The Venatori

HISTORY
Formed approximately a century after the death of Andraste, the Venatori were created when there were no Jedi in the galaxy. Without "guardians of peace and justice," the Dark Side corrupted many of the Sith within the Empire, and as this corruption became more pronounced, the Venatori were born. The first of the Venatori organized themselves in opposition to the violent outbursts they had witnessed by their fellow Sith against innocent civilians. They swiftly grew disenchanted by the corrupting nature of the Dark Side, but still believed in the potential for good in the Empire.

These first Sith joined together to oppose the brutality that had been sown by many other Sith. With Jedi no longer in existence, the group that formed was hardly one that fostered protection and peace. Their Sith roots left them still in close contact with the Dark Side, though they do not embrace it like other Sith.

Their work stretched on for several centuries in secret until eventually their leader, Varyn Rask ascended to the Imperial throne in approximately 6,500 BBY, 500 years after the death of Andraste. With his death at the Battle of Korriban, their resources and influence dwindled out of existence.

Though the Venatori were at their height many thousands of years ago, records of them still exist in the modern day. During the final days of the Eternal's rule over the Sith Eternal, some Sith had begun to investigate such an order again. Though nothing was ever born of these considerations, the idea was planted in the minds of more than a few Sith. Some even say the ISB's Venatores were inspired by the long-lost organization.

PHILOSOPHY

"When a forest grows too wild, a purging fire is inevitable and natural"

Once upon a time considered by their fellow Sith to be "radicals," the Venatori were a group devoted to the preservation of the galaxy through the Empire. They believe in the reform of the Empire from within, though their means are quite violent – akin to revolutionaries. Their goal is to ensure that the galaxy is protected by supporting and ensuring that the Empire shapes into an organization that not only governs but protects its citizens.

The most accurate term to describe the Venatori was as a sect of Dark Jedi. Although they used the Dark Side, they do not embrace it in the way of most Sith. They have witnessed the destructive and dangerous nature of the Dark Side and view its frequent use as a threat to the Empire they believe in protecting.

While many Sith would consider pursuit of the Dark Side to be an end in and of itself, the Venatori view it as a tool for use in the most dire of situations; a necessary evil that must sometimes be exercised for the greater good. Because they have witnessed enough of their brethren fall to the Dark Side's sway and harm others merely for the sake of inflicting suffering, they discourage its use on a regular basis. There was historically an understanding among the group's members that those who indulge in the Darkness and lose their way may - and likely will - one day be hunted down by their brothers in arms. Such is the risk that all Venatori accept.

Nevertheless, this does not make them Lightsiders. They subject the Force to their will and drive their powers through their passions and emotions. Jedi and other Light Side-practicing sects are viewed with distrust and high levels of suspicion due in large part to their anti-Imperial and anti-authoritarian views.

FUNCTIONALITY
The most accurate term to describe the Venatori would have been a secret society. With members ranging over time from the hundreds to only a handful, the methods they used often varied. At the height of their power, they were capable of waging full wars against the assets of the most violent Sith. However, as time passed their numbers dwindled and they were reduced to more subversive means often including assassination, sabotage, blackmail, and hit-and-run attacks against the personal assets of the most brutal of the Sith.

Now, the first inklings of recreating such a group have begun to form, they have no assets to their name and will have to find creative means of accomplishing their goals.

INTENT
The intent of this article is to bring forward a historical organization into the current timeline. While it does not currently exist, there are some individuals with intentions of re-founding it. I wanted to supply the historical details in a more accessible format from having to go to timeline archives.
