KASHYYYK

Drast sat in the cargo bay of whatever ship Max had snagged the trio for their trip. It was him, Max, and his co-Padawan Felix. It wasn't just them, whole groups of teachers and Padawans were being deployed to the planet to aid their longtime allies. So now it just came down to how well they stacked up against their peers. He sat against a small crate humming to himself as he sat there, gazing at his datapad, earbuds in. He had spent the whole trip studying Shryiwook to better communicate with the natives. Unfortunately for Drast, that meant he was listening to Skippy the Jedi Robot, who he hated, with a passion. That said, Skippy did have something good: SkippyBop. It was Order Approved songs from across the galaxy sung by Padawans.. Although, come to think of it, he'd never seen any of those Padawans around. From any outsider, it would appear that he was just growling and roaring, not following any verbal instruction.

"Grruuur-raa-oooouuurrr." he would say, thinking he had it covered. "There we go, that's definitely 'how do you do'."

The datapad and Skippy would translate his attempt. "What the mouth do? Wrong. Please try again."

Drast cursed as he tossed the pad to the side of him. "Oh that will go over swimmingly with the Wookies. One way ticket to rip-town. Ugghhhh." The PA would chime on the ship. They had arrived at Kashyyyk, home of the Wookies. "Well.. Time to go see where we are landing."

Felix and Drastus were odd pair, they were very different in both origins and demeanour but both of them could learn from the other each. But today they would be doing something both didn’t really have experience calming tensions between Wookies and Trandoshans.

They had assigned with master Tionson, he had only ‘met’ the master once during his misadventure on Dathomir, Indy didn’t seem to happy with him at that particular point in time with him choosing to drink the spooky juice. This mission certainly would be interesting.

"please don’t tell me that was you practising your Shyriiwook?" he spoke to Drast as he met him in the hall "we don’t something bad happen because of misspoken a word or sentence."

Trandoshans turning away from the slave trade was something that Max knew something about. He had, after all, spearheaded efforts to make the gradual shift in attitudes actually happen, by playing into their own societal cues and playing them better than his opposition. Sure, some of that meant he had to be better in a fight but some of it just meant being able to come up with solutions that could benefit everyone.

Max brought the ship in to land at the landing pad for the local refugee town that had sprung up. The reports from the planet had mentioned that young Trandoshans and Wookiees were not getting along and that was causing tensions to rise.

As it would.

"Buddy, keep an eye on the ship for me, would you?"
he instructed the droid before stepping out into the cargo hold, "Most wookies understand Basic guys - don't worry about being understood."

He stepped down the ramp onto the landing pad.

"Pop quiz kids - what has happened in resent years that means the Trandoshan parents are here as traders who don't trade in Wookie fur?"

Drast would laugh at Felix's remark, almost stepping into him as he exited the cargo hold. "What? Me? Not at all. Well, yeah, didn't go too good." he said with a smirk. He normally had a very poor relationship with the more "traditional" Padawans at the Temple, but so far, Felix seemed different. He was respectful about seeing both sides and with it, realizing that they had equal amounts to both share and learn from each other. "Oh yeah, I can just see me now, getting ripped in half by no fewer than three Wookies at once. Not because they need three, but because it would be like a game to them."

Then came Max, with the obvious answer from downtown. "Well.. yeah, I guess it's just a respect thing.. Like I respect them enough to attempt to speak to them in a way most comfortable to them." he'd say with a shrug. "Translators are easy, figured the effort would mean more."

As he followed down the ramp, he'd scratch his chin. "Honestly, don't know much about this sector. Just that there is a deep seated hatred here that is starting to mend and we are here to hopefully seal the rift."

He had a point about the respect part but Max was of the opinion that people tended to enjoy it more when they weren’t having to listen to their own language being butchered. Not that he had much room to talk – he could understand the native tongue of the Wookies but he couldn’t speak it to save his life. Apparently his natural Tion Cluster accent made his growls roll on the Ls rather than the Rs so he sounded like he was trying to mock Wookies with speech impediments.

That had been no fun at all to discover so he hoped Drast did better than him.

“Good idea, Drast.”
He told the Padawan with a grin, “Just hope your accent doesn’t mess with the growls like mine does.”

No need to explain to the Padawan that the reason he didn’t speak the language was because of the embarrassing mix up with his accent. Still, they were heading into the small town and already he could feel the tension in the air. Nothing to do with the Force either, just a palpable animosity between peoples.

“What happened to help push the Trandoshans away from hunting Wookies in recent years… was me.”
He admitted to Drast with a small shrug, “Couple years back I gave them viable alternatives to earn points with the Scorekeeper and fought their champions in combat to force a ban on Wookie hunting. Along with the alternatives? Well quite a few of them enjoy hunting things that aren’t Wookies at this point.”

He eyed both Drast and Felix for a moment.

“Alright – I’m observing you two. Ask me questions and I’ll tell you what I know. Ask me for advice and I’ll give it. But we follow your directions.”
He smiled wider, “You’ve got this, guys. Drast – remember what you learned on Ryloth. Felix – step lively, kid. The Force is with you – so let’s go.”

Drast was a jokester and didn't seem to take himself too seriously, Felix liked that since some jedi seemingly had sticks up their butts.

Felix didn't know the reason why the Trandoshans weren't hunting the wookies anymore, presumably, something did change, maybe sort of change of leadership maybe? he honestly couldn't guess. Max's answer surprised Felix, he fought Trandoshans? some fiercest hunter in the galaxy and came out alive, he was a bit in awe.

"You really fought Trandoshans one on one, by yourself?" he asked max, not quite full believing it. but max moved on to the mission, so too Felix would. "understand master Tionson and thank you"

Felix would turn to Drast so they could start discussing a plan or at least the outline of one. "so i guess we should go talk to the leader of each group to get both sides of their story before we convene to discuss a comprises, master Tionson do you know who the leaders are? "

When Master Tionson agreed with his attempt, he could feel his pride swell, just a bit. Master Sati would hopefully be proud of all the work he had been up to. He would even laugh at Max's bit on the access. "Oh trust me, Master. It is going to be a slow process. I just botched 'How do you do?'. Ya don't want to know what I said."

Max's confession about his role in the stop in violence would stop Drast in his tracks. Not that he couldn't believe it, but moreso that it was just amazing. A single Jedi could do a lot of good. And he was sure much of the galaxy had no idea. He'd seen Max do some crazy things in his travels with the Master so to add another to the tally wasn't shocking at this point. "Hopefully, we can use that to our advantage. Use your presence to smooth things over."

Felix would follow Max's lead and cut straight to the point, perfect. "Great idea, Felix. Talk to both leaders, then speak to both sides biggest instigators. Get an idea of what's provoking each side and then meet in the middle. And hopefully by the end of this, we'll have stabilized this fragile peace."

He could practically feel the way both Padawans reacted to his admission about his efforts with the Trandoshans. Laughing a little bit, he nodded a bit and gave Felix a fond pat on the back, doing the same with a hand on Drast’s shoulder as well.

“I did – I fought a champion while Indy did the same to the side of me. Had a lot of help proving their were other valid targets from other Jedi as well, of course, but Indy and I were rather public in the ending of the discussion.”
He admitted with a grin, “Not the first time I’ve fought someone in a public arena and probably not the last either. The life of a Jedi will have you find yourself in scenarios that usually seem out of character even for characters in a holonet drama.”

Max shook his head a little bit and ‘poked’ Felix in the middle of the forehead with a very low-powered Force Push.

“No can do, Felix. Me being around to review your progress will open doors but I’m not here to give you or Drast any answers; you need to find the leaders yourselves.”
He told them with a shake of his head, “For the most part? Pretend I’m not here. I’m here to give advice if you really need it or get you out of bad spots but really?”

He made a gesture around them.

“This whole thing? It’s all you so you gotta act like it guys. So how you gonna find the bosses?”

Felix was not amused as his head rocked back slightly from the tiny force push on his head, he wasn’t even going to give them simple directions as a hint? Uggh. Fine we’ll find them ourselves

Felix turned his head back to Drastus again, he added a few editions to the outline now it seemed much more like a plan
"yeah that sounds good, I guess we should go find the leaders then. I think we should go find the Wookie chieftain first, it is his town, it would be rude not to visit him first" it seemed like decent logic to him, this was the Wookiee's homeworld and showing them respect might go along way.

coming across the first Wookie they met Felix would ask out to them "Excuse me, do you know where we can find your chieftain? we're the Jedi that have been asked here"

The Wookie replied with a bunch of growls and howls and pointed in a direction, Felix didn't understand the language let alone speak it so he turned his head turn to the other two hoping for a translation.

"Oh yeah, Max, no worries. Felix and I? We got this." He'd throw an arm around Felix's shoulder as he spoke about finding the chieftain. Drast would give Max an 'I told ya' look, just to reaffirm how awesome their plan was. And when Felix began to walk towards the village, he gave his friend a pat on the back. "Let's go knock em dead!"

Luckily for them, they found a Wookie that looked particularly helpful. And when he started speaking his language, Drast would start to nod his head in agreement. "Oh yeah, right. Okay. So uhh.. Gryywwus.." he said slowly before looking at the Wookie for acknowledgement on using the correct name. "Sounded like he said something about the Chieftain is in the main hall." luckily, he wasn't wrong. And by miracles that only Skippy the Jedi Robot could make happen, the next part would be right as well.

Drastus would growl and roar in Shryyiwook, this time not quite diving in, but saying things slowly. A grin would form on the Wookies face as it appeared Drastus thanked him correctly. He would then pat both Felix and Drastus on the head, gently, which was still a little rough, but it was ultimately friendly. Offering Max a respectful bow of the head, Gryywwus would head off about his task.

Unfortunately, Drastus absolutely missed the point. So now, he was just looking around for what looked like a main or a great hall. After a quick looksie, he smirked at Felix and Max, brushing some pretend dirt off of his shoulder. "Yeah.. I got it right. Told him 'thanks and called him 'Big Brother'."

Max knew that Felix wasn't exactly happy that he wasn't going to be giving them hints and tips but that was just tough shrak. Felix and Drastus both were beginning to reach for the rank of Knight and if they wanted to earn it they needed to be ready to operate responsibly on their own. Being a Padawan was a time for learning but being a Knight was about applying what they had learned on demand even as they continued with their studies. Simple activities like finding out who to actually question? That was something a Knight did on a daily basis.

Going to see the local chieftain first was a logical idea and he gave Drastus a wink when Felix turned away to get started. The kid's confidence certainly wasn't lacking and Max had every reason to believe that they did, in fact, have this all wrapped up.

Though he wasn't there to provide hints, he felt comfortable in nodding to confirm that Drastus' translation was correct. His own understanding of the local language was pretty good but, well, he was also right before when he said that the Tion Cluster accent really messed up the growls for actually speaking the language. So instead he was happy to follow along confirming what Drastus was able to figure out. Usually in the field a Knight would have something to help with translation.

Max bowed his head to the Wookie and smirked in amusement.

"Alright 'Little Claw'."
he teased Drastus before nodding to a larger building up ahead, "Lead the way."

felix scrunched his face as the Wookie ruffled his hair, Felix was in no way short with him standing tall above most other near humans so it was a bit demeaning but the information was now translated and that all that mattered.

He proceeded in the direction the Wookie had pointed them to, the large hall. Once again he led the way into the hall which housed a large open chamber with a throne in which a wookie sat, the chief, he seemed to be listening to a dispute brought to him by two wookies, Felix would stop at a bit of distance behind the two patiently waiting for those in front to finish up.

"can you hear what they're talking?" he whispered to Draastus, hoping he could enlighten him.
