The Will of the Force

Reading was one of Casper’s favourite past-times. When he read, he could forget about everything troubling him. His anxieties, his worries – all of it was gone. Instead, he could focus entirely on the subject of his book. Whether it was the local fauna for the subregion of a distant planet, or the courageous adventures of a fictitious sector ranger. For Casper, reading was his meditation. He’d struggled with actual meditation for a while, but everything was amplified after Ajan Kloss. All of the problems he had before now felt insurmountable, and new feelings of guilt only compounded the issues that the young padawan grappled with.

For now, though, Casper was enjoying one of these moments of solitude. He’d found a small rock pool not far from the temple on Yavin, but still hidden well enough that nobody had ever stumbled across him and interrupted his solitude, yet. He liked it here. It felt like something that was his own. His own little corner of Yavin, and a space where he could free. The gentle rush of the water as it flowed downwards, the chirping of alien birds and the vibrant colour of plants Casper had never before come across. Sometimes, he even liked to swim in the water. Curiously enough, it was always perfectly lukewarm. Never too hot, and never too cold. He theorised that there was some sort of natural heating under the rockbed, but uncharacteristically for him, he’d never bothered to find out. This was, after all, the place where he relaxed.

Today’s subject of choice was a book concerning force-wielding animals written by an old beastmaster of the Jedi Order that Casper had been lucky enough to source from the archives. It was fascinating. The Vornskr of Myrkr, for example, were quadrupedal predators that were able to use the force in order to sense, and hunt their prey. Casper wondered how that had ever been discovered, but he certainly didn’t fancy confirming the theory himself. The Vornskr were some of the most ferocious beasts he’d seen depicted. Nevertheless, their ability to understand in the force was profoundly interesting to Casper. After all, why should it be only the Jedi or Sith that use the force?

“..Vornskar..Vornskeer..” Casper whispered to himself, testing his pronunciation of the species. He had no idea if it was correct, but it sounded good enough. He was sat comfortably with his back against the thick trunk of a tree behind him, looking out towards the rock pool

Bringing up a hand to tuck a rogue strand of golden hair behind his ear, he then turned the page. There were plenty more beasts to learn of.

Fiach was, as ever, struck again by Yavin’s oppressive perfume of mildew and rotting vegetation. It was something you became accustomed to, without ever really getting comfortable with it.

As she walked, she recalled the list of terrifying beasts she’d read about in a translation of a work by the Sith, Darth Caldoth. It was a bestiary of the sort of creatures you never wanted to encounter. “Silooth…tuk'ata…veergundark…krastenane…” she recounted, suppressing a shiver at the thought of meeting any one of them unprepared, let alone a number of them.

They were all terrifying in their own way, and one stood out as she reflected on them. Not necessarily because of its ferocity, but because it was the reason she was here. The Tuk’ata were a species of creatures classified as a Sith warbeast or Sith hounds. Commonly found on Moraband, the archives suggested they may have originated on this very planet, but she doubted it, given the lack of corroborating evidence.

Tuk’ata were large quadrupedal creatures whose limbs ended in clawed paws. They boasted a long whip-like tail, a mouth full of sharp fangs, and a row of spines along their back and tail. They were used by the Sith as guardians of their tombs. Throw into the mix that they were semi-sentient, and you had a formidable foe.

And, if the stories were true, one had been spotted nearby and Fiach had been sent to investigate. As she walked carefully and as silently as she could, she happened upon a rockpool and almost stepped onto a Padawan, who was reading.

“Sorry,” she said, “I was too focused on something else. A bad trait for anyone, let alone a Jedi.”

Casper was visibly startled by the sudden approach of Fiach, betraying the fact that he too had not been especially mindful of his surroundings. His head whipped to face the stranger, which he soon noticed to be a Jedi before she had even spoken. Worries raced through his mind. What’s she doing out here? Nobody ever comes up this way. Am I going to have to find a new spot? The Jedi Order had earlier warned padawans from straying too far into the dense wilderness beyond the temple, and one of his first thoughts was that she had been sent to find him. He was probably going to get an earful.

Yet the words that soon followed her sudden arrival were not scolding, nor was her tone harsh. No, this Jedi had a much gentler demeanour following her and seemed apologetic, more than anything else. His gaze drifted up to meet her own, and the fright he felt subsided into a mild curiosity. She seemed just as surprised to run into Casper as he did her, which meant she was up to something else in the wilds of Yavin.

“Oh. It’s alright.” He tilted the book in his hands upwards. “I was distracted, too. I was reading about Vornskr, and--”

He cut himself off, before continuing with a slight admission, “I know that we’re not supposed to go too far from the temple, but…” He looked around the rockpool before him, gesturing to the pleasant little spot in the wilds he had found for himself. “…I like it here. It’s peaceful.”

Closing the book in his hands, Casper straightened his posture against the tree he was resting against and brought up a hand to tuck behind his ear a few strands of hair that had come loose. “Nobody usually comes out this way.” He didn’t explicitly ask, after all, the business of a Jedi was none of his, and they were free to do as they pleased – but he couldn’t hide the fact that he was curious.

Why’s she out here?

Aware she had startled him, Fiach remained still and her usual calm self – her ubiquitous smile on her lips. She nodded at being distracted by reading. “I know the feeling when you become engrossed in something – it can really focus the mind in a way that makes the outside world fade. Which, is not an ideal situation to be in out here.” Her tone was soft and reassuring, with no hint of reproach in her voice. “The Force has a habit of letting us know when danger is near – and I trust the Force implicitly. But it never hurts to give it a helping hand by keeping our wits about us.”

It was clear from her words that she included herself in that comment. But before he could respond, she continued.

“And a quiet place to read is never a bad thing – and I would never admonish someone from studying – although your choice of location is a little to be desired. Unlike Ajan Kloss, this is a place where many predators live – and some may be partial to Padawans.” This time her smile widened to share the fact she was teasing him, albeit in a truthful way.

“And Vornskr eh? I guess you’re interested in fauna of the galaxy? Which is a coincidence – assuming the Force allows for those. Perhaps our meeting was more than just chance. Tell me, what do you know of the Tuk’ata?”

There was something different about this Jedi, and Casper found his attention caught by her. He had never been especially social, but she seemed to understand exactly what it was that he found in his escapes, such as reading.

She was right, too, the jungle was dangerous. He’d read of Howlers with their distinctive cries that were said to be heard at the dead of night as they hunted their prey, and of giant ant-like creatures called Kliknik’s that had formed massive hives deep within the wilds. He hadn’t seen any of these, of course, but knew they were out there, somewhere.

Tuk’ata? Here? …but those are Sith beasts. Casper had come across references to Tuk’ata in his readings, but couldn’t say he was much of an expert. They were often described as beasts of the Sith, which painted them in a particularly evil light – but did that mean they were all so? He wasn’t sure.

Setting his book down beside him, Casper rose to his feet and found himself to be a little taller than his new acquaintance. “Tuk’ata.. I suppose they’re not too different to Vornskr? I know that they’re giant, hound-like beasts… I think I read about them in an old text by a Jedi Beastmaster, Master Zyphen. Aren’t they beasts of the Sith?”

His knowledge of how ferocious the Tuk’ata actually were was limited, but they were said to be even stronger than the Vornskr, and that was more than enough to illustrate their might.

Fiach nodded as she listened. Some saw books as props – to be held to avoid social contact, or to fake learning. Clearly this young Jedi had taken notice during lessons and had read up on the subject.

Her only reservation on that score was the fact that he was out here, alone. If he’d believed what he’d read he wouldn’t be risking his life. Or maybe he overestimated his abilities against these sort of foes? Fiach carried enough scars beneath her robes to be able to show just how dangerous creatures could be.

But he was correct – at least in his understanding of the theory of the subject. “That’s a precise and accurate summary. And given their background, it is unlikely any would be found here. But…” She paused as she searched for the right words.

“But there have been sightings. Nothing definite – but worthy of investigation. And if there were Tuk’ata out here, what better way to draw them out than for a Jedi to wander around – inciting them to attack. So, inadvertently, you made yourself bait. And thankfully you remain whole.”

“So, given I’m on a hunt, of sorts, and you’re here – two Jedi are better than one. So, are you OK to accompany me?”

His eyes widened a little in realisation as Fiach addressed him. If there were Tuk’ata here… how could I be so silly?. He didn’t know much about them, but he knew they were ferocious, and Casper certainly didn’t fancy his chances against one alone. Still, this Jedi had been investigating on her own until she came across him – which meant she was, at least, confident in her own abilities to handle it. That meant he’d be safe around her in the event they did come across such a beast, and such an opportunity was too great to pass up.

The day had gotten more exciting than he could have imagined, and he found himself even more intrigued by the Jedi he had just met. Was she an expert on such beasts? Had she encountered them before? She probably had a whole host of stories that he could barely imagine. Casper was always a little awkward around his fellow Padawans – he never quite knew what to say. Around Knights and Masters, though, he had always felt at ease.

“Of course, I’ll follow your lead-“, he cut himself off promptly as he suddenly realised the two had not yet properly introduced themselves.

“Oh, and I’m Casper.”

Fiach smiled. “Well met, Casper,” she replied. “And I am Fiach. Fiach Dubh. Now, before we move on, it is worth establishing a few things – to better understand our strengths and weaknesses.”

“Tell me, what do your teachers say are your strengths, and where do they say you need to focus more attention? I ask, as we should identify how best to work together. I have good range in Force Sense, for example, so we are unlikely to be caught by surprise. A weakness is my unwillingness to take the initiative in combat.”

Why was she sharing this? In part to perform the task she outlined. But, also to build trust. In her experience, to share a vulnerability built openness and therefore confidence with a fellow Jedi. “Oh, and I’m good at meditation, but that probably won’t help us much now.”
