Hello, I am writing a plot for a campaign I had in mind for a couple of friends of mine. Here's the plot details:

]
  • Characters who are outsiders (from the west of Faerun) are on a ship together on their way to the docks of Waterdeep.

  • A retired fighter (another character) who lives in Waterdeeps waits eagerly for this ship at the Waterdeep docks. She/he was notified that there will be warriors on the ship that he could use as assets for his mission.

  • The mission given to the Fighter was an investigation mission on the why's and who's about the kobolds retreating from the North of Faerun, running past Waterdeep in packs, not even noticing the city, but instead are having expressions of freight.

  • Then awhile the Fighter waits for the outsiders, another player character is arriving from the east of Waterdeep, for a mission of his own. This Dark Wizard comes from Empire of Shade in Anauroch.

  • Once the characters meet either in the docks or in Waterdeep's local tavern for a drink, the Fighter will discuss to the outsiders his/her concerns, mission details, etc. all the while the Dark Wizard listening in from a shadowy corner.

  • Once the players introduce their characters, they set themselves to the North, to the city Neverwinter in hopes to find rumors and evidence nearby the city.

  • [Now, wait happens between the walk from Waterdeep to Neverwinter is up to the players to decide.]

  • Once in Neverwinter, the player characters find themselves wrapped in inconsistant rumors in Neverwinter; additionally, there is fear in the air as the land north of Neverwinter is shrouded in shadow and can be seen from the walls of the city.

  • At this point the players can decide to help raise the defenses of Neverwinter or not all and go to the next city for their investigations. Or the players can do both :)

  • Once done with their influence on Neverwinter (if the Player Characters survived), they move to the next city, but will most likely need to take side jobs as most of expenses would have been spent on Neverwinter's defenses.

  • After about a weeks worth of odd jobs, Faerun seems changed. Carriers enter in Yartar (the current city the players should be in), sending letters about Neverwinter being overtaken by undead and demigods.

  • As the carriers' message seemed more direct than the rumors they originally received, they decide to collaborate on a plan.

What I left out is the back story I am working on. Towards the end of the current plot details, I mentioned undead and demigods having Neverwinter under control, well that's a beginning point to an idea I have and need help with. I want to make a gods/desses verses gods/desses war on the lands of Faerun, but I am having trouble making groups of alliances and foes. I intentionally want to have two armies, good gods/desses verses dark/evil gods/desses. The vision is to emulate Greek and Roman mythology a bit in terms of the gods and goddesses having a sort of influence on the mortals below, in this case the deities of Faerun are bringing their feuds to the lands of Faerun. I was hoping to use Bane and Talos to be the main deities in the campaign having a grudge against one another causing this war (but this is a maybe).

Since I am having a hard time looking for Dungeons and Dragons lore on the deities, I am needing help splitting the deities by Alignment and Alliance for this campaign. Suggestions are welcomed for the leading deities and their deity followers.

[FYI this is a Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 campaign.]

You can find huge amounts of information on the deities of DnD in Deities and Demigods. It's a 3.5 book.

Thank you. I'll see if I have that book in my electronic collection. However I am still deciding which two Deities (feuding against one another) to be the two to start the war on Faerun.

I would imagine two gods that are the polar opposites of each other. Order/Justice against Chaos/Evil. Maybe the patron god of War is on a serious power trip. Or whichever trickster god has driven the patron goddess of magic insane, so now she is rampaging a la Tiamat. If you want some ideas for Deity motivation, I'd suggest you read a little Norse Mythology too. Plus, those stories are always interesting regardless if you use them or not.

Also, I'm curious as to what level this campaign is designed for. With a Gods' War, I'm imagining mid-level at least.

Also, (yeah, I know, another one) I'm basing my homebrew deities off of a mix of Babylonian and Norse mythologies, so it's interesting to see someone use Greco-Roman. Good luck to you!

I know what you mean and I've been thinking of Bane verses Pelor, especially since both have very extremist cults/orders.

However, I'll use the other pantheons as influences.

I'm pretty sure Pelor isn't a Faerunian god. Torm would be a better choice, or the Triumvirate if you don't mind uses several different gods. That would be Tyr, Torm, and Illmater IIRC.
