The Machine in the Ghost (prequel short)

The first of four prequel shorts for Star Wars Rebels has been released. It's called "The Machine in the Ghost" and features an OT-style dogfight between the Ghost and a group of TIE fighters. Check it out:

Looks pretty cool. For some reason the name "Chopper" bugs me. I don't know, it just doesn't seem that creative to be honest.

Hera and Kaden have a fun chemistry- they've got the kind of petty sexual tension a Man can get behind.

Feel bad for that TIE pilot who got downed by the astromech droid. Feel bad for all Imperial soldiers really. How must it feel to know that every single living or semi-living thing in the Galaxy is a better fighter than you.

Curses, I need to find alternatives then.

Edit: Alternative found. I gotta say it... feels a bit rushed, but then it is a short and you could handwave things on the miscommunication - and Chopper's frustrations - meaning no plan was stuck to for more than ten seconds. The sound design seems... better handled, than it was in the seven minute clip we'd seen, both for the music itself and stuff like Kanan echoing from the gunpod.

I also get its meant to be deliberately evoking the Tie Fighter attack from A New Hope, but I do wish that this kind of action isn't the only thing we get whenever the Ghost and its crew meet a patrol.

I actually loved everything about the short until the very end, when the Chopper moment took it a little too far into "silly" territory for me.

It mostly felt like a more fast spaced OT sequence, which I appreciated as an evolution of that type of narrative methodology. The interplay between characters here mostly felt natural, instead of stilted and awkward like previous sequences that we've seen, it didn't feel like the writer was literally trying to bury one liners into my skull, it felt like a family quarrelling with one another in a time of stress. Which is very Star Wars.

While most videos have caused me to react negatively recently, this one has actually brought me back towards the stable middle region of expectation.

I really liked it. I loved the dynamics between Chopper, Hera, and Kanan.
