, Lemon!” She was, though.

Even if her blade pulled back for a moment, Quin knew that it wasn’t because of her. Behind her, he saw Vayla and the Sith being pulled toward each other, Lemon’s hands flexing. She wanted this, he realized. No. He wants it.

But, as much as it hurt him to do it, Quin knew he had to protect himself and Vayla. This wasn’t Lemon he was fighting, but a shell hollowed out by her master. He swung his blade sideways, aiming at the hilts of her sabers in the hope of disarming her. He couldn’t bear to hurt her.

“I’m sorry.” His voice choked a little, but he reminded himself of the stakes. I will do what I must.

Left weapon tried to take Quin’s hand from his wrist. He lifted his weapon and intercepted the Weapon’s. Leh’Min’Ayd was her name. Her blade was the same but she wasn’t the same. She had another blade anyway.

As Quin Leonkri’s emerald light bit into purple light, Nemesis swung her right lightsaber for Quin’s defenseless left side. If it hit then the blade would sever his stomach from his hips.

Just then, WEAPON was sent staggering backwards. Had she not have managed to keep her footing then she would have been falling. Her second attack had missed like her first. No matter. This wasn’t the end yet. No. This was only the beginning of the end.

Of Master’s test. From vengeance. To give her practice. To give them punishment.

Nemesis looked left, spotted her attacker, the Jedi Vayla Mirana. She had only a moment earlier been fighting the Sith Cheriss Ktrame. What happened? No matter. They needed to be distracted from Nemesis with their focus on each other, and this would better serve Master’s purpose anyway.

With a bit of distance given between her and her opponent, the Weapon concurrently shoved Vayla and Cheriss toward one another. Their lightsabers would serve in place of a handshake. Whatever happened, Nemesis gave her opponent her undivided attention the next moment.

“I’m sorry,” Quin said, but his apology was alien, his voice was distant; just noise like the words ‘Lemon’ and ‘Leh’Min’ as a voice in her head.

He speaks but she isn’t listening.
He swings his weapon.
He sees that his memory is only a weapon.

As Quin made the mistake of attacking Nemesis’ hilts the way one aims for blades, she reacted immediately by removing her hilts and hands and blades backwards and away from the other saber’s path. The emerald blade swung sideways, continued in its swing to Nemesis’ right.

As that happened, Nemesis swung her left blade diagonally downward from her left to right. It wouldn’t connect with Quin’s weapon but instead with his right elbow to cleave through its bone. Only, it wouldn’t be as easy to remove it from the violet light’s path as it was to pull a hilt or a blade back.

Maybe this Jedi had some sense after all. Though neither lowered their lightsabers, Cheriss did sense that Vayla Mirana wasn’t keen on fighting either. The Jedi, however, cut herself off when she saw the Togruta attacking the boy. Cheriss didn’t understand why she cared so much. Let them deal with each other, and they could move on to Orion beneath. He was the greater threat.

Unfortunately, it seemed that this Jedi had other ideas. The moment Cheriss was the tiniest bit distracted by what was going on between the two children, she saw the Pantoran moving toward her. She felt herself being pushed forward involuntarily, as if the Jedi was attempting to pull her into her blade. It was already too late to consider that Lemon might have been the one who caused this, though, not Vayla Mirana. As their blades clashed and they once again ended up facing each other on opposite sides, Cheriss’ gaze hardened as the met the electric blue eyes of her opponent. Her right hand held her lightsaber at her side, ready to block any incoming attack.

Fools. Cheriss had offered to put their differences aside for the moment, but clearly it wasn’t an option to these so-called guardians of peace and justice. She didn’t appreciate being tricked either.

“If this is how Jedi negotiate, I will have none of it.” With that, she summoned a bolt of lightning with her left hand and directed it at the Jedi, aiming to strike her in the chest.

Their blades clashed yet again. Cyan light bites crimson. Weapons in defensive positions, though perhaps Vayla’s blade had actually kept Cheriss’ from biting into her anyway. Maybe this Sith had attacked all the same. She had one chance already. What had Vayla said earlier? Oh. Right. I won’t say it twice.

If there was power at work here drawing opponents together like magnets, those sabers that crashed into one another were like opposites as much as attracted to each other. Blue and red. Two duelists. A Jedi. A Sith.

Vayla assumed a defensive stance, Soresu, after a fashion, though it might have been worth a mention that this Knight was not so rigid in her styles and stances. Her right hand held her lightsaber at her side, ready to block any incoming attack.

Fool. Vayla had offered this Sith a chance to stand aside, to get out of her way and Quin’s and Leh’Min’Ayd’s, but clearly it wasn’t an option to this, well, Sith. Hardly surprising given who and what she is.

Though, from the corner of her eye yet again, the Shadow witnessed the Togruta assume an offensive position. Unfortunately for the Human Sith, the Pantoran Jedi wasn’t as distracted this time.

As lightning flew toward Vayla, she gripped her hilt with both hands the instant she lifted her weapon. The blue blade screamed against the current of electricity, illuminating the blue face behind it, one with vengeance in its visage; a righteous fury; fire suppressed by light.

“Looks like the negotiations were short.”

Vayla’s sword absorbed the lightning and, unless Cheriss had cut it short, the Knight attempted to push that energy back toward the caster—into her attacker.

Unsurprisingly, Quin’s half-hearted attempt at disarming Lemon had failed, leaving his lightsaber swinging into empty air at his left. He had to pull himself together if he wanted out of this, he knew. He would have to save Lemon later. From whatever this twisted project was.

As she pulled back and he saw that her left blade was curving toward his right elbow instead, the knight would take his left hand off his hilt and twist to his right, his saber connecting with hers. In that moment he opened the palm of his left hand toward Lemon’s right hand, attempting to rip Lemon’s other lightsaber from her grip using the Force.

Her stance was purely offensive, his equally as defensive. If Quin could get himself out of this without hurting Lemon he would. In the background he could hear Vayla clashing with Ktrame. That didn’t matter now, though— whatever it was he was alone with Lemon, with Nemesis, just not in the way that he’d expected.

Nemesis’ left saber missed Quin’s elbow, intercepted with his own weapon, at which point Nemesis twisted her left wrist in an attempt to bend her opponent’s blade backward and downward with her own upon their connection.

At that moment, Quin opened his left hand and attempted to rip Nemesis’ right lightsaber from her grip with the Force. She instantly felt that power curl around her hand and drew her own into it—defense against offense—tightening her fingers over the hilt of her lightsaber to keep everything together.

However, with limited success on his end this instead meant that Quin was tugging, not Nemesis’ weapon from her grip, but her weapon, hand an arm toward him. So she used this to her own advantage, banking on the momentum.

As Nemesis’ right saber, still gripped in her hand, soared forward, she reoriented it in an attack, swinging her sword diagonally downward from her right to left. During this, her left saber would be bending Quin’s saber in a pinned position. Her right saber would sever his right arm at the elbow or, rather, the elbow pit—chelidon, to be specific.

Granted, if Quin didn't release his grip, but kept drawing his opponent's hand forth, her quick-moving sword would potentially connect with his chest instead.

The Jedi moved to deflect the bolt of lightning back at her, and Cheriss rolled to her left as the electricity struck the floor. The negotiations had been short indeed. The Sith only had one goal now— and that was to get this Jedi out of her way as soon as possible so she could go after that man.

Narrowing her eyes as she faced her opponent, Cheriss regrouped and readjusted her grip on the saber, pointing her thumb along the length of her weapon and flexing her remaining four fingers around the hilt. She placed her left hand behind her back in traditional Makashi fashion before stepping forward, cutting in a downward arc from her right to left aiming at Vayla’s left shoulder.

Keeping her knees slightly bent and her feet light, Cheriss was ready to move back at a moment’s notice should her opponent attempt to pivot or redirect her blade.

The lightning vanished into thin air as surely as it had first been projected. That left Cheriss’ hand free as much as Vayla’s saber. The Jedi had only one goal now: get this Sith out of her way as soon as possible so she could go after her master.

Widening her eyes while she faced her opponent, Vayla offered Cheriss her left side. Hilt in right hand, blade horizontal from the floor pointing forward and right beside her face, left arm extended, two fingers pointing the same way.

As the red blade came, Vayla reacted by retracting her left leg and placing it behind her right, aligning her right side with Cheriss instead of her left. This would bring her left shoulder out of the path of her opponent’s sword. Concurrently, Vayla swung her blue blade to her left to intercept Cheriss’ weapon for extra measure.

While bringing her left foot backward, creating further distance from her opponent, Vayla also dipped her two extended left fingers downward, and curled. Aiming for Cheriss’ legs, the Sith would be swept off her feet for an unceremonious descent backwards.

Proponents of Makashi, a form that Vayla herself was a fan of, said that it was especially effective against Soresu. It focused on efficient movements, elegant footwork and precise blade placement. Soresu, meanwhile, focused on defense, patience and waiting for the right time to strike.

Ultimately it all boiled down to how skilled and experienced either practitioner was. However, one thing was for certain: there would be nothing elegant about this Sith having her feet pulled out from beneath her by the Jedi to in turn land on her backside.

As Quin tried to disarm Lemon, he realized that he was just pulling her blade toward himself. As her right blade arced downwards toward his elbow, Quin could only draw back his right arm as much as he could mid-block and reverse his left hand’s Force pull into a push to slow down the attack.

At the same time, he felt Lemon’s left hand trying to bend his right in an attempt to pin him in. Quin dug his feet into the ground as he resisted. He turned his shoulders to the right, bringing his sword arm with it. He simultaneously drew back his left hand and stopped the Force push, allowing Lemon’s right blade to miss and curve down in front of him as he joined his left hand to his right on the lightsaber hilt.

Now that he had a better grip, he used the strength of both arms on his lightsaber in an attempt to shove Lemon back, away from him. You don’t have to do this. No telekinesis, but if there was any hint of the girl he knew still in Nemesis, she would be able to see the pain in his eyes.

Nemesis felt the resistance against her right weapon, the Force that wrapped around it suddenly transitioning from a pull to a push. It was an effective tactic that helped prevent Quin’s arm from being severed at the elbow; though it also allowed his opponent to instantly regain control over her right violet light with this interruption.

As Quin removed his sword from Nemesis’ left sword, and as her right sword curved downward to miss its target, she arced it. She simultaneously brought both her purple blades into Quin’s green blade the moment he used his weapon to shove the Weapon away but was prevented from it.

The lightsabers hissed and sizzled as all three connected, violet and emerald crackling like the lightning had off to the side. Nemesis, while obviously not watching, was not oblivious to the separate duel being waged between the Sith and the other Jedi.

At the moment, though, as a spontaneous blade lock emitted from their connection, Quin gazed into Nemesis’ face from inches away. She saw pain in his eyes. He would see nothing in hers. Only emptiness. For a weapon had no emotions. Only determination. To take everything away from him. Including his pain.

Starting with his face. Nemesis would break their connection by suddenly rushing forward toward Quin. Both her blades pointing up at the ceiling, mirroring one another, she attempted to use her opponent’s own weapon against him and shove his blade into his face.

Cheriss noted that Vayla seemed to be playing the defensive game when she went for the classic Soresu stance. It was as if she wanted to prolong this, to make sure that the man had a chance to run away before the Sith would be able to catch up with him. Why were Jedi never able to see what was beyond their own noses?

As Cheriss shifted her weight into her left foot for the attack, she felt a sudden pull from the Force at her legs. Instead of avoiding or fighting it, she used the extra forward momentum to pivot around in a circle, allowing her to turn so that Vayla was now on her left.

The Sith’s blade still against the Jedi’s, Cheriss would twist her wrist to the right, turning her lightsaber along with it in an attempt to disarm Vayla. Her left foot was still in front, her right a little further back. She couldn’t wait to get this over with.

Vayla caught onto Cheriss’ pivot, easily spotted as the Sith began moving to the Jedi’s right flank. Having been facing Cheriss’ front with her right side before the Sith repositioned, Vayla knew this would leave her own right side open for an attack—as much as her opponent open.

So, as Cheriss circled to Vayla’s right, Vayla pivoted on her left foot, bringing her right foot backward beside her left, aligning her front with her opponent once again. Concurrently, Vayla ripped her lightsaber out from beneath her opponent’s the moment Cheriss shifted.

The Jedi seamlessly swung her blue light horizontally from her left to right, opposite the direction her opponent’s wrist twisted in. It was with a storm of precision and efficiency, though the Sith would have to judge its elegance.

Having been on the defensive, Vayla suddenly exploded onto the offense. The tip of her sword would tear across Cheriss’ chest through flesh and bone.

Furthermore, her left hand free, Vayla called upon the Force to pull Cheriss into her strike and maximize her blade’s range—or take the Sith’s left arm off if it got in the way.

In the instant that both of them were pushing against each other, each trying to overpower the other, Quin saw nothing in Lemon’s eyes. Did she even know who he was? How could she have forgotten? It was like he was looking into the eyes of a stranger.

When she rushed forward into him, Quin had no choice but to back up and absorb her momentum, trying to keep Lemon at bay as her vertical sabers pressed into his diagonal one. She ended up putting his back against the wall, his own green blade getting dangerously close to his face. It was quite the contrast from earlier, when all he saw was red.

Now, all he could see was Lemon’s empty gaze bathed in a grayish light that combined from green and violet. Not black, not white, but something in between.

Gritting his teeth, Quin would aim a kick with his right foot at Lemon’s stomach, hoping to knock her over or at least unbalance her and get out of this saber lock.

Emptiness. Fulfillment. Balance. Something in between. If her master could conquer this galaxy, could encircle it, girdle every system and planet, there would be no stopping him.

He had a vision and his student had seen it. Had glimpsed its promise. Had witnessed it as surely as a Jedi envisioned prophecy.

Empty? Quin couldn’t see. The eyes of Nemesis glowed bright like the violet light of her lightsaber. A weapon was the tool of the future. It burned with purpose. Unfortunately for those who got in her master’s way, they had no future, and neither did Quin and Leh’Min’Ayd.

Rage, rage against the dying light.

Yet a voice wasn't beckoned. All she hears is the void.

A moment of interruption. Distracted. Quin’s kick connected with her stomach, sent Nemesis staggering backward, lightsabers moving away from her opponent’s face. She regained her footing, lightsabers reawakening.

Left hand twirls a blade, repositions and repurposes it, holds it in a reverse grip in front of her face. Right hand beside her face, blade pointing forward toward her opponent, hilt in an overhand grip.

Bending forward, knees bent, weapons at the ready, motionless, Nemesis gave Quin a chance to convince her to quit but he would have to do so with his blade. If he didn’t then his former friend named Leh'Min'Ayd would leap like a tiger in an instant, and he wouldn't know what hit him.

Cheriss spotted Vayla’s pivot as she did her own. With both of their right sides exposed, Cheriss leaned back as she anticipated another attack. It was just as well because it was then that the Jedi suddenly switched to offense, swinging her blade toward Cheriss’ chest as she avoided the disarming move. At the same time, she felt Vayla pull her forward with the Force.

With the tug, Cheriss would use it to drop into a forward roll, ducking beneath the swing of the Jedi’s blade and springing back up to her feet behind her. As she rolled, she couldn’t help noticing that a few strands of her hair were sizzling from being in brief contact with Vayla’s lightsaber, and she scowled.

With Vayla’s back turned to her for that split second, Cheriss aimed a downward cut from her right to left in an attempt to split Vayla’s torso from her right shoulder to her left hip. At the same time she curled the fingers of her left hand and drew her arm back, trying to pull Vayla’s head toward her with the Force in order to unbalance her.

Pivoting and aligning her front with her opponent, Vayla saw her enter a roll as her saber missed its target. With its horizontal swing already to her right, she simply arced the blade downward toward Cheriss’ new location.

Vayla concurrently pivoted on her left foot, bringing her right backward to once again align her front with her opponent. This would bring her right shoulder out of the path of Cheriss’ lightsaber.

As Cheriss swung to Vayla’s right, the Jedi arced her sword downward in the same direction. Depending on timing, the Jedi's blade would arrive behind the red blade to cleave through the Sith’s right arm. At the least both blades would clash and end one another’s attack.

However, it took longer to roll and come out of it than to slash with an adjustment in direction. Cheriss could be attacked while standing up, and may have neither the height nor time advantage.

As for Cheriss’ left hand, Vayla’s own left hand opened to counteract the attack, pull against the pull. Failing that, Cheriss would end up pulling the Jedi and her saber further forward to get behind the Sith’s weapon and sever her arm as intended.

Quin didn’t know who his kick had hurt more— himself or Lemon. When she staggered back, all he could see was her younger self falling back on Thila. This time though, he had taken on the role of the Sith. The thought alone made him grimace. Was he no better than Cheriss for attacking Lemon?

It was stupid to compare himself with the likes of her, but he couldn’t help it.

As Lemon regrouped and shifted into her fighting stance, Quin reluctantly did the same. Only he had his lightsaber up at the level of his head, pointing forward and parallel to the ground, two fingers of his left pointing in the same directions. The default position for Soresu.

“Don’t, Lemon.” He tried to convince her. “Please.” She leapt at him instead, and Quin was forced into blocking again. As she pressed forward he pressed back, avoiding striking her at all costs. He didn’t know how much longer he could do this for.
