Something chilled? Hm. Well, I do have a recipe for homemade ice-cream. You can either use an old-fashioned ice-cream crank (I made my own through the magic of power tools and welding) or one of those ice-cream makers.

There's also zabaglione or sabayon which is like this custardy thing which is quite nice.

What about a nice consommé?

zabaglione sounds good, and consommé would be something i'd like to consume :P

Prospero's Tropical Consommé

1.5 cups sugar
1 cup water
1 golden pineapple, peeled; one uncored, one cored
1 vanilla bean, split and scraped
3/4 teaspoons salt
2 mangoes, peeled and pits removed
1/2 papaya, peeled, seeded, etc.
Lemon juice
Brown sugar


1. Make a simple syrup with the sugar and water. Put sugar in saucepan, whisk to break up any lumps. Add water. Whisk to incorporate. Cook over high heat until boiling. Sugar should dissolve into water. Let boil at rolling boil for 1 minute. No more no less. Be careful since sugar is very temperamental if heated too long. Let cool. At this point (optional) add in some lemon or orange zest. Peppercorns or sweet smoked paprika also make for a nice spicy/smoky counterpoint to the fruit. Fruit can also be added if you would like some textural contrast of par-cooked fruit and fresh fruit.

2. Make the consommé by roughly chopping half uncored pineapple, half of the papaya, and one mango and blending it in a blender with the vanilla bean, 1/2 cup simple syrup (or more to taste) and 1/2 teaspoon salt until thoroughly liquefied. Strain and refrigerate.

3. Chop the rest of the fruit. Toss with lemon and a tablespoon of brown sugar. Serve cold with consomme.

Editor's note: Referent to the consomme, I should note that I usually make a point of serving them with some cookies. Tuilles or shortbread suffice. I would recommend the former, for which I have a great recipe. I also have one for shortbread, but my Francophile tendencies recommend the former.

I have to confess I don't particularly like papayas. My girl does though, so I added them for her. Really any particularly vibrant tasting fresh fruit does. Watermelon works well. So do berries. And don't mention it. Love helping people out.

I love blueberries! Will that be a good substitute?

Sure. I love blueberries too and they work quite well in a chilled application. I wouldn't recommend blackberries or raspberries. Not a flavor thing, but drupelets tend to have those seeds which just detract from the texture.

Well yea- I don't like the rocky texture of blackberries and raspberries. There is a blueberry farm not too too far away from us where we try to make trips, in the summer, to pick yummy blueberries and whatnot. But I digress.

I'll let ya know how the adjusted recipe fairs after my man makes it.

Poor man ramen recipe #1

You will need: Hamburger meat (or sausage), ramen(top ramen), campbells tomato soup, and cheese(Your preferred kind)

Firstly you cook up the hamburger meat and put in whichever seasonings you like. After it is done cooking drain out the grease and pour in the can of soup( a little milk can help too). Stir and let simmer until soup is warmed up.

In a bowl put the ramen in whole and take your meat and soup mix and pour some in the bowl over the ramen. Sprinkle your cheese in and let sit for a few minutes or until ramen is soggy.

I've actually been to a Ramen factory in Japan. They're basically sort of like buckwheat soba, but flash-fried. Very useful in certain recipes provided you throw out those dreadful flavor seasoning packs.

To channel Voltaire for a moment, they're neither flavorful, nor seasoning, nor do they come in much of a pack.

90% of my recipes include me throwing out those pesky packets.

I remember back in the day that some horribly misguided kids used to use them on raw ramen packs as a snack.

Proving once again that Americans will literally do anything to avoid eating a piece of fruit.
