Sith swords are particularly powerful dark side artifacts designed and produced by the Sith species long before the arrival of the Dark Jedi Exiles and the formation of the Sith Empire. The weapons themselves are forged using the dark side of the Force and radiate its energy, giving them abilities not seen in typical weapons of war.

History

Although the use of bladed weapons forged through the Force has a long history, it fell out of favor with the implementation of the lightsaber. Lightsabers are lighter weight, easier to handle and conceal, and are capable of feats not possible with any blade, whether forged from the Force or not. Force-forged weapons also fell out of favor with the Jedi due to the tendency to cause more grievous and permanent injuries with a traditional blade.

While the Jedi set aside their traditional blades in favor of the lightsaber, the Sith on Korriban and Moraband had not discovered such weapons and turned the science of forging with the dark side of the Force into an art. Producing customized blades for their Massassi warriors, the Sith mastered the art of creating blades imbued with the energies of the dark side.

As the Jedi Exiles reorganized into the Sith Empire, many discovered they preferred the feeling of cleaving through flesh and bone with a solid blade and took to the weapon, drinking in its more painful effects on their enemies in order to deepen their connection to the dark side.

Functionality

The dark side of the Force has been forged into the blade itself, allowing its otherwise non-lightsaber resistant materials to stand up to the plasma blades. By channeling the dark side into the blade, a Force user is able to cause the blade to cut deeper and stay sharper than a traditional blade. These effects are only applicable when in the hands of a Force user. Because of the sinister nature of this weapon and the natural tendency to cause deeper, more lasting, and permanent injuries, this is a naturally corrupting weapon for a light side Force user to utilize.

The blades initially forged for Sith are often far heavier than an average blade and unwieldy for humans and other species. With the influx of Exiles, there has been an increase in the number of blades produced that are smaller all the way down to knives and daggers, though the standard is still for a large, heavy warblade.

@Phoenix for the original article.

These are functionally identical to a vibroblade except they don't make the vibration noise. These weapons cannot be used by light side users without extensive corruption to themselves through both the dark Force energies within the weapon and the natural negative effects of such an "inhumane" weapon.
