Melkor excelled in his classes at the university, though he drew the ire of his instructors due to his fascination with the lore of the Sith: an order of dark side worshipers who were said to have gone extinct with the death of the last Galactic Emperor. Melkor himself was also fascinated with the rule of the Old Empire, which only furthered his alienation from his fellow classmates. However, it pushed him closer to Bendak Ko, who visited him from time-to-time at the university and soon took up the role of his informal mentor. Near the end of Melkor's studies, Bendak revealed himself as a member of the Sith Eternal cult and offered to train Melkor in the ways of the dark side of the Force. Feeling cut off from his family and reviled by his teachers and classmates, Melkor agreed. When he graduated, he followed Bendak into the Unknown Regions and there began down the dark path.
Among the Sith Eternal, Bendak Ko was considered somewhat of a relic. His fascination with the ancient Sith Lords led him to rely upon their lessons more than most in the cult. He passed his fascinations on to his new apprentice, though Melkor naturally came to adopt the more mainstream views of the cult: that the Sith could be learned from, but that they had fallen for a reason and that the dark side was in need of new stewards. He arrogantly believed himself to be a rising definition of that new stewardship. However, he did come to harbor a disgust for the Jedi Order. While not outright hatred, he came to believe the proliferations of their ways would lead the whole galaxy into further stagnation.

Melkor Damask was a being of utter darkness hidden behind a well-constructed mask. On the surface, he was a brooding, stoic, but intelligent Muun with a keen interest in the history of the galaxy and a strong mind for religion and philosophy. He often socialized with other beings who possessed a like-mind, though this often resulted in Melkor becoming associated with cultists and the dark outcasts of society. Those who knew Melkor understood him to be an expert on the occult and, as a result, he was himself an outcast among his own people on Muunilinst, as well as among those well-respected in academia. However, despite these public views about him from his peers, he did not shirk the duty of passing on his knowledge, and would teach those who asked him what he knew.
In his public persona, his political views were also somewhat questionable. Owing to his Sith Eternal affiliations, Melkor viewed the Free Worlds' Alliance with disdain, along with its predecessor the New Republic. He lamented the loss of unity, strength, and order the old Galactic Empire provided and was outspoken in his desire to see the galaxy return to such a state. He had a less admirable view of the spiritual successor of the Empire, the First Order, whom he referred to as "children playing with the Empire's toys." His love of the Empire was on display at his home, where he kept old Imperial memorabilia and even flew in starships reminiscent of the old Imperial Navy.
Beneath the surface, Melkor Damask was fully immersed in the dark side of the Force. He believed it was the Force's natural state and loathed all those who stood in the light. As a result, Melkor was a being with a black moral compass. Greed consumed him, as did covetousness, and he fed these emotions by seeking both more power and more material possessions that harkened back to the days of the Sith Order and the Old Empire. He also held no qualms with murder or torture if it meant obtaining what he desired. However, unlike most dark siders, Melkor was not subservient to his anger. He was slow to enrage and, even angered, allowed the potent emotion to boil under the surface to feed his connection to the dark side. Instead, he preferred pragmatism and manipulation as opposed to letting his anger get the better of him.

He could often be seen using a long, twisted walking stick as a cane to get about. However, this was for show, as Melkor was nimble and acrobatic and had no actual need for his cane. Because of his immersion in the dark side of the Force, Melkor often appeared gaunt and sickly, with wrinkles and darker skin than was common for a Muun of his young age. Melkor used this feeble appearance as a means of deceiving potential enemies to his true potential and the real danger that he represented.

Melkor was particularly skilled in the use of the mental aspects of the Force. He was a strong telepath and could easily communicate his thoughts without speaking. He could even manipulate the way his voice sounded when he communicated in this way, allowing him to sound like other people, so long as he had previously heard their voice. When he wanted to torture his enemies for information, he was not above forcing his way into their minds to do so. Finally, to hide his Force-sensitivity, he had the ability to dampen his presence in the Force.
Melkor had abilities outside of his dark side training. He had a keen love of flying and excelled as a starfighter pilot. His use of the Force sharpened his flying instincts, though he had little mechanical and upkeep skill, and thus relied on droids to accomplish this task. He also had an archeological degree from the University of Bar'leth, which meant he was well-versed in the history of the galaxy and was knowledgeable about rare and esoteric artifacts, particularly those belonging to certain Force-religions. During his schooling, he learned to understand and read ancient languages, and he from his Sith Eternal Master, he learned to speak and understand the runic language of the Sith. - R E L A T I O N S H I P S
