The sounds of the forest were their own private chorus as Kyp and Altina made their way away from the temple. Today, her training would begin in earnest. Kyp did not know much about what he was doing, not yet, but he knew his basics, and he would begin there. A good grasp on the fundamentals was always a good place to begin. The sun had not yet risen over them, and so they were draped in the heavy darkness of the early morning gloom under the tree canopy. It would be good for them to disappear from the temple for now, somewhere that Altina could practice without fear, without worry.
He had arrived for her an hour previously, waking her earlier than most might expect, or desire. no time for worrying over appearances, for few were awake, he had said, and he had beckoned her to come with him, moving at a brisk walk through the temple. He did not speak aside from providing directions to her or from gentle urging for her to hurry and follow him. He remembered his Master having taken him away like this as well, sending him off to meditate on his own for days at a time, barely any food or water to sustain him. "The Force is the only nourishment you will need, my young Padawan." Or so his master had been fond of reminding him. It had taken him a few very hungry days until he understood what his Master had meant.
"Come, Padawan. We have much to do, and we have little time, we must get you ready lest the Force call us to action before you are prepared." He was moving swiftly, not watching where he was going, trusting in the force to guide the placement of his feet. Or was it the hint of peripheral vision? Either way, he found himself sure footed, but he knew his padawan would need to be more careful. By the time he was done training her, he would have her ready to run through the crowded forest without worry. Without even looking, if he had his way. She would not find his training easy, he knew that much. She probably would not thank him, she might even curse him at the end of every day, but he was sure that at least for now, this was the right way to spend every day they had for training. What she would not see were the nights he would spend sleepless either in the libraries researching how to help her, or the nights when he would be tossing and turning in his spartan quarters, haunted by fears of failing her.
He had always know that the Master-Apprentice bond would be difficult, but he had not expected this, and he was not sure if he was ready, if he would ever be ready. But, he had resolved that first meeting that he would do his all for her. He continued on in silence, not answering any questions she might have. He wanted her to have the chance to concentrate, for in time, he would be leading her down these paths, barraging her with questions, forcing her to fight, or other varieties of distractions. After all, that was to be the first skill they would develop in her, the ability to hone her focus and concentration, to recognize, but also ignore, the distractions.
The walk lasted another half an hour or so, but they finally stopped. Kyp came to a halt deep in the forest and sat down on a fallen log, and motioned to one across from him. "Sit, Padawn, cross your legs, and tell me, what do you know of the Force?" And with that, her training began.
