It felt like a lifetime ago that Hauron Solus had visited Iziz with his clan mates. He had not seen or heard from Romeo in ages. The two of them had been there when an ex-Jedi had planted the seeds at the edge of the City of Iziz. Now he stood before the "sappling" Worshyyyr tree. The Forge Master was in disbelief at how much it had grown. The non-native flora was anything but small. The tree now stretched towards the sky so far that it rivaled the roofs of the nearest buildings.

Scores of people visited the tree daily even with the abominations still at large on Onderon. Some seemed to have an almost religious reverence for the humungous plant. The Mikkian think he understood. It made him feel safe and gave him a sense of hope. It was a symbol of life and perseverance against all odds. He was not force sensitive but a Jedi might even describe the sensation as a force nexus.

The city of Iziz had been defended once by himself and other Mandalorians along with a handful of Jedi. But the latest attack from the Sith had not been thwarted. Now non-native abominable creatures still prowled the jungles. It was for this reason that Hauron had come down from the hidden Mandalorian bases on Dxun. He had come armed for the job should he cross paths with the monsters and to lend his aid where it was needed.

The man was familiar with Kashyyyk flora and fauna. Rancor Squadron had a secret base on one of Kashyyyk's moons as well. He could tell just by looking that the tree was full of life and perhaps in a year or two it would be even more ridiculously grown. Hopefully the people of Iziz appreciated its presence and would refrain from trying to remove it, fearing it to be a threat to the safety of the walled city.

There were so many memories here for Hauron. It was not even his home. But he felt a kinship with the locals and wanted to ensure their survival.

Flanked on either side by his parents, Jaster stared ahead in mind-numbing boredom as they both attempted to explain the history of this worship-yer-sapling to him. Something something ex-Jedi. Something something light side. He didn’t know why it was such a big deal. It was a tree. It didn’t do anything. It couldn’t even survive without someone watering it every day.

He took a tiny step backwards, his eye having caught a tour group that was about to pass by behind them.

“It’s a symbol of hope to us all.” His father droned on. “A reminder that even in the darkest days… Jaster? Jaster, where are you?”

By then, their son was long gone, having managed to slip into the group undetected. When they moved far enough away, Jaster slowed his pace and let the group move on without him, leaving him standing with a few credits that he’d taken from someone’s pocket clutched in his palm. He grinned before dropping them into his own.

That was when something else caught his eye.

An armored man stood in front of the tree, a Mandalorian from the looks of it. Jaster’s eyes widened. He’d heard so many stories about them, played games pretending to be of the legendary warriors, but had never met one in real life. Whoa. Before he knew it, his feet had walked him over and he was standing to the side of the man.

“Soo coo,” Jaster said with a wide grin, in his best attempt at Mando’a that he had seen in holomovies. Was that even a real language? He hoped so, or else he’d look like an idiot. He stuck out his hand in an offer for a handshake. “I’m J. What’s your name?”

Hauron was lost in thought until his peripheral vision noticed a small figure approach and stare. His helmeted head turned to look at the green skinned child. His head then tilted to the side as the little one said something. It almost sounded like Mando'a but also may have just been trying to say "so cool".

When J, as they called themselves, stretched out a hand Hauron paused and looked at the tiny limb. But he turned to face the kid and dropped down to one knee in order to shake their hand closer to eye level. His big gloves practically engulfed J's hand. Is he a Mirialan? Hauron thought to himself. It did not appear to have any facial tattoos but then again he seemed quite young. "I'm Hauron."

A fully armored Mandalorian and a child talking in the middle of a public place drew some eyes. The Solus's helmet looked from side to side as he searched for the boy's parents. "Are you all by yourself, J?" Maybe the kid was an orphan or just got separated from some friends out having fun.

The child had to be about the same age as Larrik. Maybe next time he would bring the foundling. There were plenty of kids in Iziz without parents. Many of them would end up in Force knows what without support. Perhaps next time he would ask around Rancor Squadron if there were any families looking to adopt and point them in the city's direction.

When the Mandalorian kneeled down and accepted his handshake, Jaster nearly jumped in excitement. He couldn’t believe this was happening. He was meeting a real Mandalorian, and he was shaking his hand! The Mirialan didn’t even notice the heads that were starting to turn.

“Hauron.” Jaster echoed his name in wonder, looking into the Mandalorian’s visor. Was it true that they had all that complicated equipment in there? Was there x-ray vision? It didn’t look like it from the outside, but maybe Hauron could see right through him now.

He was brought back to the present when the Mandalorian asked him a question, though. At that, his eyes went up and to the left, unable to meet Hauron’s gaze.

“Uh… yeah.” He grinned a bit, looking back at the Mandalorian. “I’m alone!” But then he heard shouting from behind him.

“JASTER! JASTER!” He turned around to see his mother pacing about looking for him, with his father close behind. With them was a police officer. Jaster’s heart dropped, and his smile with it. He turned to Hauron urgently. He didn’t want his parents to interrupt him— not now!

“Um… could we… go someplace else? I think I’m going to be in trouble. Heh.” His eyes darted back and forth between his parents and Hauron, and he moved to the man’s other side in an attempt to hide himself.

The Forge Master nodded, confirming J had pronounced his name correctly. The man waited patiently for the child to answer and tried to not react to the blatant lie carelessly. As if to call him out on it, the sound of someone yelling a name rang out across the streets. Hauron did not know the young Mirialan's living situation but maybe he was just innocently trying to get some time to himself. Whatever the case, the Solus was not going to be responsible for kidnapping the kid.

"In trouble with who?" He asked softly, not trying to sound accusitory. Hauron was not annoyed that J had lied to him. Kids were innocent and he was probably was curious about the stranger from another world, from another way of life. If J was genuinely in trouble though Hauron was more than willing to help. But being called out on it was also going to reveal more of the truth.

Sure enough a pair of similar near-humans came into view through the crowd. J tried to hide behind the Forge Master from what he assumed were his parents, or at least relatives. Seeing the child take shelter behind a walking armory was probably a bit unnerving to say the least so Hauron gave a friendly wave to the approaching Mirialans and did not try to hide their son any more than he was hiding himself. "Are they your parents?" He asked J so that only he would hear.

Jaster looked the other way and shuffled his feet when Hauron questioned him a little further.

“Erm…” The shouting of his name was getting louder now, and he was sure that his parents had seen him by now. He turned around to see them running toward him, and Jaster let out a reluctant sigh as he saw his mother close in. He was going to be in for it now. He turned back to Hauron, nodding sullenly.

“Yeah, they’re my parents,” he admitted. As if to prove it, his mother practically tackled him with a hug while his father stopped a bit away to look at Hauron as he waved. Jaster couldn’t help noticing the conflict in his eyes.

“Thank you,” Ma said breathlessly to Hauron before planting a kiss at the top of Jaster’s head. The boy’s eye twitched at that.

“Yes, thank you,” Pa echoed, walking up behind Jaster to place a hand on his back. “I apologize if our son was giving you any trouble. He tends to… slip out of our view sometimes.” He gave Jaster a look, from which the boy shifted his gaze to the floor instead. This couldn’t be getting any worse. His own father was scolding him in front of the first Mandalorian he’d met!

“We don’t get many Mandalorians around here,” Pa continued, looking back at Hauron. “I hope we haven’t gotten in the way of your business.” His tone was friendly, but Jaster could tell that he was still a bit concerned. His father didn’t share his views about Mandalorians being the coolest beings in the galaxy, and though he had nothing against them, the presence of warriors likely meant that something was wrong. Especially with the number of abomination attacks still occuring around the city.

A look from his mother made Jaster turn his head to Hauron again.

“Yeah. Sorry,” he muttered, refusing to meet anyone’s gaze. Pa sighed before looking back at Hauron.

“If there’s anything we can help you with, we would be happy to.” The offer was genuine. “If you need directions, recommendations, anything… to thank you for bringing Jaster back.”

Hauron did not have X-ray vision but he was good at reading people. The kid was like an open book. The Mandalorian could think of a few pieces of advice for him but held off for the moment.

The Solus was glad to see the mother have the reaction she did to finding her son. J was probably too young to understand but he should be grateful for the family he had. At his age Hauron had already lost his biological parents.

"It's fine. He was no trouble at all, really. He has a curious mind. It's a good thing." If his helmet were off Hauron might have given J a wink.

Hearing J's apology the armored Mikkian knelt back down again, resting one of his gauntlets on his knee. "It's alright. You should listen to your parents though. Not everyone has such a loving family." There were a lot of kids in Iziz alone that were orphans. His own upbringing as a Mandalorian had been harsh to say the least. But he did not want to bring darkness into the child's life. "You brightened my day you know that? Thank you, Jaster." He said sincerely before standing back up again.

His T visor returned to eye level with J's parents. He hardly did anything other than talk with their son. "That's very kind of you. I hear that you have been having a bit of a monster problem as of late." Hauron remained mindful of J's presence, not wanting to scare the child with the details of how bad it really was. "You might be seeing more of me and my kind soon as a matter of fact. I hope you can extend the same hospitality towards them." The badger did not want to ask anything from the family. Hauron already knew his way around Iziz well enough already. He omitted the fact that hundreds of Mandalorians resided on Dxun presently. But it was true that they would be coming to Onderon, most likely with heavy weaponry to deal with the abominations.

"I actually have a foundling I've taken in. His name is Larrik and he's about your son's age." He looked at J before continuing. "Maybe the next time I visit I'll bring him and you two can get to know one another. I think he'd really like it here. Would you be okay with that?" Hauron asked both Jaster and his parents with the question. But he looked back at the other parents to gauge their response. Adults were better at hiding the truth and he wanted to know if they would prefer to keep their distance from Mandalorians.

Jaster puffed up one of his cheeks with air when Hauron kneeled down in front of him again, his gaze angled down to the ground.

“Mmm. I know,” he murmured, resigned. He knew what Hauron pointed out was true and that he should be grateful for what he had, and his cheeks turned hot with shame as he thought about how he’d tried to run away from his family earlier. But he looked up and met the Mandalorian’s gaze again when he mentioned that he had brightened his day. That made him feel a lot better.

“Really?” When he stood up again, Jaster had a smile of his own. “You made my day too.” By now his mother had gotten up again too, though she still held Jaster’s hand tightly with her own.

“Of course! Your people will always be welcome here,” she answered Hauron with a smile, along with the nod of her husband. The whole family knew that the Mandalorians were helping out in the defense against the abominations, but that was about the extent to which Jaster was aware of the situation. So he didn’t notice the darkening of his father’s gaze and instead only stared up at Hauron, imagining him standing on top of a mountain of monsters with a blaster in hand.

When Hauron mentioned that there was a foundling about his age though, Jaster forgot all about the monsters.

“YES!” he exclaimed excitedly, looking at Hauron before quickly turning to his parents. “PLEEEEEEEASE? Can I meet Larrik? Pleeeeeease?” Both parents exchanged a glance before Ma shrugged.

“I don’t see why not,” she said with a smile at Hauron, while Pa simply nodded. Jaster pumped a fist into the air, a wide grin spread across his face.

“YAY! You're the best!” He turned to Hauron again. In his excitement, he wrapped the Mandalorian in a hug. With his height, it was probably just his legs, but Hauron would know how excited he was nonetheless. It was only after his mother pulled him away that he let go, and she mouthed another “sorry” to Hauron.

Hauron was glad his armored appearance did not make the civilians uneasy. It was easy for the Forge Master to feel hopeful when he saw such a loving family. It was bittersweet to remember the few memories he had of his own biological family. Even his adoptive parents were not around.

The black helmed head bowed in thanks to the kindness Jaster's mother extended towards him. Not everyone was so receptive to mercenaries. Only when they were needed against a great threat were they tolerated. But hopefully the generosity continued even after the abominations were vanquished. The Mikkian caught the serious look in the father's face out of the corner of his eye but was unsure if it meant anything.

Hearing Jaster's excitement towards his first meeting with Larrik brought only good things to mind. The foundling would probably have the time of his life sharing what he knew and experiencing everything the City of Iziz had to offer. This could be the start of a great cultural exchange.

"Oh...uh..." Hauron was a bit surprised by the hug from the small Mirialan and gave an awkward chuckle. He used a gloved hand to pat the top of Jaster's head, ruffling his hair slightly. The Mandalorian could not help but keep an eye on the young one just in case the kid tried pickpocketing anything from him. Hauron was carrying a lot of weapons after all and other items of value he did not want to lose. It would not be the first time a tiny person tried stealing from him even if it was just innocent curiousity. He had a feeling that Jaster was the mischievous type that probably got into all sorts of trouble. Hauron shrugged towards Jaster's mother, playing it off like it was no big deal.

"I won't keep you from your family outing. Don't get into too much trouble. Take care." The Solus did not want to keep the family from whatever business they had that day. They probably wanted to have some quality time together so he left them to it.

With his arms wrapped around Hauron in a hug, Jaster’s first impulse was in fact to take something. But this was a Mandalorian, and anyone knew better than to steal from one of them. The boy didn’t want his hand to be cut off, or even worse, be embarrassed in front of Hauron when he got caught. Besides, he liked this man. He grinned when he ruffled his hair.

So, in the end, he didn’t try to take anything nor resist when his mother pulled him away. It was clear that Hauron had to go, and even if Jaster might have wanted him to stay a while longer, his parents knew that they all had their own business to get to.

“We don’t want to keep you either, sir. Thank you for letting us know where Jaster was. We’ll see you around,” Pa said respectfully with a small smile and nod while Ma herded Jaster over to his father. All the while though, the boy’s eyes were still on Hauron even as he was being dragged away.

“Wait! You will bring Larrik next time, right?” he asked before Ma shook her head at him. “What?!” Then, having no choice but to yell now as his parents pulled him further from Hauron and into the direction of who knew where, Jaster waved his free arm as a goodbye and called to him. “It was nice meeting you! Byeeeeee!”

As the crowd eventually blocked his sight of the Mandalorian and Jaster was allowed to walk on his own again, this time flanked even tighter by his parents, he looked back behind his shoulder. Still giddy with excitement, he hoped that Hauron would keep his word.

As they went further away from the tree, the throng of beings dissolved, revealing the road to home. Everything was so clear now.

“This is the way,” Jaster said happily, pointing ahead onto the sunlit street.
