It was early morning on Jedha, not long after daybreak, not that it mattered on a moon that was perpetually in a state of winter. Reuben tried to meditate, as he was so often encouraged to do but tended to neglect, after a failed attempt at getting back to sleep but still his mind was elsewhere. There would likely be people awake around this time, though not many, it was too early for the youngling training but soon the temple would bustle into life, or at least as lively as the small but growing order could be.

Taking advantage of the opportunity while he could, Reuben made his way to an almost empty room with windows lining three of the walls which was used for sparring and training in its peak times and was one of a handful of others like it in the temple. If nothing else, he hoped to be able to focus on training, keeping his mind engaged so it was too preoccupied to leave room for distraction.

He drew his lightsaber and began practicing swings from the Ataru fighting form, trying to get more power into the attacks as the aggressive style demanded which was unlike his preferred style which was somewhat more graceful and required much less brute force. The amount of agility in this fighting form was extreme and often included the use of the force to further augment abilities but it was difficult enough having to create momentum to get power into the swings except when used in conjunction with flips and spins and all manners of acrobatics some Jedi seemed to use.

Reuben spun on his heel a couple of times before producing a satisfactory swing towards the imaginary opponent. It was easy to see how this form could get tiring quickly with the sheer amount of kinetic energy needed to maintain aggressive offensive attacks, maybe this was the first thing he should've done when he was struggling to sleep.

Soran woke up early that day. He had only been back on Jedha for a few days after his mission in the Outer Rim. That mission had not gone the way he had expected but regardless could only be counted as a success. Anything else that would stem from it would have to wait for a certain green eyed mercenary to contact the Padawan with a meeting location. Until then it would be a case of keeping busy as a Padawan should. Training and meditation.

Soran had already meditated that morning, it was not something he ever found great difficulty doing, in fact it was practically instinctive for him. What had become obvious during his last mission however is that the young man should really brush up on his lightsaber skills. While he had managed to deal with his opponents without suffering any serious injuries he had required the help of the very same mercenary, whose green eyes he had trouble keeping out of his head, to defeat a particularly stubborn trandoshan.

As Soran walked through the halls he kept his thoughts centered on himself and the moment, rather than open to all the life around him and within the temple. There was no real chance of danger within this system, for the Sith to approach Jedha they would have to reveal themselves days before any ship could arrive in the system itself due to how isolated it was.

With his thoughts still centered Soran failed to notice someone was already using the training room the young man had walked into. Another of his fellow Padawan was within seeming to practice the sequences of Ataru, briefly reminding Soran of how he had used the Form himself in a desperate manoeuvre that had resulted in a few bruised ribs but days ago. Immediately realizing his mistake Soran spoke up. “Apologies, I did not expect to find anyone else wanting to train at this early hour. I will leave you to it.” With that Soran turned around and began to make his way out, unless the other young man stopped him or talked to him, he would attempt to find another room to train in.

Before he had became a padawan Reuben thought that lightsaber fighting wouldn't be very technical because ultimately you were trying to attack or defend which should be instinctive but he quickly learned that if you didn't know what you were doing and weren't confident in it then it would be easy to get flustered in the moment when fighting and that different forms of fighting could be more or less beneficial depending on the situation. Ataru was radical but could be effective against a formidable lightsaber wielding opponent.

Reuben sensed someone approaching but didn't turn to look, assuming someone might just be walking past or having a look but when he heard a voice he froze mid action and turned to the door where he saw someone standing. He put away hid lightsaber and called after the other padawan as he turned to leave. "Hey! Stay if you want, having a partner would probably benefit us both." Reuben suggested as he walked towards the other padawan to greet him. "I'm Reuben Azari." He said with a smile. The young man appeared to be a similar age which was ideal, they would likely be on a similar level although they were bound to have strengths and weaknesses.

Soran bowed his head slightly, returning the greeting of his fellow. “I am Soran, Soran Jace.” He said as he approached the other Padawan in the room. The two young men seemed roughly of age with one another, Soran however was a couple of inches taller and despite his lanky build and long limbs, seemed to have picked up a little more muscle and mass than Reuben. Closing almost completely the distance the taller Padawan agreed with the other. “I think you may be right. Perhaps a sparring session will do us both some good.” Soran attempted a smile, while the feeling was genuine and Reuben would likely sense as much, Soran was still not great at showing emotions, making it look somewhat awkward or wrong.

Regardless, with the formalities spoken, Soran moved to a rack were practice sabers were placed. While some of the more experienced knights and masters sparred with fully powered lightsabers it was not something Soran was generally willing to do. It only took a split second hesitation or mistake for grievous injuries or death to come from a lightsaber, and the Padawan simply did not feel like taking such a risk. Caution was the mother of safety after all.

With a press of the switch Soran ignited the practice saber, a viridian blade of green appearing. The taller Padawan took position in the center of the area and took a ready position. Soran chose the Bracing Stance, of his favoured Form III. He had found using this stance as opposed to the standard Soresu opening had it’s advantages. The held low blade in a two handed grip with the blade pointed up, the tip roughly at eye level, and dominant leg back ready to push forward was completely identical to the standard Ataru Guard. By either using one repeatedly or relying on an opponent’s own knowledge of lightsaber combat, this stance, created an element of doubt and confusion.

Soran looked at his sparring partner, trying to sense his intention and movement so as to move in a parry as soon as possible. Soran would stick to his defensive style and wait out for a mistake or for his opponent to tire out, as was the objective of Soresu. Of course it could be felt neither had forgotten the basic Force Shield any trained Force user had learned to put up when fighting a similar opponent, otherwise each and every duel would be fought using only the Force and lightsaber combat would have never gained any traction as a tool of self defense or battlefield combat.

Reuben was glad his offer was accepted, after all they all needed to help each other to improve for the greater good but besides that it was nice to have the company of another padawan. The Jedi tended to be humble people but depending on your confidence or the ability to not care what others think it was easy to feel disheartened by someone who appeared so much more skilled, not that they ever meant to have that effect, they wanted to encourage the next generation of Jedi to strive and achieve.

He followed his sparring partner to the training lightsaber and put his own lightsaber hilt down, swapping it for a similarly coloured blue training lightsaber. A sensible idea really, contact with the body would still hurt, nothing more than a bruise or burn but it would still help you learn so when under real threat you didn't make the mistake that could've cost you a limb or your life in training.

After joining the other padawan in the centre, Reuben drew his training lightsaber and took a stance typical of the Makashi fighting form, his preferred choice, a duelling centric form with a certain air of grace about it and with time and skill could allow for fluidity and unpredictablity which were rarer in the more aggressive forms.

If he had known Soran he would've known what his preferred form was and it would've been easier to predict what he would do but this was new to them both and in the style of a true duel both would likely use the force to aid them. Reuben couldn't discern what form Soran would use yet, it wasn't clear, however his own was quite obvious from his stance, not resembling that of a more aggressive form.

Soran would likely anticipate the first move but someone had to start and after a few moments of silence Reuben broke his stance and made a quick low swing towards his opponent's leg, a move that would leave himself open to attacks but at this point that wasn't something that worried him. Hopefully it would soon be apparent what form or forms Soran was using so he could gage a better understanding of what was to come and maybe even understand him as a person better.

Soran observed carefully as Reuben raised his lightsaber vertically in front of him in an opening stance. That was Form II Makashi, an elegant style focused, like Soresu, on an economy of movement. Unlike Soran’s defensive style however Makashi was an offensive one, focused on quick and precise blows. In a one on one duel it was probably the most efficient of the seven lightsaber combat forms. Though some would argue Djem So or Juyo could produce more power, Reuben; like Soran; by virtue of his build would not have the physical power to efficiently use these styles without heavy reliance on the Force.

Reuben opened with a sweeping low swing at Soran’s leg. In response the black haired youth pushed his weight on his front foot to brace and twisted his wrist to meet the blue blade with his own green one. The lightsabers clashed with a flash and the crackling sound of energy.

The two Padawans clashed a few more times in quick successions. Reuben swinging the precise and swift sweeping motions of Form II while Soran meeting the blade every time with his concise Form III.

At the end of the basic sequence of attacks and blocks the two young men spun around each other, their lightsabers twirling in front of their respective faces, before increasing the distance between each other. This was a way for the two of them to look over their opponent, sizing them more precisely after the opening sequence of combat.

With a better idea of Reuben’s skills in mind, Soran placed himself in the Soresu opening stance. Blade hand held back at head level, pointing at the enemy, off hand held forward in a seeming invitation to attack, while the dominant leg was held back along the same axis as the sword arm. This was the very core of Soresu, as this was but the beginning there was little need to be creative. Soran would stick to what he knew and stay on the defensive, keeping his senses focused on the other Padawan’s intentions and movements, until Reuben made a mistake or tired himself out.

It didn't take long for Reuben to realise his opponent was relying on Soresu, the very defense centric form, which was further confirmed by the familiar stance Soran took which would signal the second series of attacks. Reuben wondered what Soran's intentions were as he hadn't yet made an offensive move but the choice of this form rather than a more aggressive one gave an insight into the other padawan's character.

His opponent had successfully blocked all the attacks so far but they were just getting warmed up and since it was only training Reuben knew he could afford to take risks that he otherwise couldn't in a real fight.

Closing the distance between them with increasing speed, Reuben launched into the second round of attacks at a faster pace, hoping the other padawan might hesitate or lose speed, exposing himself to attack but Soran seemed to cope well with defending himself, this was obviously his preferred form.

After the flurry of attacks, he took a step back for a moment, trying to sense what Soran planned to do but Reuben's mind wasn't clear enough, he was thinking about how to catch the other padawan out but he wasn't familiar with the weaknesses of Soresu, he would rely on human error for now.

Quickly launching into another attack, Reuben feigned a blow at his opponent's upper body, breaking form, but instead went for the hilt of Soran's lightsaber, a move intended to disarm which was often the first port of call in a duel for a Jedi. Now he would see how quick his opponent's reactions were.

Soran focused entirely on reuben and his movements. The other Padawan was obviously well versed in the skills of Makashi, his movements were controlled and precise, striking with minimal effort and almost no extraneous movement. Soran’s own style did not waste motions either and any move was used to keep the momentum of the barrier of blades that was Soresu.

The room shined with the reflected blue and green hue of the two young Jedi’s lightsabers. Flashes of white almost like lightning strikes added further illumination each time the blades clashed with one another. Soran felt Reuben become more aggressive, it was risky and could push him to overextend his attacks. Or it could just be bait, trying to lure Soran into an attack of his own and forgo his own defense.

The two took another step back from each other, marking the end of their second sequences. The two looked at one another before resuming the duel with their respective basic stances.

Soran saw Reuben launch an attack towards his upper body and moved to block; yet as the motions begun, Soran saw his fellow Padawan break the normal Form II motions and twist to swipe directly at Soran’s hand and lightsaber. This was very risky, if Soran was fast enough he could step in and attack at Reuben’s chest directly, but if he was too slow that hit aimed at his hands would his Soran’s neck or chest instead.

Soran opted not to attempt an offensive move this early in the duel. He would stick to the core of Soresu. Thus instead of trying to close in, Soran took a long step back away from his sparring partner, opening his arms wide to the side and let Reuben’s blue blade pass right in front of him.

This time Soran took the bracing stance again like he had in the first part of the fight. However his plan was slightly different this time. He had shown his disinclination towards offense, it would be natural for Reuben to assume Soran would so keep on the defensive. If Reuben once again tried to go on the attack with an extra aggressive opening, rather than bracing Soran would take advantage of the stance use it as an Ataru guard and attempt to flip over his fellow Padawan and take him by surprise. If all went well Soran would be able to strike a blow at his opponent's back. If Reuben decided not to press his attack aggressively however Soran would just keep focusing on defense until the other Padawan tried to overextend himself again.

The room was alive with the light that had begun to seep in from outside and the hiss of lightsaber on lightsaber but was otherwise quiet except for the sound of the occasional shuffle of feet.

Soran had shown nothing but an inclination towards defensive moves so far which had been working well in his favour but perhaps he was trying to create a false sense of security or maybe he was just trying to outlast Reuben, two very different scenarios which would require two very different responses but either could be wrong.

Reuben frowned for a moment after his failed attack out of momentary frustration with himself but the expression left as soon as it came and he regained his composure, he would rarely get angry but he often got frustrated with himself because of the high standards he held himself ip to.

Reuben calmly approached Soran and mimicked his stance, lightsaber tip at eye level and dominant leg behind him, making it unclear if he was opting for offence or defense until he launched into attack with powerful swings, clearly laying out the foundations of Ataru, a less familiar form but if there was any time to practice it would be now.

Reuben hoped the other padawan would hesitate or make a mistake otherwise it would turn into a test of stamina and he would be sure to lose at this rate but each blow so far had been met with resistance from the other lightsaber. He knew that if he were to overpower Soran he would likely need the aid of the force to get power beyond what his strength would allow.

Soran observed carefully. Reuben shifted his stance into one matching Soran’s own. The black haired youth’s strategy was turned right back on to him. Soran could not know if Reuben was bracing to use Soresu or getting ready to strike with Ataru.

The two young men circled each other for a short bit. Neither moving in for the attack yet. Soran started to think his opponent might indeed be waiting for a strike and had adopted a defensive stance, it was then that Reuben decided to rush in, closing the distance in an instant. The other Padawan had enhanced his speed and power with the Force, the telltale aspect of Ataru.

Soran barely managed to step out of the way of the furious blows before gathering the Force in himself as well and attempting to jump and flip above Reuben so as to land behind him and strike. This was one of the risky moves of Ataru, if executed properly it was almost impossible to parry. If the timing was off however one could either be cut down in mid air, or the two fighters could cut each other down at the landing. It was all a matter of skills and speed.

Soresu was a valuable skill to have but sometimes it had the problem of prolonging a battle and relying on stamina to claim victory but it seemed to be working in Soran's favour so far so Reuben knew he had to try something radical to break through his defences.

Reuben watched in surprise as Soran flipped over him and whipped around to meet his blade at the landing but was met by a lightsaber to the chest. He instinctively knocked the lightsaber away with his own at the feel of heat from the contact and took a step back to distance himself from Soran. There was a burning sensation for a moment before it dissipated, leaving a small mark on his tunic. Layers of clothes may have been protecting him now but with a fully powered lightsaber that mistake would've meant certain death.

Determined to get on par with the other padawan, Reuben didn't waste any time and stepped towards Soran, launching into another series of attacks utilising Makashi once again since Ataru didn't appear to be working in his favour but maybe that was more the reason to practice.

Now Reuben knew that Soran was willing to attack and appeared to be waiting for opportunities to do so, he would wait to see or possibly sense what his opponent might want to do. He attacked with energy conserving, short swpies at the other padawan, making extra use of his footwork to help with unpredictability.

Soran's risky attempt had worked. As he spun and flipped above Reuben the slightly younger Padawan swung his blade and hit the other one in the chest. Had this been a real fight, Reuben would be dead on the ground, almost bisected in two.

As Soran landed on his feet, he watched Reuben once again place himself in the Makashi opening stance and come in for a renewed assault. This was technically round two Soran supposed.

The black haired youth once again extended his arm in the telltale Soresu opening stance. No tricks this time, pure basic skills. Soran would keep relying on his defensive skills and wait out his opponent. Reuben had already been practising since before Soran even arrived in the room, by all logic the Makashi practitioner should tire himself out before the Soresu one in this case.

Though Soran had to admit to himself it had been twice now that mixing Ataru in with Soresu had served him very well. Most combined the powerful counterattacks and swings of the Djem So with Soresu. Form V had after all derived directly from Form III and the two merged into another well. Yet Soran did not feel he had the physical power needed to use Djem So efficiently, perhaps with greater mastery of the Force and practice in using it to enhance himself, some Ataru moves and acrobatics would be a nice addition to his style.

Though before any such ideas came into practice one would have to fully master their basic styles, which Soran felt he was still far from doing.

It appeared like Soran was inviting a test of skill versus stamina, if he was capable of holding his own consistently throughout the duel then he would be sure to win but if Reuben could find a way to break those defences then it could swing the battle more in his favour, only Soran had not missed a beat so far, he was annoyingly exceptionally good at defending.

Reuben thought he might have to rely on a mistake on the other padawan's part to stand a chance at defeating him which gave him a small amount of hope despite being disheartened by being struck, however likely it was. All he knew was that eventually he would be the one to get fatigued first and the only clear opportunity to strike had been missed. This was the first duel like this he had ever done, most people to attack Jedi did so on the offence rather than the defence but this was a learning curve.

He showed no wavering of stamina for a while since Makashi wasn't particularly energy consuming but his attacks began to gradually slow down although he was still highly alert in case Soran were to try anything again, his attacks were becoming more noticeably spread out. Reuben was relying on his own intuition as this type of fighting was not something he had covered so far in training but likely would do soon if he messed up worse than before.

Soran kept his defense up to the best of his abilities. Reuben was definitely a skilled attacker, not only that but Makashi was not a physically intensive style. Simply planning on waiting out the fatigue of the opponent was a valid tactic when your adversary was either using a physically intensive combat style or was simply not capable of sustaining the effort.

Reuben was neither and Soran wondered. In a real fight to the death, how would he deal with an enemy he cannot outlast? One way had been the trick he had already used, to lull one’s opponent in a false sense of security by sticking to an obvious pattern and changing it to use a decisive strike, it had worked on a trandoshan days ago and on the fellow Padawan moments earlier.

Yet that was still dependent on being able to keep the defense up effectively for a long enough time. What of the case when one could simply not last long enough in the defensive to create the opening? The question Soran supposed, had been the reason Form IV and V had been created.

Though he had always been loathed to try and practice it seriously, perhaps now was as good a time as any. As Soran blocked one of Reuben’s blows, rather than move in yet another defensive swing of the lightsaber, Soran used the Force to strengthen himself and swung in the opposite direction in a counter strike. The move was unexpected but very easy to see and Reuben could simply block it easily and counter in turn. Yet again Soran would move from a block to an immediate Force enhanced counterstrike, forgoing his familiar Soresu for the powerful blows and counters of the Djem So. Let’s see how that goes.

The duel had been going on for quite some time now and Reuben knew his best chance at making a successful move would be a distraction or trick of some kind, carrying on as he was just wasn't going to cut it. He could switch to a defensive form and conserve energy but then the duel would be even more prolonged and he was beginning to get restless.

The counter strike was unexpected but not totally surprising, Reuben was already on high alert and and just about managed to catch the blade on time with his own, straining against the strength Soran had applied to the blow to stop his own blade from being forced back into himself which was close to his shoulder until Soran made another attack which Reuben met more quickly after anticipating it because of the first attack but still struggled with holding the lightsaber back.

Having to defend himself from such powerful attacks aided by the force was making him become fatigued more quickly. Reuben thought that if he didn't gain any ground in the duel now then he would have to accept defeat because he couldn't see any other way for the battle to swing in his favour. He was getting disheartened but knew that next time he would be able to come back stronger.

In one last attempt at getting a strike in, Reuben once again used sweeping swings in a smooth, flowing motion and advanced on his opponent, putting his body weight behind the attack and to try and push Soran back when the blades connected to add pressure. He went in for an attack above Soran's head but swung the blade down quickly in an arc towards the other padawan's upper arm, leaving his own body exposed to attack but he hoped the benefits outweighed the risks.

The two Padawans clashed a few more times the sounds of their heavy breathing starting to be audible over the constant buzzing of the lightsabers. Reuben had managed to parry the sudden counters of Soran’s relatively poor Djem So. His skill in the style was far from satisfactory but it seemed he was at least capable of putting a decent amount of power behind his counterstrikes by using the Force.

Yet the change of style did not cause Reuben to falter of fail to defend, in fact it caused the other Padawan to push his attacks even more. The two young men were trading blow at a blink and you will miss it speed by the time Reuben went for a wide swift swing to Soran’s arm. Sadly Soran’s lack of practice in Djem So had left him in a position where he could not block the incoming attack, his counter had just been too slow.

There were two options present, Soran could attempt to jump out of the way but leave himself to another attack as he did so, or he could try to press his own attack at Reuben’s arms. It would be unlikely he would manage to hit the other padawan before the blue blade hit his own arm. But the strike could possibly cause Reuben to step back and stop his own attack. That or each of the two Padawan’s respective attacks would hit at the same time effectively ending the match in draw as the two would cut each other’s arms off were they using fully powered lightsabers.

As the intensity of the duel grew, apparently so did Soran's willingness to use other forms of combat, namely Djem So, a wise choice, which incorporated offensive moves into the former Soresu. Using the force to aid his strikes had definitely been effective, Reuben had only just managed to hold the attack off, his own lightsaber had been inches from himself, any later in the duel and he wouldn't have had the strength to keep Soran back.

Reuben's counterattack succeeded... to an extent. He felt the contact of his lightsaber on fabric but at the same time felt Soran's lightsaber hit his own arm and swiftly took a step back to get out of arms reach before retracting his lightsaber, signalling the end of the duel. Reuben supposed he had technically lost the first time he was hit but it was the learning that was important, not the outcome, as long as the learning would lead to a different outcome in a real scenario.

It had been an interesting duel, to say the least, which had highlighted areas he needed to work on, mainly combat against defensive styles which were unusual to come across when duelling a user of the dark side of the force who would likely use aggression in aid of their attacks, the defensive form was more typical of Jedi but it was important to know nonetheless, it was an advantage to be well-rounded.

"Good duel." He said, holding a hand out to the other padawan while catching his breath, he could see himself working with Soran for years to come, beyond their padawan training, should both make it that far and perhaps even becoming friends.

As expected, the two Padawan’s lightsabers met each other’s arms in unison. The second round of the duel was thus marked, a draw. Soran stepped back away from the blow as he felt a tinge of a burning pain where the low power blade met his arm and powered down his weapon as he saw Reuben do the same.

The brown haired young man extended his arm at Soran, who did the same in turn giving a firm nod as he replied. “Indeed. Your skills in Makashi are impressive, I do not think I would be able to outlast you if you have not previously exerted yourself. We should do it again sometime.”

With a firm handshake and bow to Reuben, Soran walked back to the weapon rack where he placed the practice saber back.

A fair amount of time had passed since the two began sparring and Soran could hear the sound of activity coming from the halls as the temple began to come alive. It was now time for a meal and a shower before moving on to the daily duties of a Padawan.

Turning back to Reuben, Soran thought about the masters telling him to try and socialize more. “Would you like some breakfast?” He asked the other Padawan, this could be a chance to start knowing someone in this temple.

"Really? Your Soresu was the most impressive, very difficult to break through your defences. Yeah, definitely." Reuben replied. Soran had certainly been a worthy opponent, difficult to beat and even then Reuben technically lost if you were going by the number of strikes to the opponent.

Reuben retrieved his own lightsaber and clipped it back onto his belt before rejoining Soran. "Of course." He said with a smile, walking out into the hall with the other padawan in one of the busiest times of the day in the temple. For many this was a home so this was where they woke up each morning before carrying out their day-to-day duties.

Reuben kept to the left as he walked, out of the way of everyone walking the opposite way in the corridor. "How long have you been training for?" He asked, hoping it was one of the least personal questions to ask. The last thing he wanted to do was upset Soran or bring up something from his past that he wasn't comfortable talking about but Reuben thought he would be able to sense a change in mood if that happened so he would know when to stop.

As the two Padawan walked Soran tilted his head towards Reuben as the other young man asked him a question. "Just short of five years. I was picked up by the Jedi soon after they began to resurface in the galaxy." Soran let a pause pass as the two kept walking before asking a question of his own. "What about you?"

Soran would listen carefully to Reuben's words, showing he wasn't simply asking for the sake of being polite, the best way to socialize was to get to know someone wasn't it?

The two would eventually arrive at what served as a mess hall in in the temple. Little more than few strewn about tables besides an ill equipped kitchen. The food was alright, but Jedi were not known for their culinary prowesses. The breakfast was little more than basic porridge and a fruit. Soran didn't mind too much, he grew up on a ship and having access to proper food as opposed to basic travel rations was always going to be a plus to him.

The two would sit down at a table and eat as they spoke. Or rather the closest approximation of a chat Soran could really manage. "Have you been on proper missions yet?" The black haired youth thought of asking. Reuben was at least as capable as Soran so it would stand to reason he had but sometimes the masters had their reasons why one would go a mission or not, Soran having only been on one prior.
