Actually according to Dick Cheney's policies after the collapse of the Soviet Union it was so we could maintain our position as a super power. The ideology the Military was used with after that point was that we could intercept and eliminate 'potential threats'. Mind you, what a threat was has never been defined.

Republicans are not very stable, unfortunately. They really screw things up most of the time. The destruction of American Culture is actually due to Republican beliefs (Read a book called "Affluenza"). The problem with the States is not the Bi-party system, which isn't very smart anyway, but rather the two parties themselves. We have hyper Lessaiz Faire Capitalists on one side, and slightly more moderate Capitalists on the other. Both are Right Wing. Both want the same goals; Strength of the United States through the processes of Capitalist Profit.
We "shovel" huge amounts of money into the Military during peace time so that we are prepared during war time.

Democrats aren't too smart sometimes. Republicans... they're usually pretty stables, except for that gay guy who got kicked out a while back, what a fuckass he was.
Personally, I'm conservative, but I think there are a few flaws in our bi-party system here. Stupid politics... I suppose it pretty much works though since the U.S. is the uberly dominant world superpower that nobody can touch right now. At the rate we're going, it might not remain that way for much longer... who can say? Not I, most certainly not I.
