As Cass walked across the rock of the Palace floor, it wasn’t long until she heard the unmistakable sound of blaster fire and the commotion that ensued. Her hands were on her hips by then, each gripping the handle of a pistol in its holster, keeping her combat contained until she could assess the situation. Though, it was her droid who did so for her.
[“The Mandalorian party is under attack. Nagai pirates by the looks of it. Team Mando’s hiding in the smoke. One down but evidently alive. Three pirates eliminated. Ooh, Mando has a walker and the pirates are retreating...upstairs.”]
Cass picked up on her droid’s pause right away. Upstairs meant one way. My way.
[“Solid copy. Maintain position and reports.”]
Her pace quickened, hands squeezing handles. Her head tilted just then, a sudden spark of interference barraging her comm. [“Rawl? Rawl, do you copy?”]
[“Uh, sorry, Cass, seems the pirates have picked up on my position on their retreat. I’m—”]
The 4EY Scout Droid found itself clinging to the ceiling one moment and falling to the floor the next, courtesy of a blaster bolt pummeling into the crete beside its position. It was enough to drop the droid so that it fell on its very feet right upon the stairs. Rawl’s first reaction was to look left, look right. On one side was a fading group of pirates. On the other was a lone buzz droid in pursuit. Brave little droid, brave indeed.
//Um...// Rawl called out to its metallic counterpart. //I’m terribly sorry for the intrusion but apparently I’ve been swept off my feet. I’m Rawl, by the way. My master is—//
He didn’t have time to finish before either the pirates’ bolts made him dance or the buzz droid all but shut him up with words or action. Whatever the case, Rawl decided to dodge what he could and keep up his surveillance, floor or ceiling be damned.
[“Rawl? Rawl? Answer me, you crosswired little di’kut, or I’ll—”]
It was Cass’ turn to trail off as she caught movement toward her own position. The hall was behind her, the hallway before her leading to that same flight of stairs that descended toward Team Mando. Coming up, of course, was a group of Nagai pirates, and toward her even if unbeknownst to them. That, though, wasn’t what had stopped Cass in her tracks. Not retreating, she realized as she hugged a wall and peered round the corner to witness more or less a dozen Nagai exit a room to head toward those heading up the stairs. Regrouping.
It made sense. Evidently, these Nagai raiders formed a greater collective that had most likely split up into multiple teams to plunder the Palace and punish anyone caught in their sights. For all Cass knew, there was yet another dozen somewhere else; no telling how vast in number the pirates were overall. Not that she had time to ponder it. These kriffers know what they’re up against now: Mandalorians and a walker at the very least. They just didn’t know about the Mandalorian behind them. They would soon enough, given that three from the second group were heading her way with missile launchers in their grips. Druk.
Twisting her lips, Cass waited until the anti-vehicle combatants were in position, weapons raised toward the stairs and thus backs turned, and then she rounded the corner. Her pistols trained, the bolts pummeled into the backs of two, before the one spun around to fire his missile toward her instead of the AT-RT he had been waiting for. She hadn’t quite expected that. As her eyes widened, Cass quickly spun away and dove just as the wall beside her exploded into a million pieces, a large stone banging on the floor inches in front of her head. Helmet or no, it just might have crushed it.
