This isn't a critique of you guys and I'm not accusing anyone of 'doing it wrong', so please don't take this thread that way, but I'm just not feeling this setting any more. It's working for you all and that's great. Due to my own personal preferences, however, I think it's time for me to bow out of the picture.

When I think of RP I think of a lot of people banding together to go on adventures and have fun with the setting. I like to be able to trust those that I RP with and cooperate with them to have fun with the adventure itself, not to build up a faction or wage a war with a group of other people.

When I get a constant stream of PMs like this:

Natale seems very much the spy type, which is going to come in extremely handy with the IK's new format. Something I'd like you to do ICly is keep tabs on every IK, including myself, Pros, Bad, everyone. We're going to need you to try and keep an eye out for spies in our midst, we're not going to let the Sith nearly wipe us out again so we need to be on our toes. If you can do this for us, you'll have earned our trust and then some.

And find myself in a position where I need to deceive other people on an OoC level to further one faction's goals, when I discover that I have more fun NPC-ing threads than playing my own characters, that tells me that this isn't the game for me. It's just not something that I enjoy.

Maybe I've just run into a string of odd occurrences that have colored my judgment wrong about SWRP. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding what RP is all about at its core. If that's the case, then I apologize for judging this place falsely. But as of now I can't really find anything interesting in my threads here. Rather than bog everyone down with procrastination based on my personal frustration, I think I'm just going to take my leave.

I wish you guys luck,
SoloWing

I understand where you are coming from and all I can offer is main factions just may not be for you. I wish you luck in all your endeavors.

That makes sense if you don't like doing all of that. Maybe if you wanted to stay just go with a bunch of Indies have just do your own thing? But personally I think that it's a competition, and as long as things don't get personal and super hostile between real people out of character, it's fun. People are trying to win, and as long as everybody's still having fun it could work.

But I agree that that doesn't always work. Have fun with whatever you do though.

Dammit... We've lost a good RPer today. It's sad, and we shouldn't have to see stuff like this happen.

Only it doesn't work, because playing to win only breeds animosity, secrets, deception, etc. We had an entire timeline where that was the mindset, and it was awful. We really need to move away from it this timeline.

I totally understand where you're coming from, SoloWing, and I hope you reconsider. At the very least, an independent character not involved in faction affairs might be a great avenue to pursue, as would a character involved in Legacies quests when they're up and running.

I agree with Brandon and while I'm not knocking anyone's play-style or argument, I do have to note that part of the ethos I'm going with for the faction is IC sneakiness and whatnot. OOC sneakiness and whatnot is not worth the trouble and ends up burning bridges and just making it harder to come together and RP. So if there's confusion there, let me make it clear that is not what we're going for.

Anyhow, I respect your decision, Solo. I sent you a PM, so let me know if you reconsider, but best of luck either way.

Sad to hear that, Solowing. It saddens me to hear that this sort of thing is happening. While this is a game, I agree with what Bac said. It should be about playing as a team, etc.

Sometimes, it helps to take a break….But do return.

EDIT: My apologies for the redundancy- I did not see Pros. repose before I made my post.

We should play for an epic outcome and the adventure, not for the win. The former requires working together with everyone, including people in "opposing" factions. The latter requires you try to beat the other players, which is not good.

Indeed. I've already spoken with some of the Sith guys about doing some quests and joint factional stuff. I do get that some people want a win and I don't want to marginalize that viewpoint, but as I've noted before, I'm a story kind of guy first. That's part of why I RP. I'm an okay writer, and I want to improve as well as have some fun with a story.

Anyhow, Solo, if you ever want to reconsider, lemme know. That is not what we're doing at the IK at all and I've already sent an executive memo out to that effect. IC spying and espionage and whatnot is fun to play and should be James Bondish whilst driving a story. OOC spying and whatnot is inimical to the cooperative and open dialog that is a necessary precondition to good storytelling.

Personally, I don't mind marginalizing that mindset at all. Not the RPer who believes it, mind you, but the opinion itself. If you have a group of 100 RPers and 99 of them all agree that the story comes first, the other 1 person who thinks winning is what matters can wreck it for everyone.

That's not to offend anyone here who does believe that, but I'm not of the opinion that "winning comes first" is a mindset that should be supported in any meaningful way.

I respect your decision, Solowing, and support you in it. If this isn't the place for you, I hope you find a place better, or maybe even come back once things are straightened up. It's embarassing to know that members are playing a game more seriously than it should be played, and are backstabbing members to get characters killed and what not just to come out saying "I'm the ****ing winner!" You will be missed here, I can promise you that much.

One final Ooh-rah and good luck to whatever you do. Hope you stop by for a visit at least, though. Just a small OOC thread letting us know how you're doing. Good luck, man.

I'll also selfishly add that another storyline you may be interested in, SoloWing, is the Ophuchi Diverse RP, which you can find in a sub-board of the Diverse RP board. That's a story that already has a set outcome and isn't about winning, so I'd love for you to participate in that if you're interested.

Yeah, it could go for some people who aren't civilians.

That's still fine, though. The Ophuchi lead the rebellion, but for the rebellion to work it has to be one where the Ophuchi inspire and lead the civilians to rebel. More civilians makes sense, though having a few other Ophuchi players would still be great.

Just as an aside, it's not competition that sucks, it's one sided competition that sucks. The Republic was a dead fish(although on its way back with the RMC about to launch a huge campaign) and the Hutts would've met it with vigor, which would've been most interesting. Anyway, though, the same is happening this timeline as the "good guys" are crippled by a string of indecisive or inactive leaders who were unable to keep up with the much more proactive "bad guys", who happened to have some better fighters at the moment, leading to one sided battles and a one sided timeline again.

Continue as you were :P

One-sided or two-sided doesn't make much of a difference. The winning mindset breeds the secretive and deceptive RPing, and that happens regardless of whether it's one-sided or not. It's that secretive and deceptive RPing that sucks the fun out of timelines more than anything else, and that's an unavoidable biproduct of the winning mindset.

^ This. It's also the reason I tend to stay out of big timeline threads and RP's because of how the deceptiveness is. I have both a Jedi and a Sith master, and if I were to go into the major threads, I know for a fact I'd get pulverized and attacked because I have both and either side will say "We win! Don't go to them!" And force me to choose a side. That would drive me away from the site just like it did Solowing.

Hell, back in the Hutt war timeline, I kept getting PM's about my Hutt noble saying "We want your character to perform espionage." I even got one so bold as to say "Can we kill your character?" It's those reasons I keep my characters and do my own small, personal stories, and I have more fun that way.

In your honor Solo-Wing, I will try my hardest to not breed anomosty and distrust. I am trying to be open with all my friends, people in every different faction. I know what you mean, each seems tinged with distrust and secrecy. While good IC, its not something needed OOC. I didn't know you well, but you will be missed.

I call out to all you people, stop treating this as a war to be won. I feel no matter who wins, I win. I have friends in every faction and if they Win, so do I! If I lose, it gives me more incentive to do better! Who cares which faction actually wins in the end?

Last timeline's being overtly inclined towards winning was hardly worse than this timeline's one-sided domination. You have an entire faction (or did, I don't really lurk much anymore) of people who like to fight (Sith: higher ups are people like Sreeya and CK) and an entire faction of people who are in it for the story.

Speaking as someone who had been on the Jedi Council for most of this timeline, that dichotomy really isn't true. The Jedi were disorganized and lacked proper, active leadership. The Sith did not have that problem. The domination wasn't because one side had a win, win, win mentality and the other side had a story first mentality, it was because one side sucked and the other side didn't.

It's not fair to fault the Sith for the problems of the Jedi.
