Crix hadn't stuck around to see what kind of damage had been done by the explosion at the apartment because he'd been busy running to the HQ, but now that he was able to get a look at it? The bloody doors had been blown clean off and the main living area looked, if the pun could be pardoned, like a bomb had gone off. Half of it was because of the explosion and half of it was because, if he was honest with himself, he hadn't really cleaned the place up properly while his mom had been on a mission. As soon as he knew she was on her way home he'd have cleaned it all up in a jiffy, honest!

But now it didn't really matter did it? The place looked like it had been ransacked as well - the screens were all showing white like their power supplies and memory drives had been messed with. Anyone looking for anything important would have been very disappointed since the Aran family believed in regular memory wipes for a reason.

Stepping through the debris, he kicked a few pieces this way and that as he just took it all in.

Pushing through the apartment he arrived at the beads - the bloody beads that were part of the karking lease so he couldn't just pull them down and burn them - that marked the entrance to his room. His mom's room had the proper door and lock and he wouldn't have had it any other way. He REALLY didn't want to know what he would have heard/seen if it didn't lock.

9062cabfe1537b4efc8e961d874059ad.jpg

His room looked... mostly untouched.

The chaos of the room was almost entirely down to him and his laziness when it came to tidying up after himself. Crix was glad his mom wasn't home to see what kind of a shite tip he'd left his room in but he would just blame whoever had come to loot after the explosion. Why they'd have left dirty plates all around the room was anyone's guess, obviously.

Wandering through the room, he collected a few things. Mostly just knickknacks, some datapads that held pictures of him and his mom... oh and the blaster rifle that he had hidden under one of the false bottoms of a drawer. His mom had wanted to make sure that there was a blaster with some power to it in every room so he was taking this one with him.

She'd probably be okay with it.

Probably.

Penny was scared as hell. Of course she'd seen what'd happened at Ranger HQ. There'd been nothing else on the feeds for hours, just watching smoke and flame rise on the screen as her stomach twisted in knots. Hearing the reporter constantly revise how many they though had been killed in there.

Dad.

She didn't know. She had no idea where her Dad was working that day. He was based out of Ranger HQ, but he was often off-world, on some hot-shot drug bust or investigating some Syndicate stuff closer to the Mid-Rim. There was a good chance that he'd been out somewhere, blissfully absorbed in his work. But...

He might've been in that.

She'd stood, ashen-faced, in the streets as what seemed like the whole planet rushed to stare and scream. Hoping that she'd find out more just by standing there and watching it burn. But she'd also seen him. Crix. Some guy she knew from school. He ran with a completely different crowd (the cool crowd) but she knew his mom was some kind of big shot Ranger. Like, her dad's boss. Lost, without any other thought of what to do, she followed him as he headed away from Ranger HQ.

Following him up to the apartment had been scary, but the lessons her Dad had taught her still lingered. She hadn't trailed anyone like this since she was 12. Careful to not draw suspicion, she waited until he'd entered his apartment and she'd followed, intending to knock on the door. That'll be fun. Hi, I just followed you from an explosion and... and...

She stared through the open door at the mess that'd been made of the place. Completely trashed beyond belief. Way more than even thee most irresponsible teenager could manage. Her eyes went wide, taking it all in as she peered inside. Was he okay? Was he hurt? Curiosity (and nosiness) overwhelmed her as she stepped inside, looking around.

"Hello?" she called out, peeking a little further, just past some beads when she saw... blaster! Blaster rifle! She raised her hands instantly.

"Wait! Don't shoot!" she squealed.

There was a girl in his room.

There was a girl in his room and she had walked in on him messing with his blaster rifle.

Thank the Force his mom wasn't here - let alone some of his other friends! Willa and Enby would have had a field day with this and he knew it, heat racing to his cheeks even as the training he'd been given had actually kicked in. So it was a flustered, blushing, teenage boy who raised the blaster rifle up and aimed it at the girl.

He held her in his sight for a moment, shaking slightly.

"Stay back! Stay back or I'll...!"
he trailed out, tilting his head away from looking down the sights of the blaster rifle to just stare at her for a long moment, "Wait. Wait we go to school together right?"

The blaster rifle lowered slowly.

"I have the same class for Mid Rim Colonial history, right?"
he blinked a few times before looking around, suddenly remembering that they were in his messy, ransacked, bedroom in the partially destroyed apartment he shared with his mom, "What are you even doing here, Renny!"

... the name didn't sound right.

But in his defense they went to school together, he hadn't exactly spent a lot of time with her alone. Their social circles were a little bit different after all. Better than calling her "Hey You" or whatever.

Don't shoot don't shoot don't shoot don't shoot

As Crix lowered the blaster, Penny followed with her hands. Still stood shaking, mouth hanging slightly open. He pointed a blaster right at me! He pointed an actual ass blaster rifle right at me!

"P... P... Penny!" she corrected, eyes flicking from Crix to the blaster, again and again. "Why do you even have that?" The moment had overwhelmed her mind for a few seconds, before everything clicked back into place, like a computer system rebooting.

"The Ranger HQ," she said quickly, her mind racing as she babbled it all out, "I saw you there and I knew your mom is like some... famous super Ranger boss and it's all a mess and my Dad might've been in there and... and... and you're holding a blaster rifle!" She waved towards it like it wasn't already completely obvious.

"Your mom wasn't in that, was she?"
Penny asked, horror washing over her.

Of course the teenager's family had to move back to Coruscant the same week as the Sector Ranger's HQ gets blown up. Riyocho was wearing his mask to make sure he wasn't breathing in any dangerous contaminants. The zoom feature was great for site seeing which was what the teenager had been doing up until then. His parents had gone to the senate building and he knew they would be spending the whole day there.

When the Ranger HQ got hit there wasn't much Riyocho could do. His parents called him pretty soon after and told him to head head home. "Uh, yeah, it got hit in some of the blast mom. It doesn't look dangerous just...maybe look into getting a hotel room incase it rains or something. Talk to you later." He pocketed the comlink afterwards and headed into the building.

Walking down the hall to get to his family's apartment he passed by an open door. The voices from inside seemed adgitated enough that the young man started listening in on it. Maybe it was his nosy nature but this was also technically one of his neighbors. Maybe they had seen something. Maybe they had lost somebody.

Opening the door to his family's apartment he thought he heard mention of a blaster rifle. But the sight before him wasn't anything to ignore. There was a mess of items and debris. At least some of the stuff had yet to be unpacked from the move. Sighing, he managed to find the remote to the entertainment system and began playing
some music to try and clean up. The beeping of the volume was loud enough to play noticeably by any neighbors.

Okay so her actual name was Penny - he remembered that, he was fine with that, but what he was still trying to get his head around was slightly less abstract than that. It was something so incredibly simple that even her asking the perfectly valid question about why he had the blaster rifle paled in comparison.

"Never mind why I have a rifle - this is my apartment!"
he blinked a few times, "What are you doing in my apartment? In my room?"

This was not how he saw today going.

When she explained a little bit further he lowered the blaster ever so slightly more as she did so. He recalled his mom knew her dad from one of the few parent-teacher nights his mom had actually been able to attend. Taking a deep breath, he shook his head.

"No she... no she wasn't there."

But he didn't even know that until he had gotten there. And with their apartment having been hit as well, he felt justified in grabbing the blaster rifle - a decision that he felt more comfortable about when he heard music from the neighboring apartment pick up.

His grip on the rifle tightened slightly.

"Did you see anyone when you came here?"
he asked her, trying to remain calm but probably failing, "Someone blew up my front door and living room, Penny, did you see anyone in the halls?"

He didn't think any of his neighbors would have just randomly put music on but he needed to check it out. Stepping cautiously through his apartment he looked both ways down the corridor before moving down to the next apartment. Coughing a little bit, he knocked by the door.

"Mr and Mrs Drew, that you in there?"

Penny's hands fell back to her side as Crix lowered the rifle. Breathing a little more calmly now she didn't feel like a target at a shooting range. Still, his sudden frantic attitude was super unnerving... as if anything about today felt super natural at all.

"No! Nobody! It's super empty, like... dead," she started to ramble, but instantly regretted her choice of words. "I... I mean the street outside is full of people but nobody came in here, I'm sure of it!" She'd checked, she was sure. Like she was about to let someone just tail her like that. Her dad'd kill her for being so sloppy.

Dad...

She was torn out of her melancholy and fear by the heavy, thudding sound of music coming from the apartment next door. She pulled her face at it, following Crix out into the corridor. Her eyes scanned around the empty hallway as Crix moved to the next door down. Who listens to this kind of migrane-inducing trash?! she wondered, cowering slightly behind Crix.

"Mr and Mrs Drew have weird tastes in music," she whispered, clearly expecting someone different to answer the door. Some punk, or thug... or a squad of explosives-toting mercenaries. "I don't know about this."

The smooth, biting rumble of a tuned to hell airspeeder cut through the air as Arcene twisted and turned through the Coruscant skylanes. Hannibal hadn't been on planet during the attack on the Ranger station much to his infinite chagrin, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to get to work once he got there. He'd heard some apartments nearby were also targeted and, aside from his curiosity as to why the station and a seemingly random apartment block were targeted, something felt off about the location. He had a vague indication from some borrowed memories about why it could be problematic, even if he wasn't really supposed to know about the specific spot. Oh well, that's for later.

The chromium gleam of Arcene reflected the gleam of the night-time lights as it came in to land. The apartment in question was clearly blown out, though frankly he'd expected a more all-or-nothing approach to whatever bomb had been used. Hannibal touched down in an open area near the end of the closest hallway, technically out of the way but also not technically a parking spot. Whatever.

The young Jedi stepped from inside the speeder wearing his common brightly coloured robes, along with his lightsaber and DG-29. He usually wore them on Coruscant these days unless he wanted to remain somehow anonymous. They were probably more well known than his face after the events at the Prison and subsequent media attention. Black boots clacked on the duracrete pathway down the hall, a freshly lit cigarra burning between his lips as he headed to the apartment. Hey, did that Zabrak look familiar?

An odd feeling rushed through him for a moment followed by memories from a funeral. Ah, he did look familiar. That was good. Also, not good. He was alive, but he was also here, which likely meant Hannibal's initial worries were at least partly correct. He also had some girl with him, and he couldn't help but notice the music playing from somewhere. What is today?

"Yo!" he shouted in greeting, casually waving his right hand and walking right on up to the shorty duo. There was a definite smell of burning, so he probably had the right area. He tilted his head to look at the open doorway behind the Zabrak, noting the debris. "That's not your place, is it? What's with the rifle?" he followed up, looking down at the weapon. "Huntin' rats?"

Suarn Rook had come to Coruscant for one reason. Credits. If there was any place for a gun toting freelancer like himself to make credits it was a city planet like this one. Well that and curiosity. He'd heard that the ecumenopolis was the center of the galaxy and he'd wanted to see it for himself.

So far he had mixed feelings about the planet. Crowded was an understatement. And it certainly wasn't short on action. He had taken a job with some of the denizens of the lower city, for what he considered to be a... substandard fee. He hadn't been too excited about being shortchanged, but someone had been bombing homes for what he could discern was no good reason. A military installation, sure. A spice den, why not. But homes? He felt someone was having some cowardly fun at the expense of lives and livelihoods. So he had taken the job.

This was before the Sector Ranger HQ had been hit, and another apartment at the same time. He was pretty sure the Ranger HQ bombing wasn't related to the lower city bombings, but he couldn't be sure about the apartment until he checked it out.

He arrived at the apartment a few hours after he saw it on the holonet, the small bombing overshadowed on the news by the Ranger HQ attack. He could see the damage from the outside, and thought flying right up into the apartment with his jetpack but reconsidered. Better to take the elevator. Jetpacking up into a crime scene might raise suspicions.

Luckily elevators were fast on Coruscant, which minimized the time spent listening to the awful elevator music. Stepping out of the elevator, a few things caught his attention. The smell of burnt building, the thumping of some strange electronica music coming from somewhere on the floor. A pair of teenagers in the hallway, one of them toting a blaster rifle, and an older man approaching the pair talking about rats.

His hand moved to hover close to his own blaster at his hip, the presence of the rifle making him nervous. "So. Which one of you is the bomber im looking for." His eyes flicking between the three people in the hallway behind his helmet. Nothing about this situation felt right to Suarn.

Very poor choice of words aside, hearing that the streets had been empty was both reassuring and, obviously, not. Because if the streets had been cleared of people when she had come following him then who the hell was in his neighbor's apartment? It was probably just them doing the same as him and coming back for essentials.

Right?

Yeah, totally.

"They've got a son our age."
he told her honestly, "It's probably his music or something. I guess... I feel like we should probably get out of here."

There was a nagging feeling at the back of his neck that said getting out of dodge was a great idea but he couldn't quite place the why. He swallowed a little bit and stepped away from the apartment with the rifle still clutched in his hands.

Of course as soon as he turned round there was a brightly colour monk walking toward them.

Because only on this karking planet could weirdos like that run around looking like they lost a fight against a glitter machine. He narrowed his eyes, the rifle now firmly pointing at the man as he slowly moved to stand between the new guy and Penny.

"We were just leaving my place now."
he told the man, keeping his eyes on him as he backed away, "Come on Penny, let's head out. Get some caf. My treat."

There was something about the older man that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up and he wasn't sure if that was good or bad... so he opted for option C. Back way slowly, keep him in his sights and his finger by the trigger!

And then the elevator pinged and there was a freaking Mandalorian looking twitchy as hell. He stared between the two of them for a moment before sighing aggressively.

"I just wanted to grab some of my stuff from the apartment... why does this kind of shite keep happening to me?"

Riyocho was vibing the music. After the song built he even turned it up the bass a bit more. He began looking through some of the boxes yet to be unpacked. Cleaning some dust off of one he pulled out a flask he knew belonged to his dad. Unscrewing the top he took a wiff. "ooh" he said and blinked a little. It was whiskey of some kind. He tapped the flask as the music continued to play. But the tapping stopped and after a moment. Riyocho wasn't sure if he heard someone knocking on the door or not. Walking towards the front of the apartment he listened again through the music. The pantoran had a feeling there was someone, no, more than one, a few people.

Going up to the door he didn't bother looking outside. In his second nature he figured he may as well just answer if someone's there and look out into the hallway to see what was going on. Maybe there were cops coming back to check on something. But the young man had not expected to see the familiar worried expression of Crix, standing next to some familiar looking girl. To one side he saw a man that looked like like he was eyeing Crix's blaster rifle. Wait! Why does Crix have a blaster rifle? Is that a KARKING Mando? The WTF expression on Riyocho's face was obvious. The teenager craned his neck out further into the hallway but remaining in the doorway still with his hands pressed against either side of the doorframe, eyes looking for someone to explain what was going on.

Just what is happening right now? What is actually happening?

Creepy robe guy. Acting all casual. He had the exact face from her 10th Grade 'Strangers, Freaks and Dangers' safety presentation. He hand something strange hanging from his belt, along with his blaster. Something about him gave her chills. Something deep in her core, like a steady, ice-cold swirl in her stomach. She felt like she knew what he was...

Until the Mandalorian stepped out from the elevator. Penny's eyes were the size of a comm dish as he stepped out in his intimidating, all-covering armour. His distorted voice came out, threatening and accusing them of actually bombing the place. I'm like sixteen!!!! she wanted to scream.

"Yeah, caf sounds good now. We should go get some caf. Right now. Quickly. Please." The words that came out were drenched with worry and anxiety, not trusting any of this for a second. She took a step back, nearly reaching out to touch Crix... before deciding that'd be a bad idea.

The door opened and the Pantoran boy stood there, looking just as familiar as Crix had done. One of his friends? She looked over at him and blinked, before finding some words to blabber out.

"Aren't you in my Civics class?" she asked, sounding nonplussed before she rallied herself. "I mean, like, so we can compare notes? We were just going to do some homework and stuff, right Crix? We're just gonna head in..." she started to say, flashing a manic and petrified smile to the assorted hallway weirdos. Her cheeks started to burn bright red.

I am so screwed, I'm the worst liar in the Galaxy!

Hannibal was the sort to have proudly won that fight with the glitter machine, thank you. But that aside, this girl was a terrible liar. Just awful. Not even counting that Hannibal could feel she was lying clearly through the Force, she was actively turning red and her sentences were in disarray. 'Course they could be a mess normally, he didn't know her, but still. First thing's first, a twitchy dude in Mandalorian armour.

Hannibal turned to look at Sauren to give him an amused look that merged with his little grin. "D'you own a mirror, Sir Clanksalot? The only one here who looks like a bomber is you. Chill on the piece." he admonished lightheartedly and turned back to the Zabrak kid and the girl, both of whom were clearly alarmed by, uh... Well, everything. Understandable, all things considered. The kid had confirmed it was his house that had exploded, which meant this was definitely Trys' son, which meant he'd been through some shit in his few years. His apartment blew up and his instinct was to get a blaster of all things.

Hannibal's mother would approve, he was sure. It also just occurred to him kids weren't normally supposed to have rifles in the first place. Oops. Whatever, he was Trys' problem. Introductions were in order. "Relax. I'm Hannibal, I know your mother. I'm here to check why things are exploding and that you're not dead. Hannibal's bright green eyes moved to the apparent neighbor. "Yo. I'm guessin' you weren't here for the boom, then? Your speakers ain't good enough for that."

Oh but he wanted today to be over already.

He recognized the person who had wandered over as a Jedi at the same time he kind of, sort of, recognized his face. Staring at the man’s face for a minute, it took him a minute to realize why he didn’t really recognize him; if he was the person he was thinking about then he hadn’t aged in like, five years or something. Still, recognizing a face (kind of) didn’t mean much in the way of actually engaging with them.

Staring in silence for a moment or two he raised an eyebrow.

“Ain’t you supposed to be off babysitting Talak or something Jedi…” he rattled his brain for the man’s name for a minute, “Handsel?”

That sounded kind of right and that was good enough for him for now.

Especially since there was a Mando in the same corridor as him looking like he was ready for a war! Of course they technically were at war with the Sith and, well, Mandos looked like they were ready for war all the time. There might not be many in the core but there were enough of them that “this is the way” was kind of publicly known. So he just kind of stared at the helmet for a minute before he sighed a little bit, pointing to his apartment.

“That’s the one that got bombed – figure the rest were collateral damage.” He scowled a little bit, “Sith did it because of fecking course they did. Mom’s a ranger so guess they wanted to try taking a hit at her.”

He wasn’t going to be telling anyone here exactly who his mom was. Feck that. Might not have been interested in joining the Rangers himself but he picked up a few things just from listening to his mom gripe about some aspects of her job. He picked up some things by osmosis even if they weren’t actually in detail.

And the best way to keep a secret was to give someone a truth that they didn’t know wasn’t the whole truth.

Suarn watched the whole scene play out in front of him. His gut had been right. Just a couple of scared teenagers and one of those Jedi sorcerers. Suarn didn't know where the Jedi fit in but he seemed to know the kid. Relaxing a little, Suarn's hand eased away from the "piece".

"If I wanted someone dead, I wouldn't blow up their apartment like a coward" He grumbled back in response. And no, he didn't own a mirror. What would he need a mirror for.

Ignoring the Jedi for now, assuming he wasn't about to start throwing magic around and swinging his laser sword with kids between them, Suarn turned his attention to the zabrak who was staring at his helmet. He got that a lot. Mandalorians hadn't exactly been common place for... a long time.

"Sith?" Kid's mom was a ranger. Ranger HQ had gotten hit at roughly the same time. Made sense. Didn't help him much. Still it was strange that only the one apartment had gotten hit by the Sith. Must be personal. "You can learn a lot about someone by their enemies. You must have some mom."

Looking past the kid at the destruction, he could tell that the bombing was different than the ones he had been looking into too. This one was more professional. Bigger charge. The ones in the undercity had all been amateur hour. "You sweep for bugs? They might have rigged the place to let them know if someone came home. Might even be a hit squad on the way right now."

There it was - the swelling of pride in his chest when someone recognized that his mom was a badass who didn't take shite from anyone, including red-blade swinging Force Feckers. He did his best to not let how thrilled he was with that sentence actually show on his face though. If people realized just how much of a badass Ranger his mom was they would be able to connect the dots well enough to know who she was.

And that was a bad thing until he got to be half as badass so she could stop worrying about him like he was some little kid who needed her to kiss his scraped knees or whatever.

"She kicks enough arse to get by."
he answered instead, "Guess red-blades don't like it when someone ain't afraid of their budget-goth shite."

He blinked a few times.

"Sweep for bugs...? Dude I'm 16."
he grumbled, gesturing with his free hand, "I showed up for the emergency rifle and credits and to grab enough shite that was left to make a good go of it myself. Who even learns how to sweep for bugs when they're my age? Wait..."

Crix held up a finger and sighed, looking disappointed in himself.

"Don't answer that. Mando... of course you'd learn in your teens."

Because of course!

There was a nagging feeling at the base of his neck and it was getting worse. He didn't know it but it was the Force, telling him that there was danger approaching.

"Uhh..." He didn't know if the girl was being honest or trying to hint at some relation to avoid the other two guys in the hall. Riyocho was out of school already after being homeschooled. That hadn't stopped him from being in the same class a few years back as Crix and a few other kids. Whatever, too many forgettable faces in the galaxy

The young woman didn't wait though and before he knew it, the pantoran was stepping aside for her and Crix to get into his parent's appartment. If the Mando or the other guy followed, well they'd find the teenager standing his ground. "Yup. Guess there's nothing to really stick around to listen to then." He smiled a shit-eating grin. His hand waved a little bit as if to shoo both less armored guy off. He didn't seem that intimidating, just weird..

Who is this guy? or rather who does he think he is? Of course it was followed up by Crix answering it aloud. Jedi. The golden eyes of the teen glanced at the Mandalorian to see if the emotionless visor showed any sign of recognition or interest in this information. The Pantoran was not keen on experiencing a shootout outside his parent's apartment.

Hannibal chuckled at Crix's commentary and leaned his back casually against the wall opposite the doorway to the Pantoran's apartment. "Close enough. Babysittin' Talak is your mother's job, not mine," he corrected, a mischievous grin crossing his face. He chose not to comment on learning how to sweep bugs, considering he had been taught how to sweep for bugs as a kid. Having a career mercenary for a mother will do that.

"Yeah, she's some lady. Helm-lad has a point though. Y'should probably be hiding elsewhere, not with the neighbor," he pointed out through the open doorway the Pantoran was was standing sentinel in. A vague tingling ran down his spine, something he well recognized as the sense of not-quite-imminent danger. "'Cause they obviously know where ya live, and I doubt your bubblegum bodyguard is gonna discourage 'em."

From Hannibal's own experience, the Sith were nothing if not determined. Though they also seemed to run off when things weren't going to plan. He'd have to remember to ask Talak if they got classes on fleeing.

Crix scowled at the mention of the other Jedi. He didn't so much know who was sleeping with his mom as he was aware that someone was - he was a teenage boy so sex was always on his mind enough that he recognized the signs. Having the twit in the weird outfit playing coy just meant that he actually had a name for the guy his mom was sleeping with. He knew his mom was a person as well as being, well, his mom so he knew that she was entitled to have a love life.

At the same time... freaking gross! That was his mom and now he had the name of the dude who was sleeping with her? And he was a Jedi? What was he supposed to DO with information like that?! He scowled at Hannibal.

"Go feck yerself, you tryhard bugger."

The feeling from before was back.

Only this time he could feel that there was something more to it. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up and he felt a tingle run from the tips of his toes to the points of his horns. Everything screamed at him that he needed to be moving so he did just that, grabbing Penny with one arm and Yo-Cho with the other, he would throw himself and his friends down to the floor.

Not a second later the night erupted with noise as the three laser turrets of the LAAT-IE patrol gunship arriving at the side of the building opened fire and tore through the civilian-grade walls like they were tissue paper. Crix wasn't really aware of who was shouting about 'bloody buggers breaking bloody walls down' until he realized it was him.

So he shut up and instead grabbed up the rifle he had dropped to grab Penny.

The turrets fell silent as the gunship began to unload it's passenger capacity into the ruined frontage of Crix's own apartment, the nine hired guns and the single Sith. How did he know there were ten it total? He knew how many the gunship carried. How did he know that one was a Sith?

It was the same sickening feeling in the air as when he'd blasted one apart in the HQ.

"Yo-Cho, Penny... we need to get to the stairwell. Get outta here."
