DESCRIPTION
The Viper-class probe droid is an autonomous military reconnaissance platform originally manufactured by Arakyd Industries for the Galactic Empire. Vipers can be used for any number of applications, from long-range scouting over interstellar distances using single-use hyperdrive-equipped deployment pods, to local patrol and sentry duty at garrisons or other important facilities. In Imperial service, they were used for everything from scouting out Rebel Alliance bases on frozen Outer Rim planets to monitoring the behavior of workers at Imperial ship-breaking facilities.

Vipers are complex machines, fitted with a host of sophisticated sensory equipment and useful tools. Vipers are capable of surveying a wide swath of territory, using a repulsorlift system for mobility. Equipped with a long-range communication suite, the droid can keep in touch with its masters many parsecs away. In general, Vipers will accumulate data and transmit it in large encrypted blocks.

Viper-class probe droids, although primarily used for reconnaissance and monitoring, can be employed as light combat units, essentially functioning as over-sized seeker droids. They are armed with a medium blaster, located in a small turret on the main body.

Upon completion of its mission, the Viper can return to its base, signal for retrieval, or alternatively be instructed to use its self-destruct charge, which detonates the droid with the force of a standard grenade. This self-destruct charge will also be automatically triggered should the Viper's programming detect imminent capture or other interference. A Viper's self-destruct charge can be detonated prematurely by a well-placed blaster shot.

Although the Empire is long gone, Viper-class probe droids do still see use, and are still manufactured by Arakyd, although more modern classes of probe droid with superior capabilities are starting to make them obsolete.
