It is believed that in Nal Hutta or one of its moons was born a man, of Epicanthix and Human parents, with the name Kesyk. His parents were, presumably, too engaged in certain activities to pay attention to a growing child and so, like so many in this system, the boy raised himself. Honest work is not easy to find in Hutt lands, especially for children, but Credits are a requirement for survival. And so, any idealism left in this boy was quickly replaced by a pragmatic shell. Currency was obtained however possible and using every skill at his disposal. Whatever little was left, the young Kesyk would save to one day get out of this damned planet.

Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years. Finally, this boy, now a young man, had finally discovered something about himself that was worth something to someone. Something that might break the shackles that bound him to poverty and miserableness. During the far too many days he'd spent starved, hiding from irate restaurant owners who spread pictures of his face around, dubbing him a food thief, something needed to be done to jog the mind. And the young Kesyk had caught some children playing, pretending to be magical beings who could move objects from a distance. 'The Force', they called it. So, on these off-days of his, the young boy would attempt to will the dusty old crap that surrounded the makeshift dwelling he'd cobbled together into motion with his mind. A useless venture, common sense would dictate. But for a pre-teen who couldn't even read, common sense was severely lacking. And so he tried, and he tried, and he tried. With no technique, no vague idea, nothing but sheer force of will. And one day, the boy succeeded.

Ecstatic and craving a family and guidance, the young Kesyk ran to the only authority figure in his life. The middle-aged man that paid him pennies on the dollar for the goods he stole. A man who told the child he was far too old to join the Jedi Ranks. A harsh lesson, but a well learnt one. Kesyk had finally realised that survival wasn’t enough. He needed to thrive.

Sacrificing most of the few savings he had, the now teenager found himself a tutor who'd teach him how to read, how to write and, most importantly, how to speak. This tutor of his was a self-entitled renowned scam-artist, who wanted a second pair of hands when he went out to grift. By age seventeen, Kesyk had studied the craft and made himself a man. Malakai Kesyk became his name, the name he'd chosen. It sounded strong and authoritative, with just enough of a hint of mysteriousness: Perfect to sell his story. These days you see, Malakai focused on two things: Telling fortunes, and robbing houses.

Many-a times, people would look to him in awe of his powers of divination when he told them their house would be robbed, and it was. His (minimal) telekinetic ability and keen eyes proved just what he'd needed in order to pose as one of the Jedi he'd been denied entry to.

At long, long last, things were looking up for the man. He'd found himself a good woman of Hapan descent, made good money and even had a son: Mar. This once miserable child now stood tall. Alas, stealing is not unlike gambling in that, the more you win, the bolder you get. And all it takes is one misstep to bring the whole thing crashing down... He'd stolen from a Sith. One who didn't care for him or his parlour tricks, and one who wanted retribution, and would stop at very little to get it.

And so, the time for bravado was over. This was run, or die. And run he did... or try, at least. Because no 2-bit criminal could ever hope to face real power and not be squashed. He needed help, and no godforsaken acquaintance of his would even consider stepping between a Sith and his target for someone like Malakai Kesyk. His only chance of survival lied with the very people he despised most. The ones who'd snubbed him when he was young, who painted themselves as keepers of Justice and yet, refused to lift him from the Hell he was born to: The Jedi.

Not in the business of helping thieves continue to steal, the Knights presented the conman with an offer: They would protect him from this irate Sith, but would do so by placing him in Prison where he’d do penance for the crimes he'd committed over the years and stand a chance at rehabilitation. Desperate, the now mess of a man accepted, leaving behind a son and wife in the care of his captors.

Malakai Kesyk would meet his maker five years later, killed while trying to flee from the very Prison he'd delivered himself into. His son, Mar, Force-Sensitive like his father but - unlike Malakai - was of suitable age to begin his training. Too young to remember his family history, with time, the boy would learn to master his gifts and raise the banner of Peace and Justice alongside the truest warriors in the Galaxy: The Jedi Knights.

Mar Kesyk was born in Nar Shaddaa. As with most Jedi however, his home has never been with anyone other than his fellow Knights. Where he came from, who he would've been… irrelevant. He is a Jedi, first and foremost. Never to be nor crave anything other than spreading Peace and Justice throughout the Galaxy under the guiding light of the Jedi Code.

The man’s early life was not unlike that of any other in his place. The training was relentless, but rewarding. Outspoken, strong-willed and with an Epicanthix inheritance that awarded him a tall, powerful stature and innate resistance to mind tricks, his stay of many years in the Jedi Temple was successful, but not eyebrow-raising. Still, the boy was chosen by Yafan Hotuihk, a Miraluka Knight, who worked tirelessly to teach him the ways of the Force and curb Mar's impulsive behaviour. For the most part, she succeeded. But perhaps the greatest gift the blind Jedi offered her young Initiate was the ability to see beyond the obvious. This skill was no more Force-Assisted than the act of breathing, but soon became one of the most valuable notches on his belt.

The boy became a teen, and life wasn't too far from what was expected of a Jedi-in-training. Some days were littered with bumps, bruises and hormone-induced tantrums while in others the teen's ability to centre himself and his genuine wish to fight for Peace shone particularly bright. Alas however, on a fateful trip to Nal Hutta, when a seemingly senile store owner admonished Mar - who had done nothing - and demanded that he return what he'd stolen led into a misunderstanding that would end with the young Initiate discovering his biological roots.

Deeply ashamed of where he'd come from and what that said of who he'd become, Kesyk had his very first serious encounter with the Dark Side of the Force, crystallised in the moment when he found a picture of his father and in it, saw a face that mirrored his own.

Under the patient, watchful eye of his mentor, the teen returned to his former self, having learned an important lesson about life and the Dark Side in the process: be careful what you wish for. Mar had, like most Initiate, wondered about his Origin, and these thoughts were precisely the ones that made the answers he’d finally gotten difficult to bear.

Although the issue was largely well resolved, a part of the young man resented his appearance and, as such, on the day he became a Knight of the Jedi Order, Mar Kesyk chose to cover his face with a helmet not unlike the one his mentor wore, as a reminder that he need not be defined by his father, or his mistakes.

With his vows as a Jedi renewed, and a chip on his shoulder, Mar Kesyk's path is one of many before him: To pursue the Light Side and grow in ability, to better serve the Galaxy and the Order. A great deal of obstacles stand in his way, from an entire Empire of those who'd see him harm, to himself and the possibility of straying from his path, one only those purest of heart can hope to stand a chance in.
  • Born into the Jedi family, Mar Kesyk looks as one might expect: A tall frame, with broad shoulders and a thin waist, a coat of toned but lean muscles with barely any body fat and a strong jawline. Now a fully-grown man, his boyish features have all but disappeared, leaving behind a face of sharp contours and the makings of what will one day be wrinkles, despite the taut skin of youth. Above his blue eyes is a full head of blond hair that is some days meticulously combed and others mildly dishevelled.

The spitting image of his father - something he's not particularly fond of - this Jedi inherited a kind face, that some might find appealing: the face Malakai used to lull his targets into a sense of false security; the face of a scam artist. Despite lacking his father's training, Mar sports the conman’s keen eyes, capable of dissecting people and their wants, as well as a calm but authoritative baritone that on a first impression can seemingly defuse any situation. Now somewhat aware of his roots, the man struggles with these inheritances, believing them to be a criminal’s gifts and therefore deceitful and morally wrong, but at the same time is thankful he possesses them for it helps to bridge the gap between the strict, cold, relentlessly rational Jedi teachings and the common man, who is not bound by or understanding of the Order’s mindset.

When this and many paradoxes like it are put together, you get a polite, affable individual, with a cold, methodical and even relentlessly pragmatic take on life, all of which directly bleeds through to the way he carries himself. Having had manners literally beat into him in the Jedi Temple, his back is straight and his posture spotless, and there is an abstruse sense of grace, elegance and poise to his every movement. Upright, but not too rigid, welcoming but not weak, pragmatic to a point of near-callousness but never forgetful of the idealism that makes a Jedi, the list goes on.

A good Jedi, Mar mostly dresses in neutral colours, generally avoiding flashy apparel, save for the helmet he wears - a present from the (blind) Knight who trained him - and the very obvious Jedi robes which, though intended to be plain and low-key generally makes members of the Order stick out like a sore thumb.

Now finally his own man, outside of the constant supervision of his mentor or his superiors, Kesyk is, like most Jedi, beginning to stray from the extreme orthodoxy taught in the Temples and finding his own middle-ground in the real world. As such, being of the belief that maintaining an iron-clad wall between himself and everything remotely close to temptation will only lead to such things as frustration and rebellion which, in turn lead to the Dark Side, the man has finally started to pay attention, albeit minimal, to such things as appearance, fashion and a hint of luxury.
  • Mar Kesyk is a man of many sides. The lofty, conservative Jedi teachings hovering above him pull him upwards towards the proverbial firmament - the realm of the Force - while the blood of thieves and conmen pulsing through his veins pushes down towards the underworld and the dregs of society. Unfortunately, Man cannot exist in higher, or in lower realms: Life requires people to keep both feet firmly planted on solid ground. To a perceptive Jedi like Kesyk, this will prove one of life's greatest obstacles: Accepting both the unfeeling, calculating, rational Jedi within as well as the conman's son, filled with flaws, cravings and shortcomings, all the while retaining the traits that make him Human, as opposed to an emotionless machine, or a slave to temptation. Until the day these facets can coexist, Kesyk remains a heterogenous mixture of them.

This Jedi is impeccably polite and respectful, except when it's appropriate to be impolite, at which time his sharp tongue and interesting sense of humour tend to make themselves known. Though someone who will largely not act on or display emotion, Kesyk’s eyes often dart around him, latching on to the smallest and most minute details: a curious mind's attempts at taking in as much of the world around it as possible. This trait, when mixed with his streak of unfeeling logical thinking results in a constant, relentless rationalisation of just about every aspect of his life. The proverbial cogs behind his pupils seem to work tirelessly, grinding away at every situation in neigh-clinical reports aimed at breaking down how and why something happened the way that it did. This practiced ability grants the man an edge in figuring people out which has, at times, manifested itself in advantageous ways, but is not without its dangers. It relies heavily on placing oneself in someone else’s shoes which, despite coming from a place of reason, can negatively impact the man’s control over his emotions.

Though honour-bound and in constant pursuit of the Order’s idealised notion of the perfect, true Jedi, Mar has developed surprising levels of self-awareness as well as a pragmatic outlook on life. For a man of strong, fixed values, he does not take himself too seriously, which makes him considerably kinder than the stereotypical Jedi Knights of mental rigidity verging on intolerance.
  • Immersed from a young age in an environment that promotes personal growth, Mar Kesyk is someone who has spent the entirety of his life working tirelessly to not only master and mature his Jedi abilities, but also placed a great deal of effort into developing a wide variety of interests.

An avid reader with a relentlessly curious mind, the man relishes in broadening his horizons, literary and otherwise, by cultivating his bank of knowledge. A lifetime of reading has gifted the man the ability to freely summon the words of his favourite writers, and use them to suit any occasion. This particular skill has become his hallmark in the realm of Diplomacy and thanks to it, despite his lack of practice in the area, the man is making considerable progress.

Years of serving as the resident driver in his Master-Student duo with Yafan Hotuihk, his Miraluka mentor, Kesyk has developed a love of flying, from speeders to ships and revels in pushing his limits as a Pilot and improving his skills in the art.

Having spent most of his life undergoing Jedi Training, Mar is mainly a close quarters Force-wielder type-combatant and his talent in the Jedi art of war lies in two major areas:

Gifted with a tall frame and powerful physique and good reflexes, balance and coordination, abilities honed by years of training, the man is an impressive athlete, and has been for most of his life. Taking advantage of his natural disposition, Kesyk’s primary focus in combat lies in the usage of the Force to enhance his physical traits and allow himself to display superhuman feats and, armed with his single lightsaber, the Jedi will face his opponents relying primarily on his swordsmanship. Despite being best versed in both styles of Form V, his favoured style of lightsaber combat, Kesyk has some training in Form III, primarily to further clinch his defence and reign in Shien and Djem So’s aggression, and conserve a stamina that is not overflowing.

The Jedi possesses also negligible training in Form VI, his mentor’s primary form, but has professed to have no real intention of pursuing it further at this point in time. The man chose to learn it primarily to gain a deeper understanding of how to better blend Soresu into his particular style, as well as integrate the usage of Telekinesis and other Force abilities during combat.

Despite being of the belief that the best attack comes from a good defence, the man’s primary weapon is his wit and is known for his ability to confidently dodge and block relentless assaults while keeping a levelled head, before capitalising on his ability to spot and punish weaknesses and mistakes in the battlefield, something further emphasised by his usage of Tràkata, a style Mar is far from comfortable with, but has a strong desire to improve in.

His Epicanthix heritage makes him naturally resistant to mind afflicting techniques, something that peaked the curiosity of the boy’s masters growing up and, as a result, his own. Despite not being as talented in this area as he is in the usage of lightsabers, it, together with the use of Animal Bond, makes up Mar’s second great school of combat, and are abilities he will use often, though under strict moral limitations.

A lack of ranged capabilities led the Jedi to know his way around a blaster, and ranged weaponry is now something that can be found on him at all times.

Aside from the Core Powers that have been trained to exhaustion, Kesyk has displayed Pyrokinetic and Telepathic abilities in the past, though both remain largely untrained.

The man’s greatest shortcoming is likely his lack of experience and the Wisdom only it can bring not simply to himself as an individual but as a leader as well, something he could one day be, should the future will it.

I really like this character. Very down to earth, very... believable. Relatable, even. Not something a lot of people can achieve, even less when you put it in a Star Wars universe.

One thing I will note though as you have repulsor boots listed on your profile is that you should (to avoid any complications) probably not use them in any capacity when it comes to PvP interactions - especially in conjunction with your armor as that's directly against the rules. They should be fine as a flavor piece or whatnot, but I'd be mindful.

All in all though, great character! I'm glad to see you back kicking around and most of all joining the best team. ;)

About the whole boots thing: I know me, I'm going to forget them and/or this conversation, so if you wouldn't mind, it'd be easier if I just cut them altogether (already have).

All in all though, great character! I'm glad to see you back kicking around and most of all joining the best team. ;)
Glad to see you enjoyed the character! Was pretty on the fence about it. Writing Jedi is weird to me. Can never quite find decent ways to go around the whole stereotypical backstories where your guy's either got a hero's rise/is born a saint and was just plain meant to be supa-jebus healing the lepers, or he's got some emo-batman-sad-parents-sad-lyf one (which is the one I went with. Hoo-ray for unoriginality, etc.). Long story short, this dude was my gateway drug into Jedi-land. So I'm a little relieved it panned out.

Also, happy to be remembered. It really is heart-warming considering I feel like I was around for all of 5 minutes before I skipped town.

Finally, do let me know if you want to get some threads going! I've got no real clue about what to do with this guy just yet, so I'm up for pretty much anything.

PS: Spotted Vecna 2.0 a couple of days ago. Happy to see the old furball's as cool as ever.

Welcome to the cool kids table.
Thanks, bossman! Happy to be here.

If you feel like doing some argh-pee with a/the new kid, give me a ring.
