this was actually going to be my character sandy's theme song originally. something akin to a siren calling towards the sea. but i wanted to focus on her more reckless side of her, which is why i chose MIA's song over this. either way, this is a song i've had on replay and find myself playing throughout the day.
Probably the one truly "obscure" artists I listen to, for quite a while and he's finally getting some traction on the internet, albeit slowly. MΔRRI$ (MORRIS) is an experimental noise DJ. It sounds really presumptuous, but honestly there just isn't a genre to "classify" him, and he even coined his own genre for himself, GOOMBAWAVE. One thing strings throughout, he loves bass. Who doesn't?! It's a bit lenient towards hip hop instrumentals, but with his own vocal samples which are usually stretched out, and some (like this one) are high-pitched, chipmunk-style it's just not fair to class him as a hip hop DJ. This particular song uses a Rihanna sample, but is blended so well, everything honestly is perfect about this song to me, I think it's his magnum opus. Good for anyone who likes artists like Shlohmo or Toro y Moi, maybe even Flying Lotus for anyone who listens to stuff like that. Again, it's more hip hop centric, bass and all that, but it can't really be put into just a hip hop box because a lot of his other music is a lot more experimental than the run-of-the-mill snap and bass from most mainstream hip hop music.
It's a hit-or-miss, like any up-and-comming artists, but honestly to me they're about 80% hits. If you're interested into delving into other genre's, I'd definetely recommend giving him a whirl, I hope he doesn't disappoint. Here's the links to some other personal favorites of mine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swpv_zhV5FQ -- The bass on this one is so clean and crisp, listening to it from heavy-bass powered headphones (Beats by Dre or most Sony Headphones). I personally use a set of Sennheiser's, but even the typical iPhone 5 earbuds would work great. Bass from actual headphones (over-the-ear) just shake and vibrate so perfect and almost tickle the ear, it's scary good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JnKT_eLKUM This is actually the first song I heard from him, again laced with a banging bass and super slick bass. Even a killer breakdown near the 1:20 mark, but it's not one of those "jump to this part" songs, it's a progression thing, and he does it perfectly. After hearing this song, I honestly just wondered why this guy wasn't more popular, he needs the exposure in my opinion. Great music.
(sorry for the music breakdown, I got nothing else keeping me entertained this morning, work is getting hectic, but I managed to slip this in some time during the morning meeting.)
ps. I love that Minus the Bear song, man that was a classic album for me. Ooh, my hipster lions are rattling with nostalgia.
