"The Shadow World"
"Umbara, known as the "Shadow World" due to the rays of its sun never completely reaching its surface, is perpetually dark.
The native wildlife have adapted to survive in such gloom, making the planet perpetually dangerous."
Galactic Coordinates: P-10
Hyperlane: Great Kashyyyk Branch (Researcher's note: usually bypassed due to difficult astrogation conditions inherent within the Ghost Nebula)
Planet Type: Terrestrial
Terrain: Majority of the surface covered in rolling hills and thick flora
Climate: Climate difficult to measure due to unique atmospheric conditions (Researcher's Note: the climate generally seems to be within comfort limits of most species; perhaps due to greenhouse effects generated by the flora and stratosphere/exospheric layers?)
Rotation/Day-Night Cycle: 32 Galactic Standard Hour day, 413 local day orbit. Perpetual state of near darkness due to solar and atmospheric conditions theoretically caused by the Ghost Nebula

Inhabitants:
Humanoid (note: further genetic classification=Near-Human) Umbarans are the sentient species native to the planet; with a population of roughly three billion (3,000,000,000). The Umbaran species includes males and females, with uniformly pale bluish-white skin, and the ability to see into the ultraviolet spectrum. While Umbarans are capable of growing hair, many are clean shaven as a result of job requirements or mere personal preference. Some Umbarans are rumored to exhibit minor extrasensory mental abilities, in particular persuasive powers--however this has been speculated only to occur with at least some degree of Force sensitivity.

There are many examples of flora and fauna on the surface of Umbara, most capable of emitting light due to naturally occurring bioluminescence. Examples of predatory life on Umbara includes the Vixus: a stationary, multi-tentacled monstrosity that shares common traits with species such as Sarlaccs and Rathtars. Another predator common on Umbara is the pseudo-avian Banshee, which swoops down upon its prey with a chilling howl and flash of bioluminescent emissions--most predators utilize these emissions to attract prey or intimidate opponents during territorial disputes.

Resources: Umbaran natural resources are vital to the maintenance of the high-tech society established by the native sentient species; most of these resources are utilized for standard galactic construction purposes. There are particular gases and biological substances gathered from flora and fauna used in some Umbaran equipment. However, demand has risen for a larger variety of materials, inviting Umbaran trade ventures into the galactic markets, particularly into Hutt Space.

Government:
Technocratic Meritocracy with Socialist elements. The government of Umbara resides in the capital city, The Presidium, with representation from all of Umbaran society including the main castes: the Politburo, the Technocracy, the Mercantile, and the Martial Corps.

Culture: Umbaran society is based on a merit system in which individual Umbarans serve the Umbaran people as a collective. Individuality is by no means suppressed, but the betterment of the people is deemed greater than the success of the individual--or so it is stressed in the education system. Performance in rigorous tests helps determine the role of an individual in society; efforts are made to encourage progression in the path in which younglings are most competent and enjoy. The strata of society is varied into groupings related by profession. These "castes" are not binding, in fact, overlap is expected and in some instances full transfers of jurisdiction and individuals. There are many sub-castes within Umbaran society; the main castes are:

The Politburo, which includes Umbarans involved in the political affairs of the planet--from the Umbaran Premier and other rulers or ambassadors to the members of the sprawling bureaucracy. The highest echelon of the Poliburo is the supreme governing body of Umbara.

The Technocracy is related to all things regarding the unique advanced scientific research and development on Umbara--this caste is the most exclusive and may perhaps hold the most merit. The Technocracy is also responsible for the study of imported technology and occasionally send ventures along with Mercantile trading expeditions to directly interact and study alien technology in its "natural environment."
Addendum: Elements constituting a sub-caste of the Technocracy have developed a fascination bordering obsession with the Force and all things Force related. Study of Umbaran Force sensitivity prior to exposure to the Jedi and Sith was largely performed by this echelon. This echelon is proactive in attempting to discover Force sensitive Umbarans and interact regularly with Jedi and Sith both on Umbara and more frequently in the greater galaxy. Republic skeptics believe they led a strong argument in the establishment of the Shadow Academy operated as a joint Umbaran-Sith venture.

The Mercantile is the newest addition to the Umbaran social system. The merchants and traders of the Mercantile are responsible for the development and maintenance of economic ties with other species and governments. While the Politburo has oversight to the activities of the Mercantile, they are primarily left to their own devices regarding even state-sponsored trade deals. Uniquely, the vast majority of the Mercantile speaks Basic; along with a number of other wide spread languages, such as Huttese.

The Martial Corps is the extremely dedicated and highly trained Umbaran defense force. While the Martial Corps is numerically extremely large, only a small rotating selection of units are active during peacetime. The overwhelming majority of the Martial Corps are ground troops trained in planetary defense and security. The Umbaran Strategic Atmosphere Command operates only in the confines of the Umbaran System and the Ghost Nebula. The SAC utilizes small combat spacecraft of a unique Umbaran design as the primary means of system defense; along with seven corvette and three frigate class vessels. The SAC rotates crews on these vessels to maximize trained personnel on larger vessels. The Umbaran Shadow Brigades are elite special forces units and are the only permanently mobilized units of the Martial Corps. The Shadow Brigades are the only official Umbaran units authorized to conduct operations outside the Ghost Nebula; this includes assignments such as ambassadorial security to intelligence gathering. Many Shadow Brigade troopers are graduates of the Shadow Academy, or its nearest Umbaran equivalent course in Planetary Defense Center: Nystranos

The official Umbaran policy is fairly isolationist, but not quite xenophobic. Rarely do low caste Umbarans leave their world and typically most speak only Umbaran, while the higher echelons of the castes learn Galactic Basic for interaction. Ambassador and higher Politburo echelons are required to speak Basic; while only the Xeno-Researchers of the Technocracy generally learn the language. The Mercantile is the only caste to incorporate mandatory language education at lower echelons in increase the number of potential traders. The Martial Corps requires only the officers of the SAC and all troopers of the Shadow Brigades to speak Basic. Shadow Brigade troopers are encouraged to learn to comprehend three or more additional languages for interaction and coordination with potential allies--Mando'a and Huttese are common supplements. Shadow Brigade troopers are also assigned to certain details (ambassadorial guard, intelligence) on a linguistic basis.

The Umbaran Language in written form
Researcher's Note: While the Umbaran caste system may seem monolithic at first glance, this perception primarily functions as a facade, a psychological weapon in the arsenal of the Umbaran government. Since the advent of wider interaction with mainstream galactic society, Umbarans have spread to the corners of known civilization. Some Umbarans born off-world consider their heritage useless, despite the official government policy of welcoming such individuals into Umbaran society. It is not unheard of to see Umbarans in all strata of galactic societies operating completely independently from any form of Umbaran policy.

Technology: The Umbarans utilize an advanced level of technology, developed in near isolation from the rest of the Galaxy. Most of the technology has comparable equivalents in the galaxy at large, but some items are specific to Umbara. Two of the most interesting examples of unique Umbaran technology exhibited by the Martial Corps are the Haunter -Class super-STAP/strikefighter and suits of light combat-envirosuit armor. The armor suit has several variants that all provide Umbaran Martial Corps troopers with basic protection, a secure envirosuit and is capable of utilizing a unique gas that enhances trooper combat effectiveness.
Researcher's Note: The quasi-isolationist trend of the Umbaran government has limited exportation of large quantities of Umbaran technology, however several parties have expressed interest in the Haunter. Conversely, the Umbaran Technocracy is extremely interested in the acquisition of alien tech for study and encourages the Mercantile to actively trade with imports in mind.

Satellites: Umbara has one small moon, Synestra, a barren rock. Synestra is host to the main system defense headquarters of SAC and is also used for extreme-condition combat training exercises (i.e. vacuum and extravehicular). The headquarters and port facilities are insulated by force-fields and employs artificial gravity at the same rate as Umbara allowing personnel to function free of envirosuits. Additional planetary bodies in the Umbaran system are four (4) gas giants
Researcher's note: Ironically, the moon receives more sunlight than the planet, due to the fascinating atmospheric conditions of Umbara.
Addendum:There are a few commercial and military artificial satellite arrays in orbit around Umbara, most are relays to communication networks or listening posts scattered throughout the Ghost Nebula. The SAC operates a small manned space station for space traffic control, with secure links to The Presidum and the lunar SAC base.
latest

One of many Umbaran bases scattered throughout the Ghost Nebula, this one is similar in design to the one on Synestra. The Synestra base is highly classified and images are rare. However, eyewitness interviews recount that the base is much larger with port facilities for at least two frigates or four corvettes at a given time.

History: The origins of Umbara are lost to the realm of myth. The Umbaran genetic classification of "Near-Human" has led to some (currently) unfounded speculation in academia that Umbarans are descended from an ancient expedition of Humans lost in the Ghost Nebula and diverged from base genetic stock due to isolation in conjunction with possible forced evolution as a result of external stimuli. Umbarans unified into a singular planetary government fairly early and adopted the technocratic meritocracy system in use today. It is unknown if space travel was re-invented (IF the various lost colony theories are correct) or if the Umbarans merely elected to remain close to the confines of the Ghost Nebula. Some scout craft did leave Umbaran space on exploration missions; it is speculated that these early expeditions are responsible for the establishment of Umbarans in small numbers in the Republic and the Sith Domains. It is also speculated these expeditions resulted, or were instrumental, in the establishment of the Mercantile as a societal entity.
The Umbaran Politburo officially sent emissaries to the Republic and Sith Domains at the behest of the Technocracy and burgeoning Mercantile to seek greater resources than available in the Umbaran System and the Ghost Nebula. The Martial Corps initially protested this move, urging the more conservative continuation of isolationism. The emissaries were successful in their official contact mission and the Republic and Sith sent envoys to The Presidium as full time ambassadors. The Republic established an embassy within The Presidium, but the Sith were currently in the midst of the throes of internecine conflict and required a different venue. Eventual compromise between the Umbaran government and the Sith factions resulted in the creation of the Shadow Academy, a temple of Sith design considered neutral ground among the factions. Moderated by Umbarans of the Technocracy, the temple flourished as a place renowned for the study of the Force, martial skills, stealth techniques and functioning as de facto embassy of the Sith to the Umbara. In recent times the Sith Brotherhood has emerged as the sole Sith faction residing in the Shadow Academy.
The resumption of hostilities and the rise of the Border Alliance has resulted in an large diversion in Umbaran politics. The Mercantile, seeks to see the Umbarans side with the Republic and increase export of Umbaran goods to galactic markets. The Martial Corps, although bound to the dictates of the Umbaran Politburo, has abandoned the request for extreme isolationism and now wishes to have closer ties to the Border Alliance for mutual aid and security among nearby sectors while retaining independence. The majority of the Technocracy is now adamantly in the conservative isolationist camp; with the argument that the current status quo is acceptable but no more expansion of galactic ties. The exceptions among the Technocracy in this regard are members of the echelon dealing with the Force--many Technocrats believe this is due to exposure to the Dark Side energies channeled in the walls of the Shadow Academy. The wish of the Technocrat minority echelon to join with the Sith is not unheard within the structure of the Politburo itself; as ties between the Umbaran government and the Sith Brotherhood have indeed strengthened as a result of the joint venture. The eventual fate of the Umbaran people remains to be determined...

Interesting Locations on Umbara:
The Presidium

latest
The Umbaran capital is known as The Presidium. It is home to the highest echelons of the Politburo, Technocracy, Mercantile and the Martial Corps supreme headquarters. The Presidium is the largest spaceport on Umbara and the number one location for acquisition of Umbaran export goods. The Republic Embassy is located in The Presidium, near the governmental offices of the Politburo.

The Republic Embassy
EP2_IA_656881-1088x816.jpg
The Republic Embassy (building with the spotlight) is one of the largest structures in The Presidium. It is home to the Republic delegation of ambassadors and military attaches. The embassy has a private landing pads for shuttles and a hangar bay capable of supporting a few small light freighters or passenger vessels. The embassy is known for hosting some of the largest exhibitions and festivities in The Presidium, in an effort to woo the Umbarans to the Republic banner.
Addendum: At the behest of the Umbaran government, the Jedi Order is permitted to utilize a section of the embassy for its own purposes--the Jedi have no permanent delegation as Jedi-Umbaran ties have never been officially established.

The Shadow Academy
latest
Located 300 kilometers away from The Presidium, the Shadow Academy is a joint venture of the Umbaran government and the Sith Brotherhood. The Shadow Academy was born from the attempts of the Umbaran government to established ties with the Sith, however during this period the Sith were rife with in-fighting and the Umbarans were unsuccessful in their efforts. The eventual resolution was the Shadow Academy--a temple of Sith design to function as a neutral ground among rival Sith factions. The temple soon gained infamy for studies into stealth and combat; techniques the Umbaran natives performed almost naturally. Umbaran and Umbaran-trained Shadow Assassins who studied at the Academy are renowned for their skill and subtlety. An echelon of the Technocracy monitors and studies the progress made in the Academy, sometimes even providing Force-sensitive Umbarans for training in the Sith arts. Interesting to note: not all trainees are Sith Lord or Jedi Master material, even warriors with minor Force sensitivity are trained as extensively as possible. Almost all trainees who survive their education show marked improvement in stealth combat techniques--this has resulted in several highly capable guardsmen and snipers. Eventually the Shadow Academy began to function as the de facto embassy of the Sith Brotherhood, hosting visiting Lords of the Sith and military attaches from the Sacred Band of Ziost. The Academy is connected by a rapid transit rail system to The Presidium (300km SE of the capital) and has a landing pad and additional hangar for small Sith vessels.

While the Presidium may be the main spaceport and hub of the Umbaran government, the City of Matutinus in the North-Eastern Hemisphere is rapidly becoming the most bustling trade port on Umbara. Matutinus operates as a free-port, with alien travel encouraged, while much of Umbara remains under tight alien travel regulations. Home to many members of the Mercantile, Matutinus hosts the largest non-Umbaran population on the planet, surpassing The Presidium. The Mercantile operates most of the marketplaces in Matutinus, but encourages foreign traders of all types to establish shops and trade depots within the ever expanding city limits. This same invitation extends towards even vendors of otherwise questionable reputation and goods; this has led to Matutinus becoming one of the newest "shadowports." Matutinus has acquired a reputation as a middle ground for galactic black market deals; to counter this image the Martial Corps maintains tightened security with several units stationed in the city and several surrounding airbases. Due to Mercantile requests approved by the Politburo, the Martial Corps is under orders not to interfere with any legitimate business deals and crack down on black markets; in reality some lower echelons of the Mercantile foster the growing "secondary market" trend as simply yet another avenue of trade. The city is undergoing a massive construction boom, and is expected to become the most populated city of Umbara and largest spaceport within the next decade--however, the growth of Matutinus is growing increasingly dependent on the successes or failures of the Republic-leaning Mercantile caste in Umbaran politics.

Planetary Defense Center
latest
Umbara is covered with many military centers that maintain their ground forces and atmospheric/system defense fighter corps. The primary headquarters is located to the north-west of the capital and appears as a much larger variant of the same general format utilized in the other bases. Practically a military city; Planetary Defense Center: Nystranos is the most fortified point in the Umbaran system. While the majority of Umbaran bases are configured as platforms for launching fighter strikes and maintaining and stockpiling equipment for ground troops; the Nystranos is equipped with heavy turbolaser turrets and experimental ion cannons. Some of the areas of the base are equipped with shield arrays but the primary defense is far more traditional. The vast majority of the complex is underground, which includes hydroponic farms, military-industrial equipment and the best power generators crafted by Umbaran science--Nystranos is to be the final redoubt of the Umbaran government in the event of a planetary invasion. While the Presidium is the second most fortified area on Umbara; doctrine dictates that the government will flee to Nystranos if a situation requires.
Nystranos is the home of the Shadow Brigades and the embarkation point for many of their missions--as such Nystranos is not completely off-limits to outsiders. Visitors are mainly restricted to the airbase hangars, landing field and main above ground administrative complexes. Military attaches from all factions are usually given a tour of Nystranos in a "show of force" showing the general quality of Umbaran troops and vehichles in an attempt to dissuade potential aggression. However, despite this apparently open policy, movement by unauthorized personnel into restricted zones is punishable by death (after trial--barring armed resistance to capture results in fatality), extradition (which includes an additional banishment edict) and diplomatic nightmares.

INTENT: To create a broader society for Umbaran characters to potentially draw upon--current Wookiepedia and StarWars.com Database entries are largely insufficient in terms of actual substance for backstory. This is an attempt to create a credible, engaging, and fun world of opportunity Umbaran characters can either refer to or simply ignore based on story preference.
The Umbara displayed in this profile does venture pretty far into "Fanon" territory, with as much canon avaliable incorporated into elements of old Legends (EU) or completely created material based on the spirit of both. Custom creations include: Day/Year length, Society and Government, elements of Culture, the Umbaran military, the moon Synestra and accompanying base and outposts in the Ghost Nebula, adaptations to the Umbaran Capital City and the locations.
The overall goal is to establish groundwork for a potential story-arc thread involving the political alignment of the Umbarans with the opportunity of involvement of all interested parties. Platform to eventually introduce various Umbaran technologies to the SWRP universe.

Hello! Could you rewrite this into a purely informational OoC profile? I'd like to be more clear on the substance of this profile rather than anecdotes and that kind of stuff. Also, if you plan for your character to use special technologies like these, you will have to write a tech profile for them as well. Thank you!

Hello! Could you rewrite this into a purely informational OoC profile? I'd like to be more clear on the substance of this profile rather than anecdotes and that kind of stuff. Just a heads up: I am still working out what I want to do with this one: this was a test-run to see if there was any interest in Umbara and its denizens. I posted the planet itself in order to find out if sufficient interest warranted time investment into delving into the requisite tech profiles--as of yet, interest seems fairly lacking.

In terms of rewriting the whole thing, honestly--knowing that some people take counter-proposals as "arguing/backtalking with/to an admin" which is quite literally the last thing I want do on this site--I would rather not rewrite it, but instead add a TL;DR (too long, didn't read) synopsis with all the vital information at the top, so it would be the first thing you'd see with all the "substance of the profile" you require. I'd prefer to keep the "anecdotes" for actual world-building. I wrote it in the format of an in-universe, fairly impartial, semi-academic, "Wookiepedia" (I was thinking Obroa-skai back in the good ol' days :)) just for an interesting perspective; I'd like to keep it that way, but since the information in the synopsis will not be long at all, it will not have an impact on the material.

If the above is not acceptable, we can definitely work something out. However, given the general lack of interest, which I hoped would help me craft some elements better, I'm pretty disappointed with it overall, so I may scrap it and come back to this another day ;).

If anyone has helpful, constructive, ideas please post them--otherwise I'm probably going to ask for archival due to lack of interest :(.

Congratulations on your appointment to the admin league :)!
P.S. If it isn't too much trouble, some admins bold rulings, which is helpful and limits "misinterpretation" of comments. If you don't mind, could you do that here if necessary?

My rulings are now bolded. That was also a ruling. Thank you for congratulating me xP.

Anyways, sure, a TL;DR would work as far as I am concerned. Also, you will have to be more specific on the resources. Another thing I have mixed feelings about is the Shadow Academy. I do not really see a reason for it to exist. As a concept to train assassins, I like it, but you made it that Force Sensitives are trained there, which gives me a feeling of them being Sith-but-not-really. Force users are powerful individuals and having a planet (not a faction) training them feels like it could really tip the balance and fairness, one way of another.
