Last week, the Pope lifted an excommunication order against a priest who preached that "Not a single jew died in a gas chamber" during the Second World War.

A few years ago, the Pope caused outrage when he blamed the Holocaust on a Nazi "gang."

He apparently thought it was a mafia clique in Berlin that murdered six million European Jews.

In 2006, he delivered a lecture at Regensburg in which he quoted a Byzantine text which characterised the Prophet Mohamed as evil and inhuman.
