Throughout her career, Julia had grown to despise social functions with the political class. She'd even hated them when she was a politician herself. However, as time had gone on it had become clear to her that they served a purpose - one beyond the consumption of expensive champagne, whilst listening to Senator Whoever of Somewhere carp on about the latest gossip rampaging through the rotunda. They simply were excellent places to do business, and, owing to her connections, Systech was eager to ensure that she put them to good use to rattle the can on their behalf.

A relatively unbecoming Corporation in the Outer-Rim, occupying the so-called 'Corporate Sector', Systech paid her a tidy packet and a fair amount of equity. However, it was the competitive nature of their performance-linked, and growth linked remuneration that had enticed her onto the board.

With the ongoing conflict across the galaxy erupting further still, and the galactic senate choosing to take action in the form of sanctions, Julia had suddenly found herself faced with a mound of problems. A mound that seemed not to be going away. However, not one to allow such things to get in the way of progress, she had focused her attention on the potential benefits this conflict could bring one of her corporate allies, Systech.

An adrenals, stims and chemicals company, Systech was a niche corporation, with the capacity to expand greatly with the correct degree of ambition driving it forward. Agriculture needs, such as massive industrial farming, was something she was keen to explore with some of the galactic political class. So to was the provision of stims to the medical facilities of the galaxy, indeed, she was currently mulling an idea to see if the Governments would fund a project to research if certain stims reduced the danger of the AMS virus, or reduced its speed. She was simply brimming with ideas.

It was the only reason she had hosted this event, in her own home on Etti IV today.

Of course, the event was a 'charity fundraiser', intended to raise money for AMS refugees. It just so happened that only politicians were invited.

Walking down the stairs in a white dress, lined with gold, she paused at the bottom and checked her comlink. The first of her real guests should be arriving soon. Once they passed through security at the main gate, they'd be escorted up to the house. She paused to speak to one of the staff brought in for the event, before turning her attention to her assistance, a young smartly dressed man in a black suit. ''You invited everyone on the list yes?'' she asked, topping up her lipstick using her comlinks reflective surface as a mirror ''No matter, too late to worry now.''

The poor sap had spent much of the past two days working up briefings on the entire invites list for her, their planets, key business areas and the major industries of their worlds. Julia didn't understand why he looked so tired - just take stims? She sighed as she put her comm unit away, she had spent most of the morning reading the briefs so she was ready for the event, and the rest of it getting ready whilst fielding calls from the board and others.

She rolled her eyes as her assistant retreated back upstairs to the office. Clasping her hands in front of her, she waited to recieve the first arrival.

Idril was not like everyone else, and being at parties like these always reminded her of that. She could mingle, she could pretend, and sometimes she could even convince them that she was, but in her heart of hearts she knew she was not. She had always felt much more comfortable in her workshop, working on something, fixing something.

She could make sense of everything that moved within her workshop. But anything that wasn't wires and motors, ones and zeroes, anything dealing with people, that was another story. She did not know how to deal with them, and no matter how well prepared she was, she could only guess at whether or not she was doing it right. Code was predictable, people weren't.

She had been successful in the workshop, and over time that had meant changes in her life as she rose through the ranks of BES-Corp. Now there were responsibilities on her shoulders, people who depended on her, and for their sake she had to do things she did not feel comfortable doing.

So she treated it like any other project, any new invention. She had studied, she had done her research, and she had prepared. It was the least she could do. In her small handbag there was an even smaller notebook full of names and designations, comments to start a conversation, anecdotes to keep them going, and what she hoped was a sufficient number of jokes. She was not a charmer, she was not comfortable with people, but today she would have to make them think she was.

"Fake it till you make it," she whispered encouragingly to herself as she approached the entrance, "fake it till you make it."

She spotted the host and put on her best smile, one that seemed to put people the most at ease, and reached out with her right hand to greet Governor in a manner that was culturally acceptable for new acquaintances on Lahsbane.

"Governor Hipori, thank you for the invitation."

Briefly, a flicker of concern flashed across Julias face. Governor? Julia could have sworn she'd stepped down from that role. Making a mental note to have someone fired, she was not sure who, a pleasant smile returned to her face as she shook Vizslas hand. From her research prior to the event - well, her teams research - Julia new that the newcomer was a member of the BES-Corp Cooperative.

Cooperative.

The word rolled around her head like a dirty phrase. Cooperative. She shuddered at the thought of it - giving the workers anything more would only encourage them, after all. Julia thought back to her time in he Blackwell Operations Department, when the then CEO had done a talk to the executives ahead of a routine counter-intelligence mission. 'The place is a Cooperative, so when they aren't braiding each others hair and smelling bad, they'll be busy going bankrupt - it's our job to help them with the latter.'

Words which rang true to this day.

''Please, call me Julia.'' she replied, with her most disarming smile as she welcomed a member of a possible competitor. As it stood, neither BES-Corp or Systech where big enough to afford an all-out-conflict, so it was most likely that they'd have scope to grow into their own markets, before exploring any possible overlaps that would need to be resolved. ''I must admit, it is a delight to have a representative of New Mandalore here, it is always a pleasure to welcome those with a similar approach to galactic affairs.'' she lied.

The New Mandalorians and Julia Hipori could not be more different.

She was just very very good at hiding such differences. She did want to work with BES-Corp, as an agricultural machinery manufacturer, they had use for the chemicals Systech made, and that suited her fine. ''Can I get you a drink?'' she asked.

Emryc was a man that wore many hats. Sith was one he wore less and less these days, but there were no signs of him slowing down in the corporate space. CHD was a venture that was already bringing him a fair amount of success. The company having been a trading firm prior to his buy out meant it had existing contracting vehicles that could be leveraged. The people he put in place would overhaul the administrative functions in no time and have inventory selling to the Sith, Syndicates and any other scummy customer in the galaxy.

The half Sephi hadn’t been to Hipori’s home before, even though he had worked with her quite a bit. Emryc was a private man by nature, and most that interacted with him knew that. He attended formal events, but seldom sought to make friends. He wanted to come here because he knew the value of networking. Emryc had to grin at the stunning home, thinking back to his own choices of still living out of the same ship he had since he was a teenager.

Emryc was dressed in a blazer, button down and jeans, his hair styled and with a modest chrono on his wrist. And of course, accented with brand name cologne. As was his usual tradition, he arrived alone, no doubt the media tracking his every movement even now.

The half Sephi stepped in to spot Julia conversing with someone he recognized as a BEScorp executive. Emryc liked to study up on who he would be meeting before social gatherings, and that woman was certainly someone to keep an eye on. Based on the funding series the company went through so far, its value projected a massive IPO.

Emryc grabbed himself a whiskey off a passing tray, striding over towards them. He would politely wait for a break in the conversation before introducing himself. He first glanced at Hipori, offering her a grin, “Julia,” Emryc said, “Don’t think I’ve ever seen you out of a suit and I’m quite impressed,” His tone was actually genuine.

He glanced over at the Pantoran woman, extending his hand to shake hers, “Emryc Thorne,” He said simply, not bothering with titles, “Pleasure to meet you.”

Julias face practically lit up as the half-Sephi businessman and politician, Emyrc Thorne arrived. She’d sent an invite over, well - her assistant had - a few weeks ago, but was 99 per cent sure that he would be unable to make it, after all, he was a busy man and mixing with executives of her particular reputation probably did not do much for his image. The fact he was here genuinely pleased her, she found the man an intellectual equal, something Julia found an increasing rarity, on top of being quite the looker to boot.

Since entering into their new venture, the CHD, Julia had found a new appreciation for his willingness to engage in some ‘blue sky thinking’ when it came to corporate strategy. Emryc was not above using underhand methods to avoid these sanctions - legal methods, yes - but only just.

The executive noticed that Emryc went for his trademark drink upon arrival, a tumbler of whiskey that was worth more than the annual salary of the man carrying the tray it sat on. She laughed as Emyrc remarked on her dress sense ”I don’t often have occasion not to be, Emryc.” came the reply ”But it is nice to be able to open a different wardrobe for once.”

”Ms. Vizsla is over from BES-Corp, that fantastic new startup on New Mandalore. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe you’ve done some work on agricultural machinery?” she asked the New Mandalorian, looping Emryc into their discussion as she did so.

"I.." Idril was caught off guard by Julia's comment about similar governance, because it went against she had found in her research, thankfully the offer of a drink was a good distraction to cover her confusion. "That would be great."

That was when they were joined by another, and Idril almost dropped the handbag she was carrying on recognizing who it was. She fought the urge to open up the bad and pull out her notes and go over what she had on the man. Unfortunately there was no time for that, and she just had to fight against the anxiety that made her question if she was prepared for this. There was no alternative, at least not if she didn't want to look like a complete fool by just running off to the washroom.

"President Thorne, it's a pleasure." Idril said as she took his hand while Julia was making introductions, hoping that her nervousness wasn't showing. "Yes," she began in response to Julia's question, her voice becoming less strained and more comfortable as she spoke about machinery. "Yes, indeed. We actually launched a whole new line not too long ago, with more emphasis on automation and efficiency. A 15% increase in harvest efficiency, with a 30% reduction in cost of operation compared to the last generation, we really hope this will help alleviate some of the strain put on food production by the AMS virus." She paused as she realized she was was going off script, none of this was in the notes she had prepared. But to anyone with any skill at reading people, it would be very obvious that this was the most sincere she had been so far.

"Sorry, I did not make it seem like I was presenting you with a sales pitch. But we are very proud of being able our bit to help out."
