The sounds of the forest were their own private chorus as Kyp and Altina made their way away from the temple. Today, her training would begin in earnest. Kyp did not know much about what he was doing, not yet, but he knew his basics, and he would begin there. A good grasp on the fundamentals was always a good place to begin. The sun had not yet risen over them, and so they were draped in the heavy darkness of the early morning gloom under the tree canopy. It would be good for them to disappear from the temple for now, somewhere that Altina could practice without fear, without worry.

He had arrived for her an hour previously, waking her earlier than most might expect, or desire. no time for worrying over appearances, for few were awake, he had said, and he had beckoned her to come with him, moving at a brisk walk through the temple. He did not speak aside from providing directions to her or from gentle urging for her to hurry and follow him. He remembered his Master having taken him away like this as well, sending him off to meditate on his own for days at a time, barely any food or water to sustain him. "The Force is the only nourishment you will need, my young Padawan." Or so his master had been fond of reminding him. It had taken him a few very hungry days until he understood what his Master had meant.

"Come, Padawan. We have much to do, and we have little time, we must get you ready lest the Force call us to action before you are prepared." He was moving swiftly, not watching where he was going, trusting in the force to guide the placement of his feet. Or was it the hint of peripheral vision? Either way, he found himself sure footed, but he knew his padawan would need to be more careful. By the time he was done training her, he would have her ready to run through the crowded forest without worry. Without even looking, if he had his way. She would not find his training easy, he knew that much. She probably would not thank him, she might even curse him at the end of every day, but he was sure that at least for now, this was the right way to spend every day they had for training. What she would not see were the nights he would spend sleepless either in the libraries researching how to help her, or the nights when he would be tossing and turning in his spartan quarters, haunted by fears of failing her.

He had always know that the Master-Apprentice bond would be difficult, but he had not expected this, and he was not sure if he was ready, if he would ever be ready. But, he had resolved that first meeting that he would do his all for her. He continued on in silence, not answering any questions she might have. He wanted her to have the chance to concentrate, for in time, he would be leading her down these paths, barraging her with questions, forcing her to fight, or other varieties of distractions. After all, that was to be the first skill they would develop in her, the ability to hone her focus and concentration, to recognize, but also ignore, the distractions.

The walk lasted another half an hour or so, but they finally stopped. Kyp came to a halt deep in the forest and sat down on a fallen log, and motioned to one across from him. "Sit, Padawn, cross your legs, and tell me, what do you know of the Force?" And with that, her training began.

To say that Altina slept better since she was assigned a master would be a complete misstatement. Her condition had not improved at all since her tenure as Master Eridan's pupil began. But she could not place blame on her teacher, since they had just started her training. Perhaps for someone who slept better at night, waking up early would have induced groaning and mumbling, but not to Altina. She had only been able to doze for what felt like minutes at a time before being woken by a ghostly sound or voice.

Of course she questioned Master Eridan's intent on collecting her at an unusual hour, but followed after him regardless. Anything felt better than hiding in her room and allowing her unending visions to torment her.

That was not to say that she was pleased with following her master into the dark forest. Altina struggled to keep pace: bumping into every branch and scraping by every bush. As she climbed over a particularly large tree root, Altina felt like she was pushed, or pulled, forward; the earth seemed to give way to a deep abyss beneath. She cried out in surprise, but landed face first into solid ground instead.

The hunger started to set in as Altina dragged herself to her feet to continue after Master Eridan. And she felt miserable. A part of her wished she was at home, on Naboo, living in relative comfort. Not out in the forest on a planet in the middle of nowhere. She panted as she wiped the dirt from her face and trudged on.

"Come, Padawan. We have much to do, and we have little time, we must get you ready lest the Force call us to action before you are prepared," she heard Master Eridan say in the distance.

Altina was too tired to complain, merely grumbling as she tried to catch up while fending off the constant whispers. And watching for other tricks that the Force may play on her. When she finally managed to catch up to Master Eridan, Altina breathed a sigh of relief right before he gestured for her to sit. He asked her about the Force. Fine, it at least afforded her time to catch her breath.

"It's a power only certain people can use," Altina huffed as she wiped the sweat from her brow.

She felt like she heard explanations of the Force before, especially at the temple. Altina did not pay too much attention to them, but it seemed that her recollections might prove useful for the quiz ahead.

Kyp smiled inwardly, but kept his face neutral. It would not do to let her think he was amused by her ignorance, but he was. It was a common misconception many had. Rey Skywalker herself had dispelled the Jedi of that misconception. Despite this, many first time students offered similar answers, and there was nothing to be ashamed in that. To truly begin as a Jedi, one must unlearn what they have learned, after all.

"No. It is not a power only certain people can use. It is the energy that flows through all things. It exists in all life, from the smallest of insects to the largest of Purrgil. It flows through us, it surrounds us. It connects us. We do not use the Force, I do not use the Force. We seek the aid of the Force, we do not use it. For it does not belong to us to use." Kyp closed his eyes, and cleared his mind, slowly he allowed his senses, his feelings, to reach out, to extend around him, to let the Force speak to him, to let it guide him. Slowly, three small stones rose in front of him, arranging themselves into a small tower before coming to rest on the ground before him. His eyes opened, and she would be able to see in them a serenity, a clarity of purpose, as if he almost saw through her. The sight would last for but a moment as he closed his mind.

"As we clear our minds, we increase our connection with this Force, and in doing so, the Force will aid us. Though it is not so precise as simply asking." He extended a leg and knocked over the stones. "Reach out. Clear your mind, focus your attention on my voice so that it may cut all distractions away, focus on it, until at last even my voice is no longer a distraction, and you will understand."

Kyp rose to his feet and began to walk slowly in a circle about her. "All that we train in will allow you to hone this concentration, to allow you to focus not on your surroundings, not on the future, not on the past, but the here and now, just you and your connection to the Force. Breathe slowly, feel your breath as it enters your lungs, feel the slow compression as you exhale. Feel the air flow from your body and provide energy to the plants around you." Kyp continued his slow, steady, pacing, looking about, trying to remember all the basics of his first sessions. They felt like they were so far in the past that they were but a blur. Now, it all came so naturally, as if an extension of himself, as if an ally who was never far from his side.

"Focus on my voice. Carefully, close out all other distractions, the sounds of the animals and the insects, let them all fade away. Tell me, as my voice fades into the background, what do you feel?"

'If the Force is within all things, then can't everyone become Jedi?' Altina wanted to ask. But she didn't have the courage to speak out.

She watched as the three stones stacked on top of each other like magic. This is the Force in action, she knew. It seemed surreal to see but, in theory, Altina knew she was expected to eventually know how to do that herself. Then, Master Eridan toppled the stone tower.

Altina blinked. What? What was the purpose? She stared at the stones as Master Eridan stood up and walked behind her, continuing his lecture.

"Equality is a myth to protect the weak. Some of us are strong in the Force, others are not. Only a fool believes otherwise," a sinister voice whispered in her ear.

She looked over her shoulder, but it is only Master Eridan. Focus, he was saying. Perhaps the most terrorizing thing he could try to have her do. Every time she had tried, Altina was met with a surge of emotions, voices, and visions. Every instinct she had was begging her to not do it, but she remembered the little green alien, aged beyond comprehension, looking at her with a soft smile from the lake shore.

Trust Master Eridan, she remembered.

Altina tried what Master Eridan had instructed her to do. She tried focusing on his voice, over the continued whispers that tugged the corners of her mind. Master Eridan's voice had always cut through the noises and so she focused on each word in turn. As he had suggested, the sounds of the forest faded from her memory. But the voices did not. In fact, they seemed to get louder and more real as she separated sounds from Master Eridan.

Not only did the sounds fade in her mind, it seemed to fade for everyone around her. Kyp would certainly have noticed but, in that moment, Altina has no way of realizing that.

"People keep telling me they know me. I'm afraid no one does."

The voice echoed in her mind. The sorrow sliced through her like a spear, embedding itself in her chest. Focus, Altina reminded herself. More sweat laced her brow as she shivered. Focus.

Khooohhh... puhhhhhh... a heavy, mechanical breath took over.

Altina felt more afraid than she had ever been. For some reason, it felt like each breath was the sound of Death incarnate. Focus, she wanted to remind herself. But it was crushed by fear.

Khooohhh... puhhhhhh... It felt as though something was pulling her towards the source of the breath.

No, she has to crawl away from it. But her body wouldn't respond to her command. No, this cannot be happening. This is too much. "No!"

The sounds of the forest returned as Altina toppled to one side. She gasped for air, realizing that her whole body was covered in sweat. Her eyes darted about, trying to find Master Eridan. Everything looked too dark, as though she was blanketed in a veil.

"Master..." she croaked meekly as she felt around with a hand.

It was working, he could feel it, he could see the calm for but a moment as she focused. He could feel her, he could even hear the sounds of the forest begin to silence. Such a strong connection with the Force. She likely had an even stronger natural connection to the Force than he. It was a shame to see such raw talent go untrained. Even more than ever, he knew that he had a duty to train this Padawan to the best of his abilities, meager though they were.

And then it all fell apart. Fear. The cold tendrils of the emotion seemed to flow from her, growing, colder, colder, until there was almost a sense of hoarfrost on his skin. He could hear the animals crying out in their own fear, he could see the brush swaying where the ran. He could hear the flying of birds in the air. Then the cry, the collapse, his padawan slumping to the ground, meekly asking for him. He wanted to lunge forward, to aid her, but he did not. No, he held himself back. She needed to understand. She needed to see. Instead, he sat down, perching himself on the trunk he had first claimed. His eyes closed, he said nothing. Instead, he reached out, let his mind clear, opened himself, let his feelings extend.

It was a sense of serenity that befell the Forest, and where there had been moments before the sudden rush of activity, it fell away, not silence, not drowned out, but peaceful. Calm. A gentle, cooling breeze seemed to flow past him. Altina could see those three stones, and others around them beginning to rise as he communed with the Force.

"Peace, padawan, peace. The absence of fear. Open your mind, just a little bit, feel the world around you, feel my calm. Feel the soft breeze, feel the energy that surrounds this place. Do not be afraid. Fear leads to anger. Anger lads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. When you feel overwhelmed, as before, do not be afraid, be calm, know you are a Jedi. Your stand against fear. Take that fear within you and turn it to peace."

He continued to sit, leaving himself open to the Force, open for her to sense the calm within him, the understanding, the compassion. He knew she would not understand, not yet. To master fear took years. But perhaps through example she might be able to last a little longer.

"When you feel my calm, my peace, slowly open your mind once more. Focus on that feeling, hold it tight, let it be the light in the darkness of your mind. Try and remain focused on it as long as you are able. Extend that focus as long as you can."

He fell silent then, and his mind cleared of thoughts, letting the Force speak to him, guide him as to how to proceed. His breathing slowed once more, gentle, steady, almost as if it matched the gentle breeze that passed by them. He would be the light in the darkness of her mind, or he would not, and they would begin again.

The fear continued to grip Altina, fading only once her sight returned and she was able to drag herself back into a sitting position. She felt a little betrayed that Master Eridan did not even present a comforting hand to her. Not noticing the feeling of calm that her master was ushering into herself, Altina turned to face Master Eridan with a sour look. The student shivered as her warmth was ripped from her body by the layer of sweat.

"Easy for you to say," she grumbled with the same sour gaze.

How is she supposed to stand against fear? It is not like she could just stare it down on a whim.

"And how am I supposed to turn fear into peace? What does that even mean?" Altina demanded.

The whispers of the Force started to creep upon her again. She took a deep breath as her frustrations boiled underneath, kept in check by Kyp's actions. Altina didn't quite understand what her master meant by 'his calm' and 'his peace,' but she did quietly admit that she has calmed down quickly compared to a minute ago. Despite her frustrations, Altina did as Master Eridan instructed.

She focused. Shakily, as Altina wasn't entirely sure of how to focus on the serenity that Master Eridan was telling her to center herself on. As she delved deeper into the tranquility that Master Eridan sought her to find, the same feelings started to return. It felt as though the Force was being drawn out of everything around the master and apprentice, revealing their true colors.

The same mechanical breath returned as well. Khooohhh... puhhhhhh...

Her fears also returned. As much as Altina tried to steel herself, there was just something about it that she could not shake away. Then the mechanical voice actually spoke.

"Release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me," it taunted her.

As sinister as it sounded, tapping into her life frustrations felt easy; a shortcut to the strength needed to achieve what Master Eridan is asking for. There is no shortage of experiences she could draw on for such power.

Altina gritted her teeth as she drew on the power to confront her fears. The dark energy began to permeate as she dueled her fear. But it seemed as though another power held her back.

"No, Anakin! No!"

Her eyes shot open again as Altina gasped for air yet again. It was rare for her to be able to pick out names from the voices. Who was that? Why did the voices say that name?

"Anakin?" she echoed. Altina looked at Master Eridan expectantly, but remembered it was not Master Eridan who said that.

"Sorry. It's the voices again," she mumbled, looking down at her feet as her cheeks reddened in embarrassment.

Mixing up her reality with her supernatural experiences happens on occasion. And it was always embarrassing to be caught talking to nonexistent people.

He did not respond to her questions about how. She would need to discover that on her own. How one addressed fear was an incredibly individual thing, and he would not impose his own will on her. He would, however, be that gentle, warm, light that showed her the way. so he continued, even as he felt the fear within her grow and grow, turning into frustration. No that was not right, she needed to see his example, she needed to understand, she needed to internalize, to confront her demons and understand that when you accept that fear, you confront it, you find the peace that comes with the familiar, the known, and there is nothing to fear with that.

He was up in a moment, his hand reaching out, about to yell for her to stop what she was doing before she went too far. And then her eyes opened, and he could see the look of expectant rebuke, and his heart sank, as did his body, he fell back onto the tree, there was true power there, and it had been suffused in the dark side. She needed to understand, you did not confront fear with hate, with frustration. But things were becoming more and more clear. Voices, pulling her to the dark, scaring her to no end. He was sure of it. He would have to work with her on confronting fear, both from what was on the physical plane and the metaphysical.

"A good start, but you must do... better." He said to her, not answering her statement. He needed to research this Anakin, understand why she might be hearing him in the Force. But first, he needed to continue her training. He rose to his feet and extended a hand to her. "We will work on taking fear within you and thus turning it into peace, but before we move on, you must understand this. A jedi does not face fear with anger, it faces fear with knowledge and compassion. Take your fears, understand them, make them your own, and they will no longer be fear, but peace instead."

Once she was standing he turned, looking out into the forest, he said nothing, instead letting a soft sigh escape his lips. He was running out of ideas, for he did not wish to push her further on this regard, but perhaps if they tried a different approach to meditation for now. He would leave it to her to decide, he supposed. But how to broach the topic? Having an apprentice was hard work, and it seemed to leave him doubting himself at every turn, unsure how to proceed with his training.

"We can keep going if you think you are able, I leave the decision to you. If you cannot, I can train you on other areas, though I suspect they will be more difficult for you without the aid of the Force."

Initially, Altina felt better than she made progress on her training, but that relief evaporated quickly. She was approaching everything wrong; she should not have attempted to utilize that reservoir of power. That feeling made her heart sink again.

'Do I have no talent?' she wondered.

Altina accepted Master Eridan's hand and stood beside him. She sensed her master's internal debate before he began speaking. But rather than noticing it, the thoughts troubled her further. Were other padawans easier to train than her? Is this the end of her training? Her longing to return home glimmered, but a sensation urged her against it.

"Let me try again," Altina said. "But at least answer my questions first."

She stepped in front of her master, looking up into his eyes. Initially, Altina wanted to just ask the same question again, but figured that she would receive the same empty response. Instead, she rephrased it.

"Can you tell me how you found peace from one of your fears?" she asked. It was only after she posed it did Altina realize how personal it would be to answer.

"If you don't mind sharing, of course," she quickly added.

Rather than an answer, she figured an example would suffice to understand what her master is trying to tell her.

Good, she wanted to improve, to try again. She wanted to succeed. That was a good step. Trying again would serve her well. Working hard was the way to succeed as a Jedi, after all. He needed to impress on her the idea that giving in to her fears would be to give in to the dark side. So he looked down at her, offered her a soft smile, and said "Good. Very good." He continued to stare out into the forest as he thought back, tried to remember a fitting example. This was not something he did consciously, after all, well not anymore. As he struck upon the memory, his expression fell, becoming more serious, the hint of cheerful kindness gone from just moments before.

"Well, I suppose, I should begin with a story. I was born on Chandrilla, a peaceful world. So you must understand that making my way to the Outer Rim was not easy. As I had left my family behind to follow the will of the Force, I did not have much in the way of credits, and I was forced to use some very... disreputable... transportation services. I do not know if you have ever had someone wave a blaster in your face and demand all your credits, but I can attest that it is not a very peaceful situation to be in. I suppose it was in that moment that I learned to accept those things that caused me fear. For you see, I was scared, not just for my life, but that I would never achieve my goal of coming here, to Ajan Kloss, and becoming a Jedi. After all, I have no real skill as a pilot, and without credits to hire my own, I would be stranded. But even so, I reminded myself, that the Force has plans for us all, you see, that the Force wanted us to be here, and that it would give us a way. And so I turned over my credits and took comfort in the fact that with the Force as my ally, I would make it to this place. And, well, here I am, Padawan, here I am."

Kyp looked down at Altina once more as the memory faded from his mind. He offered her another cheerful smile. "You see, Padawan, once I accepted the fear, made it a part of me, and understood it, I was no longer afraid. I was at peace. That is how you defeat fear, understanding. Trust in the Force, Padawan, trust in yourself, and trust in me. Now, return to your seat, and let us begin again." He moved and retook his seat, gesturing for Altina to take her own.

It had never left him, the vivid recollection of the blaster up against his head, the heat of the muzzle from where the old lady who had refused to give up what little credits she had left lay on the deck of the tramp freighter, the blaster wound that had killed her still reeking of ozone. That had all been long ago, and he had moved beyond such fears, after all, the thieves were surely just acting out due to their own desperation. It was such a vicious cycle, after all. Perhaps that had been part of why the Force had put such a trial in his path, or perhaps it had just been a quirk of the galaxy. But that was another time and another place. He was in a much better situation now. He was where he belonged.

She truly tried to listen as best she could, given the mutterings of the Force. In fact, it seemed as though the Force wanted her to hear his story: the imagery that Master Eridan weaved seemed to resonate around her. The desperation, anxiety, and fear. More than ever, Altina felt that she understood her master. No power can overcome the Force itself, not even fear. Is this why he chastised her for tapping into a seemingly obvious innate power?

"I think I understand," she said as she looked into Master Eridan's renewed cheery face. At least, she hoped she found the answer.

Altina returned to her seat on the stone floor. She thought about her past attempt as she closed her eyes, how there always seemed to be a lure held out to the easy path to power. If that was not the path that the Jedi should take, where is the other?

"Always remember: your focus determines your reality," a voice whispered.

She usually tried to ignore the voices, but something struck her about its wisdom. Master Eridan kept telling her to focus on him and she simply did that without thinking about why. Pieces started coming together as she contemplated the why.

"Your focus... determines your reality..." she muttered as she slid into meditation.

Altina had been hiding from them, screaming at them, and shunning them. The voices are part of the Force. Concentrate. Rather than a mixture of noise growing louder as she delved deeper, she could hear the voices in even greater clarity; the calmer, more reserved voices and darker, more sinister ones echoing in tandem. She could feel the sweat begin to drip in anticipation of the return of that mechanical breath.

"Concentrate on here and now, where it belongs."

"Take what makes you weak and turn it into something that makes you strong."

Altina shuddered. She felt like the rope of a tug-of-war, pulled apart by the opposing forces of her mind. Neither side willing to budge. The air around her shuddered in the battle between light and dark. Even the gravel trembled from the display of power.

"Trust in the Force."

"Focus."

Her master's instruction within her mind renewed her mental energy. The words of darkness grew mute in contrast to the words of light. It seemed as though she was starting to gain some semblance of control when she finally heard it again.

Khooohhh... puhhhhhh...

Fear crept into her mind once more. She fought back, more vigorously than ever. Concentrate. Trust. Focus.

Khooohhh... puhhhhhh...

Concentrate. Trust. Focus.

"When you feel overwhelmed, as before, do not be afraid. Be calm."

Concentrate. Trust. Focus.

"Know you are..."

"... a Jedi," she murmured.

Silence reigned not only in her mind but in the environs around her: perhaps the first time she could ever recall such a moment in her life. Is this what peace feels like? It filled her with relief as she wished the moment would never fade. But like all things, it eventually did.

Her eyes opened as sound returned to the forest. Instantly, Altina looked at Master Eridan for his approval. She felt more relaxed than ever before, even as the whispers returned in her mind.

"How was it?" she asked.

Kyp hoped she understood, for her sake. She needed to understand that fear is best confronted by understanding, not anger. And so he watched as she took her seat, settled into position and began to focus. And so he too closed his eyes, focused on the Force on understanding the feelings that surrounded her, and though he still felt the moments of anger, the spikes of fear emanating from her, there was a brief moment, peace, calm, serenity, and absence of fear and a sense of stillness that pervaded everything. Perhaps she did understand, at least on a conscious level. And that... that was the starting point for all things with the Force.

He opened his eyes as she spoke, asking him, seeking his approval. He smiled, truly pleased to see the sense of peace and relaxation on her face. He looked her in the eyes then, a warm, gentle expression. One of simple approval. "You did well, my young padawan. You did very well indeed. I want you to remember this experience, I want you to focus on those feelings. I want you to go to this place, this moment, whenever you feel overwhelmed. Remember how it felt to understand your fear, to see hatred and fear subside and leave only peace, to leave only the Force. You will need it in the studies to come. These are your first steps. There will be many more to come. Physical training, studying, history, science, mathematics, all of it. You will learn to wield a lightsaber, you will learn much. You will be afraid, you will fear failure, you will be tired, sore, and angry. When those times come, just remember the feeling today. I know I will."

Truly, he could not help but feel proud of her, it was something special, to help guide a padawan down their first steps towards understanding of the Force. Had this been how his own master had felt? He doubted it, the man had been a rock, unemotional, distant, but still, how could even he not have felt something special in moments such as this? Kyp was not going to let himself be like his master had been. He would not coddle his apprentice, no, but he would provide her with a sense of understanding, and he would do better than his master had done for him.

"Now, padawan, I have here a list of books I would like you to begin to read. I want you to run back to the temple, and I mean run. You will study the first of these books, I want a report on the life of Luke Skywalker by next week. In addition, you will run every morning for 1 hour before making your way to this spot by sunrise where we will discuss your studies, work on your meditation, and, when I deem you ready, we will begin lightsaber training."

He rose to his feet and stepped forward to her, removing a disc from his sleeve and offering it to her. "Do you have any questions?"

He was pleased and so she was pleased as well. It definitely felt like a huge achievement to her, so Altina was glad that her master was proud of her progress. It has been ages since Altina last remembered smiling, and so much that it felt like the grin was etched into her face.

Even as the voices vied for her attention, she listened as best she could to Master Eridan's instructions. It felt less like a reward and more like the beginning of a long list of chores she had to do. That smile slowly dissolved as Master Eridan listed off each piece of her training. Running? For an hour? Altina felt like she could barely crawl to this spot as it is, let alone walk or run. Practicing a lightsaber seemed mildly interesting, but Altina was totally clueless what such training would entail. And then studying history? Science? Math? Isn't that stuff that normal people learned? What relevance do they have for Jedi?

"I'm already overwhelmed," Altina said. "How am I supposed to do everything you are asking?"

Besides, have some faith in yourself, young one, I would not give you these tasks if I did not think you could handle them."

Kyp held out his hand a bit more urging her to take the disc. He offered her a bit of an impish smile. "I'm pretty sure I still know where the chef keeps their personal stash of desserts."
