Hello everyone,

Nearly a decade ago, I used to RP at The Rebel Faction and The Gungan Council, if anyone's familiar with those boards. RL pulled me away for quite some time, but I confess that Rogue One's release has me itching to get back into the RP arena. Since the aforementioned boards seem to have died down quite a bit, I thought I'd try something new, and SWRP came up as one of the most active/well-established.

I skimmed through the rules/new user guides, but had a few questions for clarification about the style of RP used here:
- Would someone looking for a text-based, more free-form RP fit in here? I.e., not concerned with numbers and stats, etc, and more concerned with the storytelling aspect through the lens of playing one's own character (and of course avoiding god-moding).
- Also, I noted that characters can be killed off here without the character-owner's permission, or at least that's how I interpreted the rules. Is that correct? Is it a common occurrence for folks to have their characters killed off without prior agreement between interacting parties?

Looks like a very well-developed RP and community, just curious about the RP style so I can go in with the right mindset. Thanks to whoever takes the time to answer!

Welcome to the boards!
Quick answers to your questions:
1) Yes, you would fit in perfectly. Many profiles don't have any form of numbers or stats. Some do, some don't. It's based on personal preference for the most part. Most of what happens here is more story-based than numbers based.
2) Sort of. Threads are by default death-enabled, but you can create threads that are not death enabled where your character can't die (This will usually be noted in the first post of the thread). If you are careful about what threads you join, your character can't just be randomly killed off. Or at least it's quite a bit more difficult. Open threads (where everyone can join) that don't have notes on the top.. well, joining them means that someone could try (And possibly succeed) in killing your character.

For more in depth answers.. Talk to someone who knows more things!

But really, just say something here if this doesn't answer your questions.

Thanks Sierrien!

That makes sense, just trying to get a feel for the vibe. I love the writing/story-telling and character development aspects, but tend to shy away from RPs that get into nitty-gritty technical details or have very rigid/complicated playing structures. I've got tabletop games for that. :)

I'll have to get to work on a profile then!

Hm, not sure if I'd joined here on the past, but thanks Darasuum!

Another question (and if this is the wrong place to post it, please let me know and I shall make amends!) that came up as I was writing my character profile. Here's a very brief sketch as background for the question; I'll flesh it out more in the profile itself:

Evelyn Roslin is an untrained Force sensitive human with a military background who recently lost her fiance as collateral damage to local gang violence (not positive on the planet yet, but probably Coruscant). Struggling to cope with her emotions over the sudden and senseless act, she feels aloof and unable to find meaning in any of her former activities. Additionally, the intense emotions sparked immediately after his death caused a brief but violent swell of the Force inside her (similar to Anakin's raw rage after Padme's death, though not nearly as powerful) awakening a part of her that previously laid dormant without any sort of formal training. Feeling lost, and unsure of where to turn, she makes her way to the Jedi Temple in search of purpose and healing.

My character is seeking peace at the Jedi temple, but given the raw nature of her emotions and complete lack of training in the Force (coupled with her military background), she's not exactly stable in the Light. Here are my question about that scenario:

1) Is it appropriate to start a thread with her wandering Coruscant, and essentially let who she encounters (Jedi, Sith, etc) start twisting her fate and see where that path leads? Or do I need to definitively decide on a faction from the outset? I envision a level of internal conflict either way, as she's not simply going to say, "Yes, submitting to an ideology founded on fear, anger, and rage sounds swell! Evelyn SMASH!" On the flip side, she's not the most calm/centered person to easily accept the Light in the beginning, either, and the Dark Side has a way of seducing through those kinds of emotions.

There's no need to pick sides from the very outset. Plenty of people have Independent (Indie) Force sensitives with varying backgrounds and degrees of training with the Force (be it Dark or Light).

That said, it is important to note (albeit perhaps somewhat fortuitous for the purposes of your character's story) that Coruscant is currently being attacked by the Sith. You may have noted a few threads floating about in the Story section tagged as "Main Threads" and titled "Battle of Coruscant". This is a major battle currently being played out between the Sith Brotherhood, the Jedi and Republic. The outcome has been predetermined to be a Sith victory, so Coruscant will be under full Sith control soon enough.

In any event though, your character would be very likely to bump into a Sith or Jedi on Coruscant at present. Though there would be little time for pleasantries, I'd wager. Sith invasion fleets tend to put a damper on tea time. lol

Ah, certainly an important point and duly noted! I suppose the Sith aren't known for their love of tea. Once I've got a draft profile, I'll check through current threads/timeline background to make sure I'm not coming up with anything wildly out of left field WRT current galactic events before posting it.

Many thanks for the helpful answers!

I see how she could have possibly lost her fiancee in a Sith bombardment or something. I think it could be pretty interesting to read if you manage to finish yourprofile before the conflict ends...

Thanks FinnSimmons!

The Sith bombardment would make sense, but I'll probably stick with the idea of it being a random act of violence that can't be attributed to one faction or another. That's for two reasons 1) From a practical standpoint, it keeps it more open as to whether she goes Light or Dark, as otherwise she'd start off with some fairly heavy personal prejudices against the Sith (as opposed to a more generalized dislike/fear that hasn't previously involved direct contact). And 2) the emotional impact of it being a senseless act of violence, with no person or group to pin it on, creates a unique sort of emotional turmoil that I think is useful as a starting point for the character. If it was a Sith bombardment, while still random and unfair, it can 'fit' in a larger narrative and be made sense of more easily than if it's just a stray blaster bolt from an unnamed thug.

Excited to get going, this place seems fantastic. :)

Oh, final question before I dip my toe into an RP: What are the guidelines on swearing? I noticed that the rules mentioned profanity filtered by the site was not allowed in avatars/signatures, but wasn't sure if that meant all swearing was banned, just certain words, etc. I wanted to check before sprinkling in f-bombs in my first and accidentally ending up on the naughty list.

Suppose I'll field this one as well, considering I have a Sith who uses a fair deal of profanity in her dialog.

From my experience, no one really raises an eyebrow to common swearing. Hell, damn, shit, even the f-bomb, I've seen them all used, but the key is to use them in moderation. So long as you are't using them profusely, you should be alright.

Some people also like to use the Star Wars equivalents of profanity (which I don't actually know aside from "Kriff", which is universally accepted to mean "F*ck"), some don't. It's just a matter of personal preferences really.

Thanks for the clarification Gamov, makes sense to me. I wasn't planning on going crazy with it, but there's just certain situations where folks cuss . . . particularly with my character's military background, since swearing tends to become more of its own dialect in military settings.

For now, I went ahead and used 'frak' in place of the f-bombs that I noticed were censored. Admittedly, I stole that from Battlestar Galactica, but . . . hey, it sounds sufficiently Star Wars-esque. At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. . .

And on that note, I'll make just one plug here, and then shut my mouth. :-) I'm currently soliciting for involvement in Evelyn's debut thread. See Story OOC thread, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" for details if interested.

Welcome! It seems everyone has got your questions covered. If you have any more don't hesitate to ask. Oh and to help in the future if you want to brainstorm or flesh out characters with others before positng them the player workshop here is a great place for that!

Whether or not its need, to clarify on your question about killing character... Your character can't be killed automatically. You'll always have a chance to respond. Granted if you write something stupidly or back yourself into a corner you might not be able to keep your character alive in your response.

Thanks for the clarification and welcome @MasterTyvokka!

The no auto-kill makes a lot more sense, and is basically in-line with what I've experienced before. When I posted that question, I was having flash-backs of my first attempts at Halo PVP, which basically involved, "Hey guys! Cool game-" *headshot* "Well, shucks, now I'm respawned, time to explor-" *headshot* "Hm, guys, I don't know if this - " *rocket explosion* . . .and so on.

Possibly, but I was also just bad at PVP. A bunch of my guy friends invited me to play over LAN in college, and all my previous gaming experience had been either co-op or single player. MarioKart 64 was as close as I'd been to playing against other humans. Turns out, humans are a heck of a lot harder to survive against.
