Spoilers, maybe?

In Paul S. Kemp's upcoming novel, Lords of the Sith, there is going to be the first described gay character in the new Star Wars Canon. To be honest, I can't think of a homosexual character in old EU, but that helps make the point. It's an oddly under represented group in the Star Wars universe. The character is going to be a female named Moff Mors, and it sounds like she may be one of the main characters in the story.

It'll be interesting to see how this information will affect the character, if at all. In a way, I sort of hope that they don't focus on her sexuality, and certainly hope it doesn't turn out to be some sort of fanservice-y.

Very interesting.

To be honest, I didn't really know that their were same sex characters except in SWTOR where I have seen them happening.

But that was a Traviss book, most people try to convince themselves that they didn't exist. :P

Doesn't change the facts there were some.

Still, I hope they aren't doing it just for the sake of it.

It's funny that you mention that, sicne I think that's exactly the pitfall Karen Traviss fell into with Sacrifice. Medrit Vasur was a gay male human for the sake of introducing a gay couple, and the references to it were very subtle. Traviss successfully introduced a gay couple into Star Wars, and props to her for doing that...but it was such a small, unremarkable thing, a completely understated footnote about a relationship that wasn't all that important to the plot or anything. It felt really arbitrary, with no real point beyond somehow stating that Mando culture was amazing and progressive.

By the sounds of things, Moff Mors is a successful military carrer woman and a strong character in her own right, as well as a lesbian. I don't feel like her sexuality is going to be a footnote, and I'll be sorely disappointed if it is. If her sexuality is going to be so openly defined and given such significance in the press coverage of the book, then there needs to be a point behind her sexuality being so important. She shouldn't be gay for the sake of being gay.

Those characters are also non-canon. This character is official. So that's cool.

Paul S. Kemp hasn't disappointed me yet, so lets hope he does better then Traviss did to hers.

It would be pretty hard to do worse than her. I've had people who defend the LotF series outright apologize for Traviss. Really says something when even people who like an unpopular series outright admit that her contributions to it were very weak.

Anyways, I'm really interested to see where they're going to go with this. From what I gleaned from the articles, things look very promising.

Arbitrary homosexuality?

Unless the info on the game is outdated, there is no same sex relationships in TOR.

There are same-sex attracted interactions and relations, but technically no relationships per se.

Isn't this 2015? Is homosexuality still that big of a deal?

I mean, I live in the desert surrounded by rednecks and they could seem to care less about homosexuality around here.

Yes, it's a big deal when there's still a lack of representation, including in major franchises like Star Wars.

Strange that they didn't add this in Star Wars, but in a franchise running alongside it about the same time - Dragon Age, did.

Both Mass Effect and Dragon Age has had homosexual relationships in them, and in game, it seems to be treated like it's not an issue.

Yes, it's a big deal when there's still a lack of representation, including in major franchises like Star Wars.

Homosexuals aren't the only community that doesn't receive legitimate representation in Star Wars. Basically every community except white males doesn't receive the proper representation. We've had 1 main white female supporting character in each trilogy, 1 black guy in each trilogy (each in minor roles), an asian in each trilogy (both of which are nameless), a Pacific Islander that was cloned a lot (doesn't count as more representation to me), essentially no black woman ever stepped foot on any of the sets as far as I can tell, and all characters have fit their expected gender roles to the T. Let's only briefly mention the blatant racism portrayed by Gungans and Neimoidians. And I'm pretty sure we completely passed over South Asian and Arab communities entirely.

Let's face it, this isn't the cast of Star Trek. There's not a lot of variety in Star Wars, and when there is, it comes off as forced. Aliens are not a valid substitution for minorities. Now, we can point out that homosexuals haven't been represented adequately. Because Star Wars is about straight white men.

I'm hopeful the new trilogy changes that and the black character is the lead male, but I'm bound to be disappointed.

Never said the LGBT community was the only one without legit representation.
