”It’s good to hear that!” Wilhelm said, showing the Ranger how he was relieved for the bombs being deactivated. The Acolyte couldn’t allow Bast to discover that he already knew about it. This could raise many questions that could end destroying his disguise as a member of the Republic.

The Acolyte watched Bast once again pick Jalt’s datapad. This time she was trying to insert the name Orin to unlock it. When he had hacked the device hours early, Wilhelm had also discovered that it was the password. However, once again he needed to fake not knowing it for the sake of his mission.

“There is anything useful on it?” he said, after the Ranger was able to unlock the datapad. After he had hacked it, the Acolyte had left among Jalt’s files about his jobs for the Syndicates, a message asking for the elimination of Chancellor Ro. The boy would wait patiently until she discovered it.

The screen on the datapad flickered and changed, finally yielding to reveal its contents. The whole system was a cluttered mess, and the woman had to dig through quite a few files and messages reading “Your Speeder’s Extended Warranty!” before coming across anything of significance. There was some strange comfort in knowing criminals also got scammed.

A few minutes wasted, Bast finally found a hologram recording from a known syndicate member asking that he would aid in the ‘resolution of political tensions through any means necessary’. His search history contained the very weapon the former Chancellor was assassinated with, and the floor plans for the apartments in the neighborhood near where around had lived were also downloaded. The Lieutenant chuckled in amazement. Never had she seen such a beautifully conclusive array of evidence. It was almost too good to be true. Almost. She would write up a neat report for the Senator and give a commendation for Wilhelm at the Academy. And then she would wash her hands of the whole affair. For once, there woul not be any need for late-night digging and stakeouts. It was a good day.
