Tynian brought his weapon vertically to his right, catching the blade and then using the momentum to push it down and away from him (and hopefully pinning it against the ground), then he brought the lower end of his lightsaber horizontally across toward the Jedi Master’s chest.

He tried to focus on the next move after that, but he found himself going back to the defensive and reactive side of things. So he pulled back hesitantly, like he wasn’t sure what he should do next...

As Tynian's blade caught his own, he rapidly deactivated and reactivated his blade to let Tynian's arm sail past, the blade that would have pinned him now on his outside. Vollen directed his blade at Tynians arm, and would move to slash down at it. He was avoiding big moves, trying to use as little energy and movement in this fight. Vollen was more practiced at defensive maneuvers, so he used it to his advantage. And from watching the other fights, hopefully it would be a different type of fight for Tynian to practice against,

"Good attempt at following up, but there was a way around it. You just need to be ready for when there is" he offered as guidance. There was only so much one could teach about battle, sometimes it really did only come down to practice. And he was more than happy to offer that.

Tynian witnessed first hand the "way around his attack". It never occurred to him that he could do that. He stored that move in his memory for future use.
"I notice you are using very short movements. How can I do that with a double- bladed lightsaber. I seems to have to rely on bigger movements all the time."
He was more used to larger swing and attacks, so the smaller stuff was a bit more foreign to him...

"Well you don't always have to be using both blades extended. Start with one, surprise an attacker if they forget, there are plenty of options available. A swipe with a follow through might be more powerful, but not faster, and vice versa" Vollen put his blade down, though still ignited, as he tried to guide Tynian through. The knights choice of blade was an uncommon one, and one Vollen himself had little experience in, but there were options there surely, and that was half of combat: knowing realistic options, how to use them. Vollen himself had enough experience in the unrealistic that he thought it good to counsel now the opposite,

"Better you know the outcome of your attacks then confuse and over do yourself. I've done that myself" and probably would again, if he knew himself at all. Perhaps one day he'd take his own advice better. For now though, sharing what he knew was enough,

"Let's try something like that then. Counters. I'll move, block and counter" he offered warmly. It was hard to be in bad spirits, even if he was on Jedha. The sun was out and he was in the company of his peers. That was something good.

Vollen went for a simple stab, right at Tynian's belly. He'd be interested to see what the knight would do.

Tynian listened to the instruction given by Master Shai and then raised his weapon.

As the Master's blade came at his mid-section, he blocked it with his right blade and then countered toward the Master's neck with his left blade. He was fairly certain that Vollen could block the swing, but he wasn't trying to hit him... he was trying to learn from him.
"So my lightsaber would allow me to keep going from right to left, but it does leave me open in the middle I think." Tynian stated as he felt his attack left him open for a killing shot right at his chest.

Vollen watched as Tynian threw up his blade in defence and counter. Good to see the knight picking it up. There are times when only defence matters, and times to strike back. With two blades it was easier to do both, though a free hand would have its advantages,

“Good” He met his companions stroke with a smile, he flicked his blade up from the centre to cross his face and hold off Tynians other blade. With his free right hand Vollen would channel a small bit of kinetic energy and pop it into Tynians chest,

“But keep thought on other ways your opponent might attack. With a second hand your opponent might launch there own attack, just as you had. And with your own blade locked it’s harder to defend a blade attack. And with two hands holding onto the blade it’s harder to channel the force in defence” he instructed. He was trying to guide the knight, get him to think of all the many options that might be thrown at him. That was often enough anyhow, just to know if these options, the way enemies might come at you, kept you ready for more fights ahead,

“My little push, if it had been a bigger one what might you have done, what’s your next move if it had pushed you back, and broke our lock. Follow up attack? Defend against the blast?”

Tynian thought for a moment. “Well in the past, I’ve always stepped back to regroup for some reason. I could press the attack again, but wouldn’t I be met with the same result?”
Tynian thought of something else as well. “Do we always have to use our hands to use the force in that way? What I mean is, since both of my hands are busy holding my weapon, can’t I figure out an alternative way of using the force?”

"Not necessarily, no. Master Fennex can channel the force through his tail and I've faced that down myself. One might channel it through other limbs, or even through a hand that is clenched upon something else. But the amount of focus, finesse, and the variety of manipulations of the force you might be able to do will become limited, so there's a trade off" Vollen replied thoughtfully. It was a good question, and well thought,

"Some powers are merely through thought as well, though the use of our body helps us channel it, and the freedom and clarity of movement our hands allow us helps focus that, and so they're certainly preferable, but not essential" he repled with a smile. It was so simple, so default for a Jedi to interact with the force like that that it was a good reminder to himself as well that there were more ways than that to fight,

"But it's a good question, and exactly the kind of thing I wanted you to focus on. Think of the opportunities, the possibilities, that's what will help you win the day Tynian" Vollen finished, deactivating his lightsaber. It was hard to know what else to teach the boy, so much came from practice rather than words anyhow. But training like this was good for he and the knight both,

"It's always my pleasure to teach you though, should you ever seek it"

Tynian bowed politely to the Jedi Master. He would have a lot to work on in the future... “I am deeply grateful for your teaching my today Master Vollen. I will be working on what you’ve taught me you have my word.”

The Jedi hung his lightsaber onto his belt and looked at the other Jedi present. He had learned quite a bit from them already. And the daylight was almost gone. Yet there remained one more Jedi that he hadn’t learned from yet... Master Zeerda.

Tynian took about five minutes for a breather and then looked at Master Fennex.

“I am ready when you are Master Zeerda.”
