First hour of beta consisted of the following: *logging in* FAIL. *logging in* FAIL. *logging in* I'M IN. *making character* **** I'M BOOTED OUT! *logging in*

Servers are now down as the devs get it sorted.

I lost all interest when I heard how much the per month subscription is going to be. I was SUPER psyched and attempting to get a beta key but if I can't play it afterwards there's no point to me. 15 bucks a month is too much for poor little minimum wage income me no matter how good the game is, and I say that as a truly hardcore Elder Scrolls fan.

Why surprised? $15 a month has been the standard subscription rate for almost every mainstream released MMORPG in the United States for the past 10 years....

I think its more after the original hopes of merely paying for the game itself, the change back to a more standard model (due to underestimating the costs of an MMO more than a tad) took some by surprise.

Just watch though, guys. It'll be a normal subscription of 15 for like, 6 months. Maybe a year. Then, it will go F2P. Thats what a ton of MMOs do. DDO did it, and most famously TOR did it. ESO might be fun but the management will be flipping the bird to the original players who paid for the experience soon enough with their F2P stuff.

Gandalf is at the other end for the first area yelling "YOU SHALL NOT PASS" and causing everyone to fall to their doom...

I would love to see that but I've spent the last have hour requesting my character's load apparently.

Same. It has been happening for me on two different characters of two different factions, so it's something technical.

It has been fixed.

So far, I haven't found much about the game that would keep me playing. Granted, mechanics and stuff may be modified, but I'm not terribly impressed with the current build.

Someone needs to upkeep high traffic servers for premium service.

But why? Games like WoW and EVE show that people are willing to pay for a subscription. IIRC, TOR went to free to play due to a decrease in player base. I doubt the decision was made solely to satisfy gamers. This is EA we are talking about here.

This is a huge misconception of subscription models. Simply looking at the public revenue statements show that server costs contribute for less than 1% of the cost of running an MMO. That money is going into things like manpower and resources.
But why? Games like WoW and EVE show that people are willing to pay for a subscription.

Games like Guild Wars 2 and Lord of the Rings Online show that you don't need a subscription to be successful.

Well, I don't know a ton about those games, but even Free-to-play games make a metric effton of money, like World of Tanks and League of Legends. It's all about those microtransactions.

Also, team fortress 2, since it went FTP

Of note however is that Lord of the Rings Online didn't actually start F2P however - it changed to that model later on. I remember because I bought the Mines of Moria expansion when it came out, blissfully unaware that I was incapable at the time (having no debit or credit card, due to age) of actually subscribing once the free week codes were up.

It is among the only notable MMO's that transitioned to F2P because it was deemed more profitable, opposed to because of diminishing profits.

I'm defining successful as generating a significant profit and maintaining a steady player base after trials (if any) expire.

I must say I find myself rather unimpressed with ESO so far. I found the whole class-less gameplay in Skyrim to be rather novel, and since ESO is coming out of the popularity of Skyrim, I was expecting something akin to it, in an MMO setting. Yet I feel this game is actually more linear then many other MMO's I've played.

Id like to get it as Im a huge fan of the series. But much like TOR I expect it to fail and me not play it. No bethesda means a lot.

It's horrible so far. It feels like Age of Conan, but worse somehow.
