DESCRIPTION
The RX-series starfighter is an aging platform, brought into the present era through a technological shot in the arm. Currently produced by Barancar Action Systems, a Tionese corporation which has struggled along for centuries at the edges of Galactic commerce, the design survived the bankruptcy and liquidation of Corona Defense Products, which produced the original RX.

BAS, having acquired the centuries-old design when it bought up some of CDP's assets, recognized the inherent advantages of the RX's construction. Originally a fairly mediocre snubfighter, the RX was designed with a great deal of internal space for fitting the bulky, comparatively inefficient components of its time. BAS recognized that with modern technology, it would be possible to enhance the capabilities of the old design, and set to work creating several modernized variants for different market segments.

The RX/5 is BAS's attempt to adapt the RX series to the "escort fighter" market segment. Though the external appearance has changed little since the days of the original RX, the internals have been substantially reworked, incorporating a number of refinements including a more efficient engine, more modern avionics, and most notably a class 4 hyperdrive and a navicomputer, allowing the RX/5 to travel between star systems without the aid of a carrier vessel.

Like most hyperdrive-equipped fighters, the RX/5 does sacrifice armament and sublight speed in favor of its range advantage. The hyperdrive and navicomputer take up a substantial amount of internal space, and draw a significant amount of power, limiting the RX/5 to only a pair of light laser cannons, a 3-shot concussion missile launcher, no stock shields and a top speed of about 90 MGLT. These are handicaps many are prepared to accept, however, and a skilled pilot can make up for them in various ways. In the event this isn't enough, of course, a pilot can escape their craft using an ejection seat, equipped with an inflatable survival capsule.

Of note, due to the similarities between vessels in the RX series, BAS has been able to provide upgrade kits to operators of the old CDP-produced RX fighters, allowing them to refurbish obsolete stock to the RX/5 standard for a fraction of the price of a brand new machine.

RX/5s are a relatively common sight in the Galaxy, commonly used by law enforcement agencies, private security forces and even pirates. They are known to be a favorite of rebels and other outlaw paramilitary groups, being simple to acquire, fly and maintain in the field, even under adverse conditions.

LEGALITY
Restricted. In civilized systems, pilots must be properly licensed or be members of recognized armed groups.

INTENT
To create a hyperdrive-equipped starfighter for anyone to use.

ADVANCED TECH
No. RX/5 starfighters are reasonably common, although being legally restricted makes them non-trivial for the average individual to own.
