Standing just over 6 feet tall, with broad shoulders and a swimmer's build, Valin Thorne appears to be a prime specimen of the Human race. Not overly muscular and mildly limber, the Sith's silhouette will not appear to be that of a fighter's, to the untrained eye. He sports a full head of mildly disheveled hair in shades of brown, and a pair of silvery-green eyes that, much like the rest of his body, remain untouched by any kind of technology or alchemy. Now a fully grown man, his boyish features have all but disappeared, leaving behind a face of sharp, chiselled contours further in their stead. A couple of wrinkles in their early, early stages further emphasise these traits and grant the man the distinct look of an experienced individual.

Practical but vain, one will seldom find Valin with an unkempt appearance or reprehensible posture. Having been born a poor man, Thorne attempts to reinvent himself as a King, in the proverbial sense of the word. Thusly, he's learned how to stand, walk, eat and even speak in an eloquence and erudition that would have otherwise escaped him. The young Sith's own nature has begun to assimilate these practiced scenarios and even begun to naturally embody this grace he'd forced upon himself, but he remains a man bred by conflict. As such, assertiveness - possibly to neigh uncomfortable levels - alongside the occasional more brusque motions that hint towards his less tasteful nature.

His dress-code is directly related to the way he carries himself. Simple, but somewhat fashionable getups and somber colours - save for the occasional Sith red - are a good way to describe his wardrobe. His wears are generally items that tend to hug the body and, as such, allow for greater ranges of motions. The man strongly dislikes the sporting of robes but due to his low standing will, at times, be seen with them.

Valin is unaware of his mother's species. His anger towards the mother who had not helped him has kept him from testing himself to discover his roots. To his knowledge, the mother had both Human and Near-Human heritage, but his abilities and physical traits remain safely within the boundaries of what is considered to be Human.

PERSONALITY
top
A puzzling creature. The young Sith is horrified by his own vicious tendencies for they are an eternal reminder of the father who loathed, beat and belittled him, but at the same time sees them as his source of power in the Dark Side, and has been known to resort to them to pursue the respect of others through fear, a poor replacement for his father's affection: To rid himself of his demons, this Sith has chosen to become one.

A troubled youth, Valin is constantly guarded by cloaks of arrogance and sadism. His sly wit, apparent lack of compassion and highly perceptive nature have allowed the young Sith to dabble in the ways of Psychological Warfare. Though little more than a novice in this practice, he revels in using his sharp tongue as both a sword and a shield, capable of make comments that both expose weaknesses of others or conceal his own under the guise of a dry, sardonic humour.

His father's abuse has turned the man vengeful, power-hungry and paranoid. Most days he feels the only person in the world he can trust is his older brother but alas, having known the cruel sting of family's betrayal from his mother's passivity, everyone is kept at some length. Unable to perceive others else as anything but threats who are there to be control or be controlled by him, spending a day in Thorne's shoes would prove exhausting.

Unforgiving and manipulative, this is a man who has shut off his humanity to anyone other than a select few and will stop at close to nothing to accomplish his goals. Thorne tries hard to stay two steps ahead of the game and will generally have contingency plans. Most importantly, this is a man who's made it his mission to learn from his mistakes. For all his shortcomings, Valin does bear some sense of honour, and is a man who will stay true to his word and the bargains he strikes, although he has been known to search for loopholes.

This Sith stands trapped within a cage of his own making, an endless cycle spiralling downwards that flows from self-adoration to self-loathing. This great imbalance in his ego has been known to cause abrupt changes in temperament as well as a latent sense of aggression that does not seem to dissipate. Shrewd, deceitful and volatile Valin Thorne can be considered Mercurial in the truest sense of the word.

SKILLS
top
On a quest towards transcendence, Thorne has made quite a bit of progress. Having chosen to take advantage of the knowledge the Empire has to offer before he begins his ascent through its ranks, this particular Sith has gained some degree of familiarity with hand-to-hand combat, as well as a variety of non-Sith weapons that include vibroswords and knives, electrostaves and even blaster pistols. These degrees of mastery are, mainly because the diversified areas of study, fairly low.

Being Brentaalan, the only language he was taught growing up was the Basic Galactic Standard and, needless to say, he is highly proficient with it. The man has some skills in other languages, but at far too low a level to understand speech, let alone hold a conversation.

Much too proud to have it be any other way, Thorne has learned to pilot both small crafts and speeders. Being Sith, he was naturally entitled to learn evasive manoeuvres, skills he's dedicated many hours to honing. An able pilot on the testing grounds, whose greatest flaw is the very obvious lack of real-world experience. Largely oblivious to the many tricks of the trade only experts are privy to, the Acolyte may find himself fighting uphill when pitted against other crafts in space.

Painting and sculpting were his solace from the rage-filled world of his youth, something that has translated into his adult self. Although a packed schedule and powerful drive now prevent Valin from dedicating as much time to it as he used to, he values these traits greatly. To him, they not only embody a sense of nostalgia that came with the few happy memories from his early days, but also remain a useful tool in channelling the frustration and anger that naturally come with the carrying of his many crosses. Due to his secretive nature this pastime, like most aspects of his personal life, is known only to a select few, in spite of not going to lengths to conceal it.
In channelling his pent-up emotions, Thorne often feels as though a veil has been lifted in his thoughts and, as such, believes that some of his greatest ideas came during an artistic streak.

ABILITIES
top
Having chosen to pursue the path of the Sith, the majority of Thorne's training revolves around his lightsabers and the Force. Mildly proficient in the First of the seven forms, as expected of an Acolyte, Thorne has begun to delve into the Fifth Form, the Way of the Krayt Dragon as his soon-to-be main form of combat. Being highly aggressive but understanding the value in a powerful defence, he's opted to embrace Shien's mantra of swift, precise motions to accomplish a goal dispensing minimal amounts of energy as well as Djem So's aggressive, vicious strikes to secure the win. This form is a way for Thorne to make use of and learn to control his vicious nature, in hopes of turning this great weakness into his greatest asset. A long, arduous road awaits but - for now, at least - the young Sith is willing to see it through. And, as they say, when the student is ready, a teacher appears.

Like all Acolytes, Thorne received training in each of the Core Powers. Sadly, his talent in the Force is unsubstantial and, as such, very few of his abilities in the Force are noteworthy. His greatest accomplishments lie in body and perception enhancement techniques such as Force Sight, Force Speed and Force Jump, and his major shortcomings in using the Force to alter the perception of others - Force Cloak, Force Persuasion, etc. Ever since he'd slain his father, the man has displayed an affinity to Pyrokinesis. Lacking training in both it and the ways of the Force, this ability of his remains mediocre.

Vica Vesk, known to Thorne as Eris, has recently begun to teach him in the ways of the force, including a few, less common but highly useful abilities, while his less-than kind meeting with Vecna, a powerful Kushari, have forced the man to up his game in lightsaber usage.

BIOGRAPHY

— No Peace —
Brentaal IV, middle of nowhere. A child is born to the Thorne household, dubbed Fenn. The current family was composed of simply him and his father. The mother had perished, not long after the boy's birth, murdered by a Near-Human during a mugging gone wrong. The killer was never caught. The father - a highly conservative individual - was devastated, but ended up remarrying not long after, needing a woman to raise the child and tend to the house. An old fashioned man with no clue how to deal with his emotions, Father Thorne, whose name shall not be mentioned, soon had his grief warped into Human Supremacy with Near-Humans - the filth that had ended the love of his life, as he would put it - at the helm of his unending hatred. Often turning to the bottle in hopes of finding answers, the man had clear violent streaks but kept his feelings to himself when it came to his family.

Not long after the second anniversary of his first wife's murder, Fenn's stepmother received news that she was pregnant. Nothing could cheer the Thorne patriarch up, but it certainly was enough to lighten the mood, until the day of his birth. Valin, the newest addition to the family, had his mother's eyes and his father's hair, a harmonious mix between the parents.

As was customary in Brentaalan hospitals, tests were immediately run on the newborn to catch any particular diseases or deformities that could threaten something as fragile as a new life. The child was perfectly fine, but these tests revealed a peculiarity: This kid was not entirely human. Thinking that there was something wrong, father dearest quickly summoned the medical practitioners to inform them of the mixup and was promptly told that the test was absolutely correct, and that the child's near-human blood came from his mother, a hybrid herself.

All the feelings that had been bottled up for three long years now slowly oozed out of its poor containment, as the man's world collapsed around him. The grown man quickly vanished from the hospital, returning only a week later as a changed man. By then, Valin and his mother would be home alongside Fenn. Like a crazed bull, the Thorne patriarch stormed into his own house to face the woman he felt had betrayed and tricked him by not revealing she was "sub-human" and the disgust he felt in having spawned the very thing that had taken his wife from him. The man's quiet evaporated within days and his pent up frustrations were quickly discharged into the now submissive wife. Be it for a sliver of honour, or the fear of what would happen to him should he kill a toddler.

Verbally abused for the entirety of his life, Valin's physical "treatment" began at age three, at which point his mother was simply glad she was no longer the main focus of the abuse, something that the young Thorne is incapable of forgiving, to this day. The boy's only solace was his brother, who defended him every change he got, at the cost of his father's rage. The two grew incredibly close, brought together by the violence of their father and passivity of their mother, and had only one word in their minds for as long as they can care to remember: Escape.

For ten long years, the duo was forced to endure what they could not forgive, but on the day of Fenn's sixteenth birthday, their bodies screamed "No More", and they hit the road, never looking back. The two scraped up all the money they could spare and found a way to reach Cormond, where they would then meet with an individual who claimed he could smuggle anyone out of the country. Sadly, two young teens from way out in the Styx had no idea of the dangers of the world. The gossip they had heard was no doubt bait forged by a Slave Trader who felt that things would be much easier if his targets came to him. The brothers spent the next year and a half of their lives being shuffled about from crate to crate, until a buyer presented himself.

Having been submitted to every test imaginable, as if they were pieces of cattle, the traders quickly realised that the duo were Force Positive and quickly proceeded to sell them to the Empire in return for a quick buck. Now, these brothers bred by hatred and conflict found themselves in the dog-eat-dog world of the Sith. Forced to learn the ways of the Dark Side, to fight and win against those who would see them brought under heel or perish like the dogs others deemed them to be. Older but determined to succeed, the Brothers spent the next eight long years risking their lives on the sands of Korriban, and were ultimately deemed powerful enough Acolytes to be allowed to set foot outside of the Academy.

— Passion —

Having always been on the receiving end of violence, Valin found a sense of enjoyment in instilling fear into the hearts of men. In one of the many ironies of fate, his father's abuse had ultimately made the son mirror the parent in many ways: an emotionally crippled adult who revelled in violence and in asserting dominance over others; a bulb of festering rage that lays just under the skin is slowly clawing its way out like nails digging through a soft rock. But Valin was not his father. His many years of feeling powerless and Sith training had given him a broader spectrum.

Against Fenn's wishes, who simply wanted to put his past behind him and gain enough power to protect himself, Valin journeyed back home with a simple purpose: Revenge. He cut down his own father and mother, the person who had beat and belittled him all his life, and the one who stood by and did nothing as she watched her deranged husband turn her own flesh and blood into a monstrous creature, capable of nothing but hate. As he cut the two individuals down, Valin Thorne swore to use every weapon at his disposal to rise a King from the ashes of his old life.

Generally speaking as a new member you will be restricted to the lowest rank. Which for the Sith are the Acolytes. Secondly for age, it is generally a creator determined thing. You age up when you deem it necessary.

Now on to your character. I would define the proficiency of your force abilities and tone them down a bit. It seems that you are just slightly ambitious; unless it is a basic ability. Also depending on your age the Core Worlds were under the now defunct Galactic Alliance; this will complicate your background about being trained by a Sith. Also on your master bit I would contact the Faction Leader Weiss, Lord of Schemes to determine if this is acceptable; thus assume rewrites might have to happen. This is my two cents but overall a very good character and a good foundation to build on.

I'll leave the edits to the faction leaders, not bad over all.

Looks good so far. Timeline-wise, we're in 1023 ABY. You can make him whatever age you like and bump him up at your leisure.

Thank you very much.

This age should fit with the backstory well enough... I think.

Gave a few other touches to the bio, hopefully the flaws Chaos pointed out are at least less evident, now.

I would prefer the master be a Crusader or Master, not Lord.

Weiss, sent you a PM, not sure if you've read it. It was wrong either way, so yeah.

What I want to know is this: What is the difference, to you, between a Crusader or Master and a Lord? Because I've been wracking my brain on this, but I really can't see any relation between a Lord, a Crusader or a Master. I've visited the wiki since in case I was mistaken, but I still can't see it. To me, the three are fairly similar. So clearly, there's either something I'm missing, or this server interprets things differently. Either way, information on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against changing anything, really just curious.

Many thanks

It's ranks in the Sith, I believe.

Lords are higher than crusaders, therefor more powerful, IIRC.

Hopefully this explanation about the Sith Hierarchy will help to clarify things a bit for you. So far as I can tell, Lords are basically one step down from being members of the Dark Council, so their position within the Order and the Imperium is an especially superlative one that places them well beyond the regulations of your more "rank and file" Sith.

... Aaaaand now I feel incredibly stupid about having completely missed that thread. After actually looking for it, to boot. Lol.

Anyway, you two are lifesavers. Thank you for the help.

That thread, as well as a few others, have really opened my eyes in regards to this forum. Will be performing changes in the bio soon enough.

Most people miss a few things the first days. The site as you can see is massive and if you weren't a little lost. You sir must be incredibly skilled.

"Minor changes" somehow led to a complete overhaul. I had felt that the character needed a little soul, so to speak. Hopefully I didn't overdo it this time around.

I do apologise for all this back and forth stuff as well as the continuous posting, but to say that my "system" for character creation is chaos would be an understatement.

Star of Chaos, having read through those threads, I think I have a much better understanding on what you meant when you wrote that I was being overly ambitious. Hopefully that's been corrected.

And Weiss, I am still a bit on the fence about this new Backstory, so I'll have to trouble you again for a "yay" or "nay".

As always, especially if you spot something you don't particularly agree with or simply have a piece of constructive criticism, I'm all ears.

Thanks again, and apologies for "making" you all read through again.

Reformatted the bio and reworded the written sections. The gist of it is still the same, though. The biography section isn't there just yet, but it's slowly shaping up.

Many thanks to Bee for the template I totally did not blatantly copy.
