Evie was basking in the shade and staring dreamily at her own shadow when it seemed to split and double. Her brow wrinkled but her eyes remained on the ground when she heard a familiar voice. Her muscles stiffened, she stood upright, eyes wide but still lacking the courage to turn and face the owner.
“Eeicia.” She whispered.
She bit her lower lip, let it slide free and slowly bowed her head , raising it again only as she turned to face her twin.
“ I shouldn’t have left you…” She said, “Eeicia I want to-”
She froze.
It was as if Eeicia wasn’t before her at all but an actress playing her, something “not Eecia” but wearing her body like a costume.
Evie’s mouth grew stiff, a nervous smile beneath her wet, wide eyes.
She looked at the pistol, at her sister’s face and back again before her expression faded into wretchedness.
“ Oh….no.”
The last time she’d seen the woman standing in front of her it was 4 years ago.
In a hospital near home…
Screams were echoing the halls and sending all who heard them into dread.
The distinctive sounds of agony.
Their mother was holding her mouth shut outside the hall with a damp tissue and shutting her eyes so tight it looked painful to sustain.
Evie was there beside their father who was squeezing her wrist so hard it left a mark.
“maybe I should go in.” He would say turning to their mother.
She would only shake her head silently each time he would suggest it.
Nurses began to enter and leave the room like clock work until Mr. Evie spoke up.
He stopped a young woman and asked “ What’s going on? How bad are her burns?”
“She’s screaming,” his wife chimed in anxiously “Why is she screaming? He said she was fine-”
The nurse looked past them, As if speaking to Stasha directly.
“Its not the burns we’re worried about.”
It was hours before Eeicia Emerged and when she did...
Lost in the memory Evie stood frozen.
The sudden presence of her sibling had brought about a stir of emotion she hadn't expected;
fright.
