Hello, Star Wars RP!

Yesterday, I mentioned I was working on something fun and exciting. I spent some time cooking and talking with @Sreeya, and I'm here to present the ideas I came up with and share them with you for feedback and opinions.

I present to you,

The Jedi Ascension Trials

"Once, in the Jedi Order, we held the Initiate Trials. The trials were intended to allow our young aspirants to show their progress within the order and given as a prerequisite for progressing to the level of Padawan. In time, this practice fell out of favour.

We would like to bring back the Initiate Trials. However, we do not desire to revive them only for the Initiates. Indeed, we would like to extend these trials to Jedi of all levels. We seek to encourage camaraderie and healthy competition and provide individuals with the means to find inspiration and role models."

What are the Jedi Ascension Trials?
The Jedi Ascension Trials are a set of tests by which Jedi of all levels—Initiates, Padawans, and Knights alike—showcase how their skills have developed throughout their ranks. The ideas behind the original Initiate Trials have been preserved and will apply to all positions. It will enable people to showcase how their characters have developed and will ideally simultaneously serve to encourage starting at lower ranks to progress upwards.

The Jedi Ascension Trials are optional for characters to participate in, but are highly encouraged!

What are the tests?

The tests have been divided into four categories. If a Jedi seeking a higher rank chooses to participate in them, there are three required tests and one optional one.

Trial of the Mind
Trial of the Body
Trial of the Spirit
The Trial of the Mind is a mental cognition test. Jedi aspiring to participate in and succeed at the trial must complete a challenge that tests the capabilities of their mind, such as senses, reflexes, and observational abilities. These challenges include deflecting blaster bolts, catching objects in the air, or spotting subtle nuances in seemingly identical images.
The Trial of the Body is a physical aptitude test. Jedi aspiring to participate in and succeed at the trial must complete a challenge that tests the capabilities of their body, such as strength, speed, and stamina. These challenges include obstacle courses, wall running, and other endurance and physical exertion feats.
The Trial of the Spirit tests the participant's capability of using the Force in varying intensity. Aspirants must complete various tasks utilising the Force, such as pushing and pulling large and small objects, stopping objects mid-air, carefully removing precariously stacked items or reassembling something without using their hands or other tools.

Trial of Arms
The optional of the four trials is the Trial of Arms. If aspirants choose to do so, they may participate in mock combat against one another to prove themselves to Masters or Knights seeking a Padawan, provide Initiates role models to seek out, or stoke friendly competition and inspiration to drive themselves further.

How does it work?

When there are enough people to participate in a set of Ascension Trials, a sign-up thread will be posted. If there are at least three to four applicants, a thread will then be created for those applicants. Participants will be sorted by their current rank, and tests will be adjusted accordingly. Initiates will go through the most basic tests to become a Padawan, and Padawans will go through more advanced tests to become Knights. Knights seeking to become Masters will undergo the most complicated and challenging trials.

As such, ranks will not be mixed together. Initiates will only be paired with other Initiates, Padawans with other Padawans, and Knights with other Knights. This is to keep things as simple and streamlined as possible instead of attempting to track and adjust the requirements for multiple ranks.

The initial post created will contain the challenge outlines for participants to read. When ready, those undertaking their trials will roll for how well their character does at the specified test and make their post. After everyone has posted their response to the first trial, the second trial will begin, and the process will repeat until all tests are completed.

Trials may not be the same from one Ascension Trial to the next!

Furthermore, there is the possibility that other characters may be asked to function as judges.

Who may participate?
Anyone and everyone with a Jedi character may join a Jedi Ascension Trial when they believe their character is ready and up to the challenge!

Even if you are not actively participating in an Ascension Trial, others are welcome to post and participate as observers to cheer for those who are. I want this to be something all members of the Jedi Order may participate in and grow from, not just people seeking rank-ups for their characters!

What are the incentives?
More opportunities to thread with your fellow Jedi Order member, of course!

Aside from providing more avenues for members to participate in open threads, after having some discussions with @Sreeya, we worked out the possibility of incorporating badges similar to those given out for Huttball.

Since the Jedi Ascension Trials are primarily geared towards hopefully incentivising more people to create Initiates and start from the ground up, some badges may be exclusive only to Initiates. As of right now, the approximate setup of badges will look something like this:

Initiate Badges
Padawan Badges
Knight Badges
  • Padawan Ascension Badge
    • Participated in and completed the Ascension Trial to Padawan.

  • Trial of Arms Victory Badge
    • Emerged victorious during the Trial of Arms.

  • Knight Ascension Badge
    • Participated in and completed the Ascension Trial to Knight.
  • Master Ascension Badge
    • Participated in and complete the Ascension Trial to Master.

Badges are still being developed and are subject to change! There may be more or less in the future if the interest in this thread is sufficient enough to move forward with making it a legitimate thing. However, this should allow people to gain an idea of what kinds of awards they can possibly expect to see coming from the Jedi Ascension Trials.

Why make this?
When I made my character T'vani, I made her with a very specific goal in mind: start from the ground up and, though no small amount of time and effort, have her ascend the ranks and get to future ranks through hard work and determination. I wanted her to be a character that I and others could look back on and see how far she progressed.

I think it's a wonderful experience and leads to a lot of investment and commitment to a character, and I want others to consider trying this for themselves! While making a character that's further into the ranks is by no means a bad thing, I think there's a special gratification to be had from starting at the bottom and climbing up. You see plenty of Jedi Knights, but very few Padawans and even fewer Initiates. I want to promote more activity and diversity in the Jedi Order faction, and I think this is one step of many that can be taken to spur activity and attention from all members of The Star Wars RP!

I think there something fantastic to be made of this. I think there's a lot of room for growth, development, wonderful stories, and fantastic, organic connections that can be established from an activity like this.

That's it! That's everything I've thought of so far. I'm sorry if the presentation isn't as good as it could be. I'm on a laptop in a Waffle King right now, so I don't have the giant monitors of my desktop to really eyeball things and make them look pretty! Still, I think this gets the point across.

I hope everyone finds this in their interest. If anybody has any feedback, questions, or concerns, please feel welcomed and encouraged to reply to this thread or ping me in the Discord! I go by the same name there, and I would love to get a legitimate gauge in interest and the thoughts of others regarding this second passion project of mine!
