They taught me not to question war, war was everywhere. War was a racket for those who desired money and power - they were right at least about some of it. But I have little need for money except to pay for the essentials and equipment. I don't need power as all the power I could desire lies at the barrel of of a L.A.W.S Peacemaker. War may be a racket - I could give those slimy sithspit Hutts a lesson or two in racketeering. There was a point when no less than fifteen neutral systems called me ruler in one form or another. If your enemy is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is temperamental, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. If sovereign and subject are in accord, put division between them. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected. And above all else make sure they fear you more than the lashes of their masters. We have received your offer of surrender and reject it; we did not come to receive your supplication but to enact judgement. The time to surrender has long passed. The verdict is writ by your own hands.

You will be paying us in your blood tonight.

STRENGTHS

__ Artyom is a career soldier and his mindset is absolutely attuned to the Act of making War it is in many ways his only strength other than his physical capabilities and long career of slaughter. His mind is only attuned for War. He was part of the Sun Guards Cybernetics program which keeps his mind interlinked at all times with a steady flow of information and to keep him aware and capable of giving orders as a special forces operator. He can tend to be a lonewolf coordinating assaults from a sniper position or from the front in handling the "aggressive negotiations" that spring up from time to time.

WEAKNESSES

__ The most obvious weakness is his care for his men and religious fanaticism believing that any actions the Sun Guard take are justified for their survivial as a religon and as a group. His end justifies the means attitude stops at the lives of his men and he would not squander them to continue to fight a losing battle. Another weakness is that due not only to the small amount of soldiers he has he must maximise the effects of his tiny unit and will not risk them in larger open engagements. Not only that but as a Commander he has earned few allies but many enemies in the Outer Rim.As for his own weakness he can become arrogant and proud and this has led to many more and more erratic moves in combat that could be easily exploited. He also has a serious weakness for the more fine Twi'lek females.

PERSONALITY

__
"There can never be peace among the stars, only an eternity of slaughter and the laughter of hungry gods. The crueler war is the sooner it is over with." - Histories of Atrocities.

Artyom has a personality built upon indoctrination and a lifetime of servitude. As a young Tribune he was quiet and did not often speak up at meetings of the Legates. As he matured and had his "Baptism of Fire" when the Sun Guard were paid to take on a group of Jedi groups near Lyta. The operation was a massive failure and the Sun Guard lost well over 85% of their total strength to the Jedi. After this he was a changed man filled with ambition by the age of twenty four he held the fourth highest rank in the Sun Guard and by the time he was Thirty claimed the title of Commander. Whilst most Sun Guard had become isolationist he lead an extremist group into the Outer Rim. Before he decided to go it alone. His endless ambition is fueled by his hatred of Jedi for killing many of his fellow Legionaries. This is slightly paradoxical as the Sun Guard religion worships the Force and actively collects holocrons and other such items as payment. There was a time when the Sun Guard were a Sith Cult over a thousand years ago and while they still follow many of the Dark Side Philosophies mainly that Might is Right and the weak are meant to be lead by the strong.

In his religious beliefs he is utterly devout and uncompromising it is the Will of the Force that those strongest should rule. He despises those who views as weaker than himself either due to inexperience, their personalities or over reliance on the Force. True strength in his religion comes from mastering oneself above others. Those too stupid or weak are the cattle to be lead by the Strongest and he considers himself one of the strongest if not physically then in his own area of expertise in leading small units of cutthroats and psychopaths. He has killed many sentient sold others into slavery and lead men into battle but the adrenaline rush is what he lives for.

He also has a deep love of gemstones and since the collapse of the Galactic economy gemstones are some of the most widely accepted forms of currency outside the mid and inner rim. It isn't just that, they are shiny and he is attracted to them - money alone is worthless but gems and signs of outward wealth and power are definitely things he identifies with. As a writer of History he focuses on the application of Force and coercion for a society to gain power and influence over weaker societies. Although his series "The History of Atrocities" is highly biased it is worked off the Galactic Historians Basic model and despite the author it has achieved a level of popularity.

Hutt Space seeking employment for his soldiers and the odd personal job for himself having become bored scouting deep space for the Jedi to hunt.

History

Artyoms parents were originally slaves the Sun Guard had as servants but once he was born he was taken from them to be raised as Sun Guard himself. As a child he was put through a brutal training regime from almost as soon as he could walk. All Sun Guard children are raised together in communes before being set against one another in teams to compete in competitions for survival and resources - these differ from other societies rituals in that it is not about personal glory but if one member of a team fails they all fail so everyone must learn to work together with each others strengths and weaknesses. Artyom himself was not the strongest but rather one of the luckiest ones and certainly the most cunning. At the age of eight he set a trap for the other teams by leaving his own teams campsite in an exposed area and kept his friends hidden. When one of the other teams attacked they were set upon by his own friends who beat two of the attackers to death as a lesson.

From then he was marked out within the Sun Guard. By the age of fifteen he killed a Jedi apprentice during a raid on a Sith Tomb on Dromund Kass. The apprentice had originally disarmed Artyom and destroyed his force pike and as the young apprentice lorded his victory over him Artyom ran and the Jedi gave chase which lead him into a few trip mines Artyom had thrown down scattering the young Jedi into several places along a rather long narrow corridor. From this it was a steady stream of promotions earned as he undertook more and more missions and operations. He had a going rivalry with another Tribune Markasis a pureblood Thyrsian from a long line of distinguished Tycnahi warriors. Their rivalry spurred each to take on larger and larger risks during missions to one up the other. This came to open blows when during a prayer the two began to fight - frustrated to the point of no return with one another they caused a minor fracturing of their Legion, the Officer Corp decided to let the boys get on with it to see whom the stronger was and to test their leadership abilities. Artyom was in a relationship with Markasis sister Ylari which only fueled the conflict between them, the conflict came to a head a few years later when Ylalri fell pregnant.

Markasis had more men on his side and more of the Officers were sympathetic but the fighting got to the point one of Markasis thugs killed a friend of Artyoms. Finally the Officer Corp stepped in and stopped the violence. In retaliation many months later Artyom had Ylari herself a Legionnaire skinned and her bones made into a chair with the spine as the backrest and her molted skull above that, her many replacement bones and cybernetic implants visible. He had the chair sent to Markasis after a training session. Artyom counted on his rival coming at him in a rage but instead his rival committed suicide blasting his face off with a force pike. A much more reasonable solution to Artyom.

Artyom was punished severely for killing a fellow Legionnaire but it was generally not frowned on too highly as the killing of Legionaries was not common but it was not unheard of. After eight months surviving on a barren outer Rim World the Sun Guard returned to find the boy a man. Once back in the ranks he quickly resumed his place as someone with a record for getting things done. The Sun Guard of this pre Alliance War era were only rarely deployed outside the home Systems but Artyom was always the first to volunteer for such a duty. As stated he quickly rose through the ranks due to his personal ambition and his hard line extremism. He was popular with his soldiers but he would be known as "The Chairmaker" for quite some time.

When the Sun Guard Command decided to leave Thyrsian system to go their own way in the Galaxy once again the Chairmaker aged 26 was sent on a string of missions. Everything from intimidating planets into surrender, stealing resources for the Sun Guard fleet to the odd assassination of political rivals. By twenty nine he was commanding the Sun Guards first Cohort during the Alliance Sith Wars. The Sun Guard mostly they tried to stay below the radar of the Jedi and Sith and were largely successful whilst still collecting a vast repository of knowledge on the force of their own.

This was to change with Lyta. There the Jedi set a trap fearing the Sun Guard would join the Sith and so they leaked tales of an ancient Jedi temple filled with knowledge was found and many Jedi had flocked to find it's secrets - this was true there was a temple of the Ancient Jedi Order on the planet but it was relatively insignificant. The Sun Guard arrived not long after in force with a 5,000 strong Legion split into six cohorts. Artyom commanded the First Cohort which was the elite cohort within the Sun Guard. This was a massive undertaking from the Sun Guard and represented almost the entirety of their strength. However the Jedi had laid their trap well and a hiddenGalactic Alliance fleet ambushed the Sun Guard as they were deploying ground forces scattering their fleet and bombarding the drop and landing sites. The battle was hopeless but Artyom lead his Cohort deep into the jungle for some three months organising hit and run attacks and brutalising any GA or Jedi that was captured. Gradually however the net was closed around the First Cohort. Their defeat was absolute but he had prolonged their defeat and enacted a heavy toll on both the Jedi and the GA. The jungle canopy was deep and it gave cover from the Alliance fleet in orbits sensors making orbital bombardment largely useless.

The Jedi assault was brutal and elegant. of the original 1,200 strong First Cohort by the end of the jungle siege just one hundred and fifty were left. Artyom and the First Cohort were demoralised, cut off from supplies, their brothers, weapons and food. Artyom escaped the carnage by retreating deeper into the forest with his remaining soldiers and the GA/Jedi forces called off their attack to regroup. Luckily however Artyom lead his force on a four day and night march towards a GA staging area which they raided and made off with a Justice Class Gunship. The Sun Guard had almost been entirely obliterated and few others made it off world. The battle had been over before it had even started. Whilst he hates the Jedi for their role in what should have been a relatively simple smash and grab had been turned into a massacre. He had prolonged the battle only to escape it was a very bitter defeat with many old friends and war buddies perished along with their own stories of heroism and service histories never to be recalled at the mess tables.

When the Sun guard regrouped they numbered just three hundred. Artyom was the highest ranked member left he was the new Commander. He spent many years re-consolidating his members and preparing new recruits but still their numbers would never reach over four hundred. Artyom lead the Sun Guard away from more religious inclinations towards more tangible assets and so many jobs were taken on to help enact regime change or to quell uprisings on worlds that meant very little to him. In this period he was known as the Tyrant and wrote his histories. In keeping the peace on the fifteen worlds he had secured order for coin and patronage and although his force was still small it was it's surgical precision that gave it it's effectiveness. It would not be untill later he would learn it was the Hutt Cartels who were financing these hostile take overs he only cared that they paid well. Small units of Sun Guard were stationed on these worlds to remind the Ruling Classes of their place in case a few wished to end up victims of the Chairmaker or worse those they had so grievously wronged in the lower classes.

The crescendo of this campaign would be to dislodge a Mandalorian racketeering unit from Séléann. The Mandaloarians outnumbered the Sun Guard unit 3 -1 and had far better ships than the Sun Guard had available. With just a single Justice class Gunship available Artyom devised a plan to get the Sun guard onto the planet by stealth. It was a two pronged plan. First a small freighter would be raided and it's crew jettisoned into space. It was not difficult to find a ship that fit the bill, using this a small strike team of three fire teams would gain access to the planet and scout out defence systems such as turbo lasers and shielding. But to make sure the team was not discovered the Justice Class vessel would raid shipping coming in and out of the planet and engage the small Mandalorian fleet in short skirmishes and constant harassment over a week to frustrate their commanders before any landing attempt was made.

+++FLEET DISPOSITION+++

Sun Guard Raiders
1x Justice Class Gunship
3x Yjak Gunships.

Mandalorian Protectorates
1x Nebulon-V Escort Frigate
2x Crusader Class Gunships

+++GROUND FORCE DISPOSITION+++

[1]The Mandalorians lost much equipment and soldiers when their frigate crashed many of their walkers were unusable as were their tanks listed are the ones that could be salvaged in the immediate aftermath.

Sun Guard Raiders
80x Stellar Legionnaires
2x Stellar Tribune
4x Sniper Teams
60x Planetary Militia Conscripts
4x M3 Skywalker AFS
3x Akatriel-Pattern Attack Walker

Mandalorian Protectorates
278x Verde/Ge’verde/Ruus’alor
8x Acklay Armed Recon Walker
2x Kandosii-class Heavy Repulsor Tank

The fireteams landed successfully without detection in the dead of night as the Mandalorian Protectorate Fleet had been goaded out to try and engage the Sun Guard Raiders. There were some Mandalorian troops on the ground to protect key holdings such as the planetary shield and defence grid but not so many. On the second day of raiding the Mandalorian Protectorate fleet sent both their crusaders forward whilst the Nebulon stayed to protect Séléann. The Smirkishes were on and off and frustrated the Mandalorian Commander to no end. After a week scouting Artyom had managed to gain access to the planetery defence systems by leading his fireteams into the mountains where the main defence grid network was housed, it was a s hort battle as most the defending millitia surrnederd and had little love of the Mandalorians, there were a few Mandalorians stationed who were rounded up and killed. With control over the defence grid Artyom painted and targeted the Nebulon Frigate with numerous ground based turbolaser and proton launchers. The Frigate made a crash landing onto the planet and few Mandalorians survived. The Sun Guard Raider fleet was running low on fuel and torpedos having been engaged in cat and mouse with the Crusader ships and two of the three Yjak gunships were no longer available due to the damage they had sustained during combat. However one Crusader Class had been severely damaged by the three Yjak ships and had been limping it's way back to Séléann. The other ship had been running as it's escort to try and ferry it to safety of Séléann when the Nebolon Frigate was taken down in Orbit the two ships were thrown into disorder as the Justice and the remaining Yjak sped past to disgorge troops onto the planetary surface under the cover of it's shields and defences. The two Crusader ships however decided to answer the distress calls of their brothers and instead of regrouping with other forces turned about and charged towards Séléann.

VideoGameArt_MassEffect3_CrashedTurianShip01_MikkoKinnunen.000.jpg

Artyom and the Sun Guard dug their heels in and bombarded the two Crusader class vessels before one lay crippled in orbit. But the other managed to land relatively unscathed and it's crew rushed to the aide of their brothers who were being picked off one by one in terrible night raids on the Nebulon frigate. The Mandalorians found their commander alive on the ninth day since the raids began and two days since the Nebulon was brought down planet side. They hatched a plan to lead a day time assault on defence grid which housed control of the planetary defence systems. Regaining this would allow them to call for other reinforcements that could be in the sector the largest issue would be that it would be a long march up a mountain with little cover but there was little other choice, the Mandalorians believed this was part of a much larger assault to come and if they sent for reinforcements the path would need to be clear. At dawn the Mandalorians broke from their holding pattern around the Nebulon Frigate and advanced towards the defence grid. Their path was virtually unopposed for the first two days march. It seemed the Sun Guard had retreated but Artyom had instead decided to set about a terror campaign against the Mandalorians. As the Sun Guard retreated towards more easily defensible locations in the mountains they executed their Mandalorians captives in a series of increasingly gruesome ways. Their retreat was not well covered as the Justice had sustained a great deal of battle damage and was out of commission for the time being and they had only a single Yjak gunship operational to run any bombing. It was too big a target and it was only deployed during the night.

95936.jpg

The Mandalorians had to advance over a range of mountains from their crash site to reach the main defence grid. They were infuriated and enraged by the treatment of their comrades who had been tortured with many having their tongues cut out and scalped or shaven in the case of one female Wookie captive who had her reproductive system draped across her crucifix. It would be a six day slog for both forces to reach their objective with very little in the way of armour or speeders for the Mandalorians. Artyom had already made sure his supply lines were secure having his M3 Skywalkers ferry injured troops and supplies back and forth and the Sun Guard reached the Defence grid in just three days. On the second day of the march ordered a few sniper teams to wait behind in the mountains and take cover - wait for the Mandalorians to go past them and pick off those on supply runs and harass the main body. The Mandalorians could do nothing but endure this as to risk turning back would give the main body of the Sun Guard time to entrench themselves at the main defence grid station. Of course some Mandalorians did break off from the main body using their superior maneuverability and jet packs to hunt for the Sniper teams but it was largely futile and further demoralised the Mandalorians morale.

When the Mandalorian Protectorates reached the Defence grid like their Sun Guard counterparts they were both physically and mentally exhausted. There was little time for respite however and the battle cries went up "Mando'ad gra'tua!" the battle did not last long the Sun Guard had more time to rest and recover from their march than their opponents who attacked in wild frenzies and poorly coordinated assaults. The battle was close however and one Sun Guard squad and the Militia platoon did retreat during the fight on the right flank where most of the Mandalorians best soldiers were. Artyom saw that his defence would collapse and so ordered his center forces to charge head on at the oncoming Mandalorians. The result was a brutal close quarter battle in the maze of trenches and bunkers that made up the defence grids control center. The Mandalorians fought brutally because they knew that the fates awaited them if they did not win. Or worse if they were captured alive. The battle lasted just seven hours and it's conclusion was made when the Yjak gunship came in trails blazing and strafed the few secure Mando positions forcing them into the open where they were quickly cut down by the remaining Sun Guard and Militia. Artyom and the Sun Guard quickly executed the few survivors who could not kill themselves.

Despite being a relatively small and minor battle it was still one of Artyoms best and his most favoured to recall among the other Legionnaires as the Sun Guard and the Mando had been enemies for centuries. As the months went by Artyom became bored with the peace he had created. He was saved however when a messenger from Hutt Space told him that the Hutts had taken interest in his skills and that his payments had flown from the Cartel Space to keep these neutral systems from joining the new Manaan alliance or worse to become Mando staging areas. Intrigued Artyom decided to give up his position as Commander to a younger Praetor to work in a larger galactic arena. He ran a few jobs as a bounty hunter and hitman for the Cartels but his experience lay in planning and precision. He was a brutal man who could get the job done regardless of any "collateral damage" which is exactly what the Cartel looked for in an Kung or Familiar as a new recruit to the Cartel directly.

The "Recovering Pacifist Artyom has owned a "Jack" since his early days in the Thyrsians military. After the Sun Guard decided to rule over a small sect of worlds for the Cartels he was given the newly refitted "Recovering Pacifist" as a parting gift from the soldiers he had commanded.

That's not what Nor'baal meant.

The biggest ship a single character can own, even if he's the lord commander of an Indie faction, is a Freighter.

I am curious on how he got his hands on that capital ship, since PC characters are not allowed to own a capital ship. Something more that I am curious about is how did he manage to lure away the mandalorians from the planet, and how he managed to defeat them if their force was 3 to 4 times the size of his force. I know that you mentioned the usage of hit and run tactics, but wouldn't the mandalorians be rather quick to adapt to the type of combat wagered against them. Considering that the mandalorians are known as one of the most feared peopled in this galaxy for their ability to wage war, that and being amongst the deadliest warriors in the galaxy. While I am aware of the mandalorians decline in power during the timeskip, they will still be highly capable warriors capable of defeating many enemies.

Well I had hoped to KIND of get around htis by saying he does not own it just an A-B I had talked to Cass about giving him a fighter or something for single missions and I purposefulyl chose this ship because it was relatively insignificant (and also was cool looking)

So I'll edit that aye? I had said and hoped that by pointing out it comes under the command of someone else I could get around that a tad but fair doos !

Well something that is used in Clone Wars and TNG and numerous other Science Fiction is the use of Emergency distress calls I'm sure I could come up with something I've just finished a whole topic on the Opium Wars for History. The Mandalorians are a far greater force in the Galaxy no word of a lie there. That does not make them invincible and guys like Pre Visla and Jango show a certain ego of weakness if you ask me but if you wan't I'll detail it?

EDIT: Actually if you do I've thought of a far better battle to base it off, not sure if you are familiar with the Rastafarian Religion? But it comes from the first time an African Army defeated a European Colonial Army in the Italo-Ethiopian War but there were many other smaller conflicts that lead to the famous battle of Adwa :)

So... this is going to sound really mean... and I just mean to present this question to you as form of a challenge to the idea here.

This character is a Commander of an NPC faction? And as such has magically got 80 NPC's following him around? And a capital ship?
Sounds more like an Independant Faction, to me.

I think at best, you're going to walk away from this as a former-Sun Guard commander with... none of the assets you've listed here. As for a single PC character, with no ties to any [approved] factions this is completely, and utterly over the top as far as the resources this character has access to. Either form the Sun Guard into an indie faction, or nerf the bajesus out of this character.

Not at all Cass I don't mind doing that - also he's in the Hutt Cartel now :P problem is I doubt the Sunguard as a faction would get more than 3 members to become an indie faction due to general disinterest but fair doos!

Nerf herder time here it comes. :P

Oh I am very well aware that they are not invincible, non the less. If they had indeed been contracted to guard this planet, then why would they send all their ships to investigate a EDC? It doesn't make sense. They would most likely send a single recon ship that would investigate, and if they deemed that it was indeed a real distress call then they would probably send a single ship, not all ships to recover what was sending out the distress call.

Back to the topic of guys like Pre Vizla and Jango, they are characters created to satisfy a crowd with a mandalorian villain. At least according to me. In Vizlas case he is a cartoon character that displays typical weaknesses of a bad guy who thinks himself better then other, whilst Jango on the other hand got handed the short straw after his jetpack malfunctioned, bad luck in his case. Now I am not trying to deny that there are and will always be people who have a large ego that will become a weakness, but even so. There will most likely be other people around that one person that will try and set things straight, give advise to how to solve the issue.

As for the more detailed bit, I would love to see it written out like a story. It's wonderful to see people write long and detailed backgrounds for their characters, and this is a wonderful opportunity to write a really good story. What hardships did he have to face against when he tried to take the planet, did he loose any dear friends to the mandalorians? There is so much that can be told from that one battle, the battle where he took the planet from mandalorian warriors.

Also, I'd like to point out that the Thyrsus Sun Guard were from the Thyrsus Echani, whom were all dark of skin and dark of hair. Like the negative of the Echani. They wore thick armour and favoured heavy ranged weapons, while the standard Echani hated heavy armour, and adored melee weapons, and were pale of skin and hair. This guy looks more like a regular human than either sub-groups of Echani.

EDIT: Also, the Sun Guard were a Sith cult. Not sure why they'd be working for the Hutts instead of the Imperium.

Actually Kiro that isn't true in the Palpatine novels the Sun Guard are mixed race Echani and are theither Tyhchani which are the dark ones or regular and Carnor Jax father was a human and former Sun Guard I did do my homework before going down this route. Also I sort of thought this guy looked pale enough to pass *shrug* I had thought. Other than that it's pretty difficult to find male echani pictures that really fit inw ith how this guy was meant to look in my head and I thought it was passable.

"During the last century of the Republic, the Muun Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Plagueis employed a company of silver-armored Echani Sun Guards to provide security at his residence on the moon Sojourn, replacing the Iotran Brandsmen that had previously defended the world."

EDIT: They were a Sith Cult and before that they were generally just Force Worshipers is it really so difficult to believe the belief system might have evolved over the next thousand or so years?

Sure man I'd be happy to write this up - originally this was sort of meant as a sort of dickish NPC but actually you have given me quite a few ideas. It's part of the reason I rolled Personality and Background into one because I didn't want to spend forever on this guy like I did with my other characters. But you have me convinced I could make a lot more of this.

Having said that... Jango charged down onto that battlefield because of Ego. As for an entire fleet considering there are just 80 Sunguard (or were) were talking no more than a few ships contracted for a racketeering job like the British Royal Navy off the Ivory Coast was. I'll get to work on it and I'll let you know when I've finished it and see if it meets with your approval ayes?
