I'm probably the only person keeping track, but the long-awaited prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy that finished up eight years ago has finally entered production. Peter Jackson has posted a few sneak peeks - I, for one, am still nerdgasming.

Video here.

I thought this was going to be a current events thread were a midget had a mental breakdown in a mall and pulled a gun.

The amount of work that they've put into those sets is amazing. You can actually WALK around Bag Ends. Very few movies do that.

It's more commonly done on TV shows and usually just with one main set. Not only does it cost a lot of money to build them, it costs a tonne just to maintain them.

I've read the book a few times and I loved it, I've no idea why they've decided to split it up though, it wasn't that big. What I'm interested in the most is how they intend to characterize the different dwarves so they all come across as real characters as opposed to them all looking alike as they have in previous incarnations.

I heard they plan to tell The Hobbit in the first movie and then follow the White Council's conflict with the Necromancer in the second movie.

As flawed as the LOTR films were when compared to the books, I still love them, and I've been holding my breath for the Hobbit ever since, so I'm pretty damn excited about this.

I'm sure there will be disappointments when I see what they've taken out of the story and what they've altered or added, but I still know it's going to be two amazing movies. Dwarves are my favourite race from Tolkien's universe, and they feature much more strongly in The Hobbit then in the LOTR, so I can't wait... Especially for the Dwarf army at the Battle of Five Armies. Hopefully the Dwarves aren't all comic relief like they made Gimli, that was one of the biggest disappointments for me in LOTR.

Looking forward to this. Seeing Smaug and the Battle of Five Armies in 3D ought to be epic.
