BLACKROW HYPERLOGISTICS

AN NPC FACTION

DESCRIPTION

  • - STRUCTURE -

Blackrow Hyperlogistics is a massive, Galaxy-spanning corporation chiefly concerned with the shipping industry, transporting mainly inert freight and passengers. The company is publicly traded, and is controlled by a board of the chief shareholders, headed by a chairman. Blackrow is an extremely large corporation, with its headquarters located on the planet Corellia in Coronet City. It is organized around a number of divisions, responsible for serving different market segments, although all are considered to be beneath the Blackrow Hyperlogistics umbrella.

Blackrow encourages strong employee loyalty, and beings working for Blackrow are provided with a wide array of complimentary services designed to care for them "from cradle to grave." Employees are offered free housing in the company arcology structures on Corellia, and their offspring can receive free education at the company vocational school, which runs from kindergarten through secondary education, with career prep tracks from elementary school on. Beings in the employ of Blackrow can choose to take their pay either in standard credits or in company scrip, which can be used for purchases in company stores of non-complimentary goods or to pay for non-complimentary services provided by the company; its value within the company is fixed at a ratio of 2-1 in its favor against Galactic credit standard.

Access to outside media in the company arcologies is generally not restricted, but is monitored, and the company operates its own internal news, entertainment and communication services, which it encourages all employees to use. When undertaking company business, all employees are given access to a personal expense account, the total daily spending allotment of which is determined by the employee's position and salary.

This all-encompassing work environment, in which whole generations are born and raised, produces employees whose loyalty and deference to their employer is absolute. Beings who have lived their whole lives within the company would be likely to disown a family member or close friend before betraying Blackrow, and tend to have trouble functioning outside the corporate environment. Infractions against the company - perceived or otherwise - are also dealt with severely, and theft of company property is grounds for termination of employment.

  • - DIVISIONS -

Blackrow Hyperlogistics is organized into several divisions, each responsible for a different segment of the transport market. They include the following:

    BLACKROW SHIPPING
Blackrow Shipping is the bread and blue butter of Blackrow Hyperlogistics. The original core of the company's business, Blackrow Shipping provides freight transport service across the Galaxy for all manner of customers, primarily through its fleet of drone barges, which provide economy priced shipping to well-traveled destinations, though also using crewed freighters which can take routes too difficult or dangerous for drones to travel. Their activities generate most of Blackrow's revenue, and account for most of its activity across the Galaxy.

    BLACKROW STARLINES
Blackrow's second most profitable division, Blackrow Starlines is the company's passenger service, and provides regular liner service to points across the Galaxy at competitive prices. Blackrow Starlines primarily operates through regional hub systems, and contracts with smaller franchises to provide connecting flights to destinations off the beaten track.

    BLACKROW SPECIAL LOGISTICS
Blackrow's "specialty" division, Blackrow Special Logistics handles customers with unusual requirements. Need supplies brought to a mining facility deep inside a hazardous nebula? Need personnel and equipment extracted from a war zone? Want absolutely fresh bantha steaks delivered from one side of the Galaxy to the other? Blackrow Special Logistics has you covered. Employing specialty personnel and equipment, they charge a premium for their services, but they'll get the job done.

    BLACKROW PORT SYSTEMS
Blackrow Port Systems is Blackrow's port management and services division, responsible for running Blackrow's various company-owned orbital spaceports and freight marshaling yards. They primarily provide intra-company services for Blackrow's other divisions, although some smaller planetary governments have contracted them to staff and run their own spaceports.

    BLACKROW SERVICES
Blackrow's maintenance division, Blackrow Services personnel are responsible for the smooth running of the company's vast space fleet, as well as maintenance and inspection services at the company's spaceports. Blackrow Services primarily attends to intra-company work, much like Blackrow Port Systems, though like the aforementioned department they are sometimes contracted by small governments and other corporations. They often work closely with Blackrow Port Systems.

    BLACKROW RISK MANAGEMENT
Blackrow Risk Management is the company's internal security division, tasked with policing the other divisions, and with providing security for Blackrow's operations, including port security and aerospace escort to deter pirates and other attackers. Possessing a sizeable star-fleet and ground forces, this division is often augmented by third-party mercenaries and functions more like a military organization than corporate security. They at least feign adherence to Republic laws and regulations, but it is an open secret that Blackrow Risk Management has many skeletons in its closet, and is primarily used to do the company's dirty work.

  • - HISTORY -

Blackrow Hyperlogistics is a relatively old company, founded 197 years ago by Grifalk Blackrow, its first chairman. Blackrow was a relatively small company until the outset of the Hundred-Year Darkness, when it took over territory abandoned by many of the other large shipping firms as they began to take Republic, Jedi and Exile contracts in support of their war effort. The company has been steadily growing since, and has become a titan in its industry, with ruthless, predatory business practices and an utterly loyal workforce leveraged to unseat many of its rivals.

Blackrow's current chairman is Parneaux Blackrow, the charismatic great-grandson of the original founder. Parneaux has inherited the reigns of a company which is expected only to become more powerful and influential as the great darkness following the Saber Wars lingers over the Galaxy, working to reinvigorate Galactic commerce to their own design.

ASSETS
Blackrow Hyperlogistics keeps extensive facilities on and around Corellia, including its aforementioned main corporate offices, several arcologies for employee housing, a corporate vocational school catering to all species and ages, a large orbital spaceport, a vast repair yard and an enormous freight marshaling yard. Off-planet facilities include regional branch offices in most significant starports and all known ecumenopoleis, as well as small space stations and freight marshaling yards orbiting worlds with particularly heavy space traffic.

Blackrow's massive transport fleet consists primarily of drone barges, which provide economy service along most well established hyperlanes. The company also operates a smaller fleet of light, medium and bulk crewed freighters, which are used for express shipping, and along routes which are too complex or dangerous for drone vessels.

Blackrow also operates a large number of economy-rate bulk passenger liners, which offer service along most major hyperlanes, with regional shuttle flights connecting hub destinations to planets along ancillary routes. Many of these local routes are not serviced by Blackrow proper, but by regional franchisees who own their own ships, but who operate under the Blackrow name mostly for brand recognition.

Finally, Blackrow Risk Management, the company's security division, maintains a decent-sized fleet of combat-capable ships. Ostensibly meant to combat piracy, this fleet is composed primarily of armed pinnace-type ships, patrol boats and starfighters, along with a number of heavy gunships and a few capital ships no larger than corvettes. Blackrow's ground forces, when they are deployed, consist primarily of low-cost combat droids, which - importantly, given their infrequent use - can be stored for long periods of time, and - even more importantly - do not have to be paid. Due to laws in the Republic regarding the ownership of droid armies, the majority of these droids are kept in vast secret depots located in the Outer Rim.

Though nothing compared to the powerful navies which roamed the Galaxy during the early years of the Hundred-Year Darkness, Blackrow's space forces comprise enough ships and firepower to handily take on the average system defense fleet of a minor star system, and land enough troops to occupy a major city and seriously threaten the surrounding countryside.

Blackrow has been accused on numerous occasions of using its private military forces to strong-arm competitors and unfriendly local governments. Their sizeable merchant fleet, as well, has occasionally been used to support military operations. The company is infamous for hiring privateers - usually low-rent mercenaries or genuine pirates - to raid and harass their competitors, although Blackrow's legal department seems to be distressingly good at establishing plausible deniability for such actions, meaning that investigations can almost never satisfactorily trace the privateers back to their employers.

  • - CORPORATE TITLES -

    Level 1 - Staff.
    Level 2 - Manager.
    Level 3 - Senior Manager.
    Level 4 - Executive.

  • - SECURITY TITLES -

    Level 1 - Guardsbeing.
    Level 2 - Sargeant.
    Level 3 - Major.

INTENT
Blackrow Hyperlogistics is intended as a gloomy, corporate counterpoint to the Galaxy's independent freighter pilots and merchants, notably the Ossein Fleets and their members. It is also intended to be a sort of proto Trade Federation, a useful non-aligned NPC faction which can be used as antagonists or plot devices in all manner of role-plays.

This might be an ideal antagonist in my plotlines for House Comprassi.
