The "AK being better than a blaster" thing bothers me, with the Op clearly having a fundamental misunderstanding of what blasters are, how they work, and the armor used to defend against them. And the fact that physics and science in a Galaxy Far, Far Away don't cohere to real life laws. But whatever.
Oh, my sweet summer child...

I was playing KotOR II last night, and yes I know it's not canon anymore, but they have several weapons in that game referred to as "assault blaster." IIRC you encounter them mostly when dealing with Mandalorians, but that might just be a coincidence.Assault rifle, maybe. As there's technically no such term within Star Wars.
The closest thing is either "Blaster Rifle", as both the DC-17 of the Clones, E-11/F-11D of the Stormtroopers (Empire & First Order), and the 180AC the Rebels used are just classified as Blaster Rifles (or longblaster in the case of the Rebels) despite being used much like assault rifles, or if you want a more machinegun-y thing, you put (Light) Repeater.

Meh. The information seemed relevant. Also a video game.
You'd eventually run out of unique names for generic non-epic guns at some point. Can't call it "Blaster Rifle of +20 Damage" and still have it feel like a Star Wars RPG, after all. Video games are your WORST source of information for Star Wars, be it weapons, tech, and especially Force Powers.

Also yay, technology update stuff! I like the new rules.

One of the major problems was people started to use ballistics physics to make SW follow real world laws.
I liked the Mass effect 1 style weapon systems.Which doesn't work, especially with blasters, as blaster bolts don't drop or are affected by wind sheer, they don't (usually!) ricochet, and after a while the magnetic field that keeps the blaster energy/gas contained just fails and the entire thing dissipates into harmless electromagnetic radiation.
Also, on that note, Clay... will you still rely on ammo for guns, or use the Battlefront concept in that they basically have limitless ammo, but overheat after X amount of sustained fire and needs Y amount of time to cool down or the gun will either 1) engage safety features and lock down for Z amount of time, or 2) EXPLODE IN YOUR FACE!?
