The upbeat voice of the announcer was beginning to give Pavelo a headache. Despite the announcer's hefty claims of guilt-free betting and free booze, Pavelo highly doubted this would be an enjoyable day. The Rebel pilot was not here to enjoy the race and have a good time. Instead, Pavelo was here to compete.
As Pavelo and his best friend Rodrigo struggled to walk through the growing crowd in front of the raceway entrance, Pavelo looked anxiously behind himself, his gaze catching that of Rebellion soldier Connor Strickland. Strickland's presence only served to remind Pavelo of the gravity of the situation. Pavelo was not racing for himself, he was racing to cause a distraction. A distraction that would allow Strickland and his team to steal the 500 million credits present in the Costa Nostra's vault.
"Remember", it was Rodrigo's voice whispering in Pavelo's ear, "You winning is highly unlikely, so if you do, everyone who lost money because of it will riot. If you do not win, make a mess at the finish line. Either one causes enough of a distraction for the big boys to take the vault".
Pavelo nodded, he knew the plan, for he had designed it. As the pair approached the security checkpoint, Rodrigo held up two identification tags. One indicated that Pavelo was a racer, the other designated Rodrigo as Pavelos crew. Their podracer was already inside, and had been equipped with an emergency ejection seat if needed.
Meanwhile, Strickland and five other Rebel soldiers remained outside the venue. While the weapons and explosoves they were carrying were concealed, they Rebels doubted their ability to sneak so much dangerous kit past the checkpoint. They would remain a part of the crowd outside until the actual heist took place.
