DESCRIPTION
The Y-8 was originally designed by the Corellian Engineering Corporation as something for their own mining operations. Due to their size and need for raw materials, the Corporation expanded into mining for their own materials rather than paying a third party for the same service. So they made the Y-8, designed as the ultimate in mining technology, equipped with a full array of lasers and a strong tractor beam for mining lucrative asteroid belts. As this was, initially, for in-house mining only they spared no expense, including making sure that it was equipped with heavy shielding for protection from pirates and meteors. Traditionally mining vessels would be equipped with lighter shielding, however the Corporation knew that their vessels would be a juicy target for pirates and less than legal actions taken by their competitors.
As the workhorse of CEC operations near Kashyyyk, the vessels were highly prized and protected but also rather exposed. Because of this exposure, the mining vessels were also equipped with a hyperdrive to give them better options when evading destruction or boarding. However, as they were traditionally used close to refinery operations, the hyperdrive was not given a lot of priority, allowing the Corporation to use lesser models of hyperdrive to cut down costs.
