As per Vanity that would be cool, I side on the War of the Silmarils too, old ages FTW (though a player-made original fellowship would be really fun)

Just remember that if we start in the War of the Jewels/ War of Wrath there will be no Men or Dwarf playable characters unless we start at the late period of the War of Wrath when a lot of the big players and events will have ended (Feanor, Fingolfin dead etc). Man and Dwarves didnt awaken until near the tail end of the First Age of the Children of Iluvatar.

I suppose if we started it after the Third Battle of the War of Jewels, Dagor Aglareb, we'd be able to have all races....

Personally, I just like the humor of this group of people forming a Fellowship and retelling the story of the War of the Ring, but I'm also a big fan of the First/Second age so I'm all for duking it out with Morgoth

I'd be interested if it was a replacement to the fellowship that tried to destroy the ring. A different plot would obviously have to be built to accommodate the Player Characters.

I'd be down to RP it either way though; whether its a Fellowship or the War of Jewels/Wrath period.

@Rom: Are you suggesting we completely change the plot of the trilogy by altering the course the Fellowship takes, or just replace the characters that were in the Fellowship with ours?

Because the former would require other characters to be replaced and Tolkien's canon to be butchered (not that I have any problem with that) and the latter isn't going to be very interesting.

I saw we let it start out in a similar way - Ring is discovered, the call goes out for the Free Peoples of Middle Earth to unite for Council at the Last Homely House and Elrond opens the council....

We have a Maiar character as the only actual replacement to remove Gandalf but keep the powerful/wise guiding force and then create our own characters with their own motivations and goals, whether they want to take the ring for themselves from the beginning or get close to a point.

Once the Council is called, it's all open for us to interpret. Do we want to head for the Misty Mountains or cut through the Pass of Rohan. Do we want to make an alliance with the Rohirrim or leave them behind to deal with Saruman themselves? Will we make a covert move into Mordor, or will we attempt to move in with an army at our backs and make that final push towards Mount Doom? Will we just ride the eagles there, drop the ring into the volcano from the sky, and then have fun attacking Saruman (who has been studying Ring Lore and may make his own ring, thus completely taking us into whole new territory) and the remaining Wraiths as tehy attempt to strike back after the death of Sauron.

Who knows what we could do if we decide to just use Tolkiens setting and plot device and drive the world with our own characters acting with and against the established NPCs (Saruman, Denethor, Sauron, Theoden, Elrond, Galadriel, etc)

We're a band of warrriors dedicated to fighting Sauron fighting in different parts of Middle Earth against Sauron while the last hope for the Freeps of Middle Earth move towards Mordor with Isildur's Bane.

I just didnt know how everyone would feel about playing a campaign where the NPCs are the ones that really win the entire shebang and we're just fighting in a segment of it.

Ok... well, if we decide to do a War of Jewels, War of Wrath story I volunteer to be the DM. If we do the DIY Fellowship, I'll be the DM if no one else will or I'm a dwarf Hammer warrior.

Let's do a poll so following this post. Say if you're taking part and whether you want the WoJ/WoW or the Fellowship. From there I'll either give 3 days to design a char for the Fellowship one or I'll give it a week so I and others can plan a coherent plot for the WoJ one.
