Starting Over (The training of Jalaes'len)

Although he had only been part of the Jedi for a short period of time now, Jalaes'len felt like he had already accomplished more than he could have in a lifetime at his village. Sitting in the training chambers he had been requested to go to by his new master, he found himself drifting in and out of thought. The room was sparsely decorated save for a few sculptures of ancient Jedi masters, a wooden bench placed below an open window and a elegantly drawn ring in the center of the room, which was where he now sat.

It wasn't that he didn't like the room, it was just the fact that he would have preferred to be outdoors, a newfound passion for him since he left his old village. Facing the window he let the light fall upon his blue pigmented face. It felt refreshing and also helped calm his nerves about being trained.

Apparently it was by a Jedi councilmen, by the name of Dewbecca. He felt honored to have been trained by one of the leaders of the order, but that was also what led him to distress. What if he failed his new master, that was one of his greatest fears, failing. Quickly shoving the thought out of his head he began to think about what a wookiee was as he waited, because he had been told that was the species his master came from.

Dewbecca was looking forward to this new chapter he was about to undertake, he had only trained one person before hand but in doing so allowed him to become a master on the council but he felt he wanted to train more.

He was very proud of Cade, his first padawan and was confident in his abilities to do so again, he knew very little of his new padawan except his name, age and species.

He entered the training chambers and found his new padawan sitting alone in the centre of the area, right away Dewbecca could feel a great number off emotions building up in the young man....One thing was predominant though...He was very nervous.

''Jalaes'len I presume?''

Shooting up as soon as he heard a robotic voice emanate throughout the room, Jalaes'len's first thought was that wookiees were robots and that someone had misled him. But as he spun around he saw a tall, furry being, he had been told about, in front of him, gently brushing his lekku back behind his head, he bowed. When he reverted back to his tense posture, he realized he had to brush them back again.

Gathering what composure he had left, Jalaes'len responed "Yes, master Dewbeca?"

He knew it had came off as a question, but it was intended that way because he wanted to make sure it really was the Jedi master. Jalaes'len also made a mental note to himself to try to revert back to his normal self, it felt rather odd being nervous.

''I am indeed Dewbecca and I have chosen you as my padawan, You seem nervous young one''

Dewbecca smiled as he said that, he knew how nerve racking waiting for ones master could be, it seemed like only yesterday that Dewbecca sat shaking with nervous energy waiting for his master, strange how experience could teach one just as many things as actually learning in conventional ways.

Looking surprised at first Jalaes'len reminded himself to try and return to his normal personality. The reason he was startled was that it wasn't everyday that someone guessed your emotions, but then again he was at the Jedi temple, he still hadn't got used to that yet.

Seeing the wookiee smile, eased the padawan's nerves a little. Taking a deep breath Jalaes'len responded "I am, but I'll get over it eventually."

''I remember my first meeting with my master, I was so nervous that I broke a window trying to get her a seat, never ever use force powers during a first impression. So right away you have done better then me''

Dewbecca laughed in a deep wookiee bellow, he hoped this would help the padawan to calm himself. Even the very greatest jedi the galaxy had ever seen started at the very bottom. In the end he was confident in his padawan's ability or he would not off choosen him.

Joining in with the wookiee, Jalaes'len began to laugh. There was nothing like a good story to calm the nerves. Easing up on his posture, the padawan became more relaxed with each chuckle. The wookiee definitely knew how to handle situations, Jalaes'len would give him that. Becoming assured that he wasn't being overly judged, took a heavy burden off the padawan's shoulders.

His laughter stopping he recomposed himself and making sure his trust was known he said, "Thank you, master."

Dewbecca spoke with a softish tone, well as soft as a wookiee could do.

''Now, why don't you tell me a small bit about yourself.''

Dewbecca felt this was a massive part of training, it was completely stupid to Dewbecca to just spend the entire training episode simply telling him what to do was rather strange, building a relationship between them and having the padawan understand why he was learning these things would always help.

Having mellowed out, Jalaes'len took a deep breath and began to think. His life seemed like a broad topic, over a big period of time, maybe it wasn't as long as that of his master's but still having to only say a small bit about seemed like a hard topic. What to say, maybe just his life story, but from his point of view sometimes life story became monotonous and boring. Also it wouldn't say that much about him.

Closing his eyes, he racked his brain, maybe a bit about him and then a little of his life story. Yes that sounded good, that way his master would get a little insight into both. Deciding that would do, he quickly opened his eyes and started to speak.

His tone level and calm, the padawan said, "Well from birth, I've normally been a calm person. I've also been a very hard worker and my old friends used to call me a pushover. My teachers at my old village often told my that I was hesitant to learn new things. As for my old life, I was born to one of the leaders of the town and being a force sensitive I caused a rift in the village. For as long as any of the elders can remember there was always a disputed to what to do with a new born force-sensitive, send them to the Jedi or keep them as a doctor. Seeing as my parents didn't know what to do, they said they would decide at my coming of age ceremony. I started working early in my life, and I have found it fulfilling. As to how I came into the order was that word leaked out my parents wanted me to became a Jedi. That rumor caused so much fighting that the leaders of the town eventually decided to just send me off to the jedi, before my coming of age ceremony, to stop the fighting. And that is where I have been every since. I may have said too much and for that I'm sorry."

Semi-out of breath the boy stopped, hopefully that would meet his master's standards. He also had hoped that he had not talked for too long, for him it seemed he might have over-done it a bit.

''No no it's fine, clearly you do not get to talk about yourself. Now tell me....How did you feel with all that attention payed to you when it was being decided where you would go?''

Dewbecca found this to be the most important part of ones training, his voice was still a calm ocean however he wanted to know these things. It was so very important when knowing how each individual jedi reacted, you could not simply have one method of training for every single padawan, each one was as unique as a star cluster.

He was about to answer within the first few seconds of being asked, but he decided to really think back to that time, before he could give a real answer. Keeping his eyes open this time, he looked past his master and began to rack his brain once more for information.

Finally reaching the point in time he wanted to go to he found that he didn't pay that much attention to it at first. It seemed like he just wanted to get away from it, that was why he worked. That thought had never occurred to him before, he worked to get away from things. Realizing that, started to form the answer in his mind, basically he thought it could be summed up in one word, uncomfortable.

Feeling he had the answer that was truest to him he began to speak, "To sum it up in one word, I felt uncomfortable. I didn't like how everyone was always scrutinized me, and used me as an argument starter."

Dewbecca could see the inners workings of his mind racing at a million miles an hour, clearly he did not expect this but he really should off, at the end of the day one did not simply leap into the training of the jedi, it was a long thought out process, but this padawan did seem to understand this...Hopefully in time his patience would help make him a great jedi..

"Hmmm, Indeed I imagine it did....However did it not make you feel special, like you were better then the others?"

As soon, as he heard the question, he really didn't know what to say. It was beyond Jalaes'len why being force sensitive would make him better than others. It was just something he was born with, to him it was just luck. The others who had not been born force-sensitive just weren't lucky at birth. That was no reason for him to be better than them. Jalaes'len didn't really see the why his master had asked him the question, but he trusted that Master Dewbecca had his reasons.

After his little thought process had ended Jalaes'len answered the wookiee's question, "No, I see no reason why I should consider myself better, just because I was born with something and they weren't, we are all equal in our own respects."

"Now that is a good attitude to have, I and many jedi have always seen being force sensitive as a gift to be used for the betterment of the galaxy, but that does not make us better...In no way are we better then others...."

Dewbecca sat down onto the soft carpet below there feet and crossed his legs, placing his hands onto his knees, he closed his mind for just a moment before he opened them again, pondering on the best way to continue.

"Tell me, what in your view should a jedi be? what do you see there role in the galaxy as being?"

His posture now fully relaxed at hearing he had answered his master's question correctly, he nodded in acknowledgment. Seeing his master sit down, Jalaes'len followed suit and sat cross legged across from the wookiee. The soft carpet felt good as he sat down, and his legs were now able to relax after a long stretch of standing nervously.

Getting comfortable, he listened to his master's question. The immediate answer seemed obvious, but his need to get things right told him that it was not always the obvious answer that was right. His first thought was that a Jedi should be a hero and always help others. That was good he thought, but he needed something more, something about the moral aspects. When he thought of a Jedi, he thought of a person with strong moral codes. Thats it they simple had to be good person.

Feeling he was ready to answer the first part of the question he came out of thought and said, "In my opinion, a Jedi just has to be a good person who is always willing to help others...." He trailed off as began to think quickly about the second part. Using what his master had said before, he found that a Jedi should just be a guide helping out people when needed.

Feeling he had thought it out well enough, the padawan answered the second part of the question, "In the galaxy, a Jedi should be a guide always there to help those in need."

Dewbecca scratched the bottom of his chin absent simplemindedly, one of those small strange mannerisms that he had picked up over his many years.

"Your first statement has me slightly puzzled as to your explanation, A jedi should help all those in need of help?"

These passages with a padawan were virtually important to Dewbecca, learning these basic and important things always help in the preparation for future training and indeed help the padawan to truly understand the means needed to help themselves.

"Basically, if help is needed a Jedi should do what he can to make sure that aide is given." Jalaes'len said, re-iterating his point.

He thought he had made his point clear, but then again one could never be too sure of things. Also there was the possibility that his master was doing it so that Jalaes'len could see something new about his statement. But if he did want him to see something it was beyond Jalaes'len. Hopefully he had done what his master had wanted.

"But surely if you indeed set out to help anyone, well in doing so can hurt others....Or if indeed helping anyone you could help criminals....Helping everyone is an admirable quality but one must be cautious of those they give aide to''

Dewbecca did not wish to catch his padawan out, to turn his words into being wrong but it was important that these small lessons of the mind were taught, learned and understood.

Jalaes'len knew that his master had made him repeat that last part for a reason. And even though given a second chance he was still wrong. He started pondering on his master's words trying to see where he went wrong. The first part made little sense to him, how could helping one person, hurt another? But as unbelievable as it seemed to the padawan, something in the back of his mind told him it was possible. And as for the second part he couldn't believe he hadn't though of that part in the beginning. Helping a criminal wouldn't help society, it would just further hurt it. As for the final part, he now understood, that one must be cautious in giving aide.

Nodding his head in acknowledgment, the padawan spoke up, "Sorry, Master for not seeing my error.... But before we move on, I cannot seem to comprehend, how helping one man hurts another."

"The galaxy can be a strange and wonderful place young one. One mans goal can seem honorable and admirable but it can have hidden motives or even the person does not know it could be doing harm to another"

Dewbecca paused for a moment thinking of the best way to word his next response...This was an important lesson and he wanted his padawan to truly understand this, it was virtually important.

"Helping people is one of the main goals off being a jedi but even with this we must show wisdom.'
