Clone Wars handled it pretty well too. Where people fighting Jedi were able to dodge, tackle, or even punch them when they had their lightsabers out.

I miss the Clone Wars. T_T

But i always knew about the 501st (Battlefront Two anyone? :D) I just thought the Stormtroopers were all supposed to be badass. XD I was more going for the idea that we have some Stormtroopers that are actually freakishly epic and make us realize that yes there are some who can actually hit the target. XD For example, the assassin clones. In the Revenge of the Sith game I remember thinking "Wow these guys are freaking annoying but badass as hell". I want a squad of Stormtroopers trained to take on Jedi or Jedi Like characters. Like how in the first Clone Wars show when Grievous owned the Jedi then those Clones came in and made him retreat. Sure, probably through numbers and fire power, but just by the way the leader commanded them it made it seem like they were actually prepared for this type of target.

I mean, hasn't it been like 30 years? Surely the Empire has sat down and thought "Huh... maybe we're going to have to start training people to be able to deal with Jedi.

Not necessarily. All reports so far have suggested that Luke has disappeared, and has been gone anywhere from 30 years to 10 years. One way or another, we're probably going to see a new era radically different from the EU, where, by 30 years after Episode VI, there is still no Jedi Order. Whether there are literally no other Jedi, or Luke has been training them in secret in the far reaches of space, the stormtroopers probably won't have been fighting Jedi.

Nah not like theyve been actually engaging them in combat, but the Empire has been training them just in case. Gotta have a backup plan.

Depends on the context. They may think that Luke is gone forever. If they haven't seen a Jedi in decades then they don't necessarily have a reason to train stormtroopers. Especially if the new dark siders are affiliated with the Empire, which I've heard they are.

That IS the idea floating around. ^_^ I just think the Empire needs to be... proactive. I want an actual threat this trilogy, not just some badass Darksider who leads the incompetent.

Someone should tally up how many minutes a lightsaber is ignited in the OT and compare it to the amount of lightsabers in the PT.

There are more lightsabers in the PT than there are minutes a lightsaber has appeared in the OT.

I've literally written entire threads and essay long posts on this forum about how the choreographers and performers behind The Raid films need to be involved with this movie....and then it happens.

Cool.

What's good about Iko and Yayan and the director of those films Gareth Edwards, is that they mainly take influence from the works of Jackie Chan, who to be quite honest, was and still sort of is, a genius, because of many inherent principles that are really well explained in this video, which also informs you on what the problems are with most modern American action films when it comes to fights:

These are the same principles employed by the team behind The Raid films.

My main concern, is with whose editing and shooting this film, because that could make or break the entire movie. Editing is everything, especially when it comes to fight scenes.

I hate Daniel Mindel as a cinematographer, his style is too flashy and lacks any kind of substance whatsoever, he's also constantly aping off of the styles of far superior DP's all the ****ing time. As far as the editors are concerned, their work is mostly 'meh' to not noteworthy at all.

Oh snap, Kaeb knows way more about martial arts movies than I do. That's refreshing. None of my friends want to study the fights with me.

I predict at least one extended hand to hand scene. Probably Jedi v. Mando or Trooper. You can't pull in the Raid guys for just thirty seconds of amazing brutality. However, I could see them using lightsabers, what with the way they were working around the machetes in Redemption.

These two scenes are what made me think of Star Wars while watching The Raid:

The dynamic camera angles, the shots tracking the fighters limbs, the fact that both action and reaction are shot in the same frame so that the viewer feels 100% of the impact and is therefore more immersed in the action and the constant back and forth between pure hand to hand combat and the use of various forms of weaponry, not to mention how they utilize their surrounding environment. My only critique of The Raid films in earnest, is their obvious use of digital blood splatter and digital muzzle flashes, that lessens the impact somewhat of certain scenes, but that was used purely for budgetary reasons, so it wasn't exactly a creative decision, Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian both starred in both films yes, but they also worked intimately with all of the choreography with every single fighter on all of their films, including their first film Merantau. Having them on board for a Science Fantasy adventure is incredibly exciting.

These few scenes did the same for me in The Raid 2, but there are about 18 fights in this movie:

And of course, the final fight scene:

All of these scenes are just a sampling of what these guys offer in these movies in terms of both martial arts and pure action execution, because they understand intimately that action isn't just about action, action is about motivation, because without it it has no impact whatsoever. These fight scenes also use a lot of bladed weaponry, and other more unique weapons for a martial arts film, like claw hammers, curved blades and baseball bats. If you replaced any of those weapons with a lightsaber or some sort of other science fiction weapon or gadget, with a science fiction environment, with science fiction props and science fiction aesthetics? It would be pretty incredible.

I mean, just go to that Prakoso fight scene, replace his machete with a lightsaber and imagine he's in the Coruscant Underworld and you've got yourself a maverick Jedi fight scene.

There is a lot of potential here.

So... violent, I love it.

I usually dislike action films, but these clips are great. It would be cool if we saw more use of the lightsaber hilt, the blade being turned off and on and the hilt being using to whack people. Like the scene on the train with the hammers.

Though this is still exactly what comes to my mind when I watch these clips:

Yeah, South Korean cinema has always been great with martial arts, Oldboy is no exception and it's not even a martial arts movie.

The lightsaber thing is something I've mentioned before, that if you have a weapon that can retract like that, it's very likely that you would constantly utilize that feature to distract and confuse your opponent. If your opponent goes for an overhead slash to deflect the impact of your lightsaber, you extinguish it, get through their guard as they overarch their attack and then you kill them.

Apparently this already existed at some point in the EU, so go figure, someone else thought the same thing too.

Fights need variation afterall, if it's just people wacking glowsticks together over and over again then it becomes pretty ****ing boring, especially when they're always the same colour, wielded by dudes dressed the exact same as other dudes.

It's also worth noting, that Julie Estelle who played Hammer Girl in The Raid 2, had literally zero background in martial arts whatsoever.

Iko and Yayan still managed to get her to do that entire scene by herself, without doubles, so **** anyone who makes that excuse for shitty fight scene execution in modern cinema.
