Biography

What does it mean to serve?

To fight for one’s planet, for one’s Empire? To oppress the people of the galaxy, rule them through fear and pain, to quell rebellions and stamp out hope wherever it began to blossom?

I can’t say that I quite know what it means to serve anymore. I was drafted into service at eighteen, enlisted as an infantryman with my friends back home. I wanted to be a lawyer, you know. I applied for the Coruscanti Imperial Judicial Academy. I thought my scores were good enough to get me in, but the draft extinguished any hopes of that. Where another of my pals left after a few years to pursue his dreams of politics, I remained in. I don’t know what kept me in; maybe some kind of masochistic desire to fight for an Empire I hated? Maybe because I had nowhere else to go? Maybe, deep down, I really did like the power that came with it. Not like it mattered, in the end; there was no room for my own thoughts or free will in the Imperial war machine, and I was nothing but a number to them.

Most of that changed with the Mandalorians. I’ll admit it, I’ve done some things I’m not proud of to people who never deserved it. Most nights, I question whether I did was right or not. Whether it was the right decision to shoot that father, or hit that mother, or separate that child. I knew that I was a good guy; I was just following orders, after all, but the stuff I was ordered to do weighs heavily on my mind.

The Mandalorian uprising started showing me how weak my Empire really was. Time and time again we lost battles, slowly losing ground to an unstoppable military force. It didn’t matter if the empires were split or united – the Mandalorians fought us equally and won. I was there on Corellia when the Mandalorians rained fire and fury on us. We didn’t stand a chance, and I’m lucky to even have escaped that disaster. Each day was uncertain for us – would we be deployed to fight the Mandalorians and die? We spent many a night talking about how we’d avoid being killed, about how we’d desert here, or surrender and beg for mercy there.

Those thoughts came to an end with the Protectorate. The Mandalorians, led by Raz Solus, struck a peace deal with the Empire to make the Core independent. Most of us rejoiced, for we knew that our war was over, but few of us realized what would come next. A soldier without a war to fight is nothing; what did we do, now that we were part of the new Coruscanti planetary defense force? A lifetime of desk work and rooting out gangs sat on the horizon, and suddenly I began to wish for that constant conflict again. It’s funny, really – a soldier fights for a peace he can never enjoy. I guess I should’ve been happy; after all, now I wasn’t at risk of dying from a Mandalorian running me through.

A few years went by without much going on for us. We were still influenced by the Empire, but we didn’t fight in their wars much. As each month went by, we watched the Mandalorians beat back our former Empire until the Empire retaliated with the genocide of Mandalore. Some of us cheered, but I stayed silent because I knew what would happen next. Their vigor was renewed, and soon the Empress was forced to abdicate the throne in shame, only to be replaced by another ill-advised Sith who promptly dissolved the Empire. For the first time in five centuries, we were wholly independent, and yet, many of us were uncertain about our future. How long until the Mandalorians came and conquered us? We prepared to repel a Mandalorian invasion, but one never came.

Instead, the Republic rose from the ashes of the Protectorate, a new beacon of hope for the galaxy. The Mandalorians had not declared them an enemy, and soon many worlds began to join. All except for Coruscant. I left my home behind in favor of joining the new Grand Army of the Republic. I opted in to the green-to-gold program in the hopes of becoming an officer. I served underneath some cruel bastards, and I made a promise to myself that I would never cause the suffering they did. This new Republic was the hope of millions of free citizens not yet born, and I’d be damned if I saw this spark snuffed out.

What does it mean to serve? Well, maybe it just might mean something good after all.

Personality and Traits

Ryker is foolishly noble at times and dangerously optimistic at others. Having answered the call to service in order to be a part of something greater, he places prime importance on the wellbeing of others he’s sworn to protect, as well as those with whom he serves. Life as an Imperial foot soldier might have crushed his resolve, were it not for the dissolution of the Empire. Now, he seeks to bring about peace and stability in a galaxy rife with chaos and suffering. Maybe his aspirations are unrealistic, but selfless service is one of his core tenets, and he’d rather die protecting the innocent than live under tyranny.

Talents

Ryker possesses the typical repertoire of skills that all soldiers have. On top of extensive combat training, he is a subject matter expert on all things doctrine, as required by his new role in leadership.

He’s also highly interested in the arts and music and can play a mean piano. He figured it was something officers needed to know.
