RORIK GREY

tumblr_mh531zkDjg1r1o2tjo4_400.gif

NAME RORIK GREY AGE THIRTY RANK JEDI KNIGHT - JEDI CONSULAR

PERSONALITY

Rorik is a complex man, no doubt about it: born into poverty, later traded into slavery, fighting an endless series of wars before reaching puberty - suffice it to say he's been dealt his fair share of abuse. A more polite account of his temperament might suggest that he's dealt with it well, quietly toiling at a better tomorrow, head held high; alas, Rorik's pitfalls have, at times, given way to a violent temper and the less-than-necessary loss of life.

To describe Rorik Grey as "a good man" would be generous - more apt, then, to suggest that he is a troubled man that does good. Spending some of his life with the Jedi Order and more of it abroad, Rorik has been taught the necessity of diplomacy and the value of life, and learned of the cruelty of men and the lack of justice throughout the galaxy. Whether or not Rorik is a Jedi any more is questionable, at best, but it's fair to say that he carries on the craft of aiding strangers in need.

He is educated, resourceful, and compassionate; driven to accomplish his goals - no matter the cost - and empathetic to a fault. Foiling this, Rorik is prone to bouts of rage, even more prone to melancholy and depression, and often uncommunicative when distressed. Those that know him intimately, however, would describe him as well-intentioned, and as having a good heart.

INVENTORY

Rorik is - and has been for many years - a galactic vagabond; wandering across the galaxy, righting wrongs and bringing justice to the downtrodden, doesn't leave a lot of room for excess baubles and trinkets. The young Jedi keeps only a handful of permanent fixtures:

  • A modest lightsaber, the tool of his trade, with a violet focusing crystal.
  • Taskmaster revolver, with extra slugs.
  • An old, worn, wooden pendant.
  • Another necklace, brass, with a symbol - meaningless to most - inlaid across its face.
  • A half-dozen credit chits with varying sums of money.

The Jedi has, during his career, forged three separate lightsabers; the first, green, with the aid of his singular Jedi Master, a Bothan; the second, orange, with the aid of the former Grand Master of the Jedi Order, Ebberla Daw; the third, violet, with the aid of his friend and mentor, Orlaan Ghess. Though he carries the latter, both of the former 'sabers have been lost or destroyed, presumably never to be seen again.

ABILITIES & TRAINING

tumblr_n7hel86dAk1r6845ho5_250.gif
Enslaved in his youth, Rorik learned to lead and inspire others from a young age. Freed from his shackles, the boy became a Jedi Padawan at eleven standard years, under the tutelage of a Bothan Jedi Master. In his youth, Rorik neglected his physical training, focusing instead on his powerful connection to the Force: Rorik has always been gifted at telekinetics, alongside being a powerful empath - but where his talent has always shined the brighest is healing. Rorik is one of the most gifted healers of his generation, and the young Jedi has spent more than his fair share at the front line of a war treating the wounded soldiers of both camps.

As an adult, Rorik has focused on the more physical aspect of Jedi training, walking the path of a Niman practitioner - or the Diplomat's Form. Learning everything and focusing on nothing, Rorik has acquired the basics of Shii-Cho, Makashi, and Soresu, but mastered none of them; as such, he as an incredibly versatile combatant, deadly against blaster-wielding opponents, but generally outmatched by Force-sensitive foes that have focused on more aggressive forms. Rorik is also a talented marksman, proficient with rifles and carbines but most talented with a pistol - preferably a slugthrower, at that. He also has some experience with larger ship-based weaponry systems. Regarding hand-to-hand combat, Rorik is an amateur in the art of Echani combat - but a considerable threat, nonetheless.

Combat aside, Rorik has always been a tinkerer, fascinated with machinery and its internal workings; he is a talented mechanic - from droids to swoop bikes to ships - and isn't entirely useless when it comes to slicing, either. Having spent much of his life on the run, Rorik is almost more comfortable in space than he is on solid ground, and has become an adept pilot - though he does not currently possess his own ship. Due to his time in the secretive Jedi Shadows subgroup, Rorik is also versed in the art of stealth and subterfuge, persuasion and manipulation, and masking his own Force signature.

Per miscellany, Rorik is skilled in the art of heavy alcohol consumption, a decent wordsmith, and fond of horse riding.

BIOGRAPHY

tumblr_n7hel86dAk1r6845ho1_250.gif
The underbelly of Coruscant is a harsh and desolate place for some; so far from the prying eyes of the bourgeoisie upper-class of the megalopolis, gangsters are given free reign to do as they please. It is, one would think, the least likely place to seek out the seed of life, freshly born – and, doubtlessly, the last place that it would find nourishment. Born in 993 ABY, Rorik Grey – despite having the frail and unassuming appearance of an eight weeks' premature infant – managed to murder his progenitor. In poor health herself, and nursing more than one addiction, Rorik's mother suffered massive internal hemorrhaging and died shortly after giving birth. Needless to say, Rorik's father (no less saintly than his dearly departed wife) lay the blame at his newly born son's feet. It is a wonder, in fact, that Rorik came to quietly celebrate his first birthday – or any thereafter.

Never physically abused, Rorik suffered invisible mental warfare from his father; more often than not he would find himself starving at the end of a day – and would find himself scrutinized by his father for Rorik's own inability to find work to support the two of them. “When I was your age,” he would say, “I worked the third shift in a factory, crankin' out droid visual receptors by the bucket load,” supremely confident in his recollection of intensive manual labor at the age of four. Luckily, Rorik managed to find unspeakable solace in maintaining a distance from the grungy tenants in which he and his father lived: often, he would spend his entire day at a free med clinic a couple of blocks away, helping in any way that such a young boy could. He grew to love his time there; the simple jubilance bestowed by helping another being was inexpressible. Fashioning his demeanor after the cool, calm, unbreakable spirits that were freely employed by the clinic, Rorik became an unshakeable, “never let 'em see you sweat” soul. Able to calmly reason with others, he became the settler of many disputes among children in his neighborhood – he was, in fact, respected by those children much more senior than himself.

Rorik's father, sadly, could not maintain; a habitual gambler and alcoholic, he soon gambled away his very last credit chit – and, in turn, lost his son. Many years later, the man would find little remorse in this final act of betrayal to his late, beloved wife – for remorse is not an emotion that kindles within the hearts of dead men, long since having shucked away the souls from their bodies. Kal'athra, a much feared and somewhat respected Huttese crime lord, extended his influence over many debts in lower Coruscant. This included the capture of Rorik Grey, for reneging on debts accumulated by bis deadbeat father. It is true that the sins of the father need not be visited upon the son, but in Rorik's case, they were visited tenfold. Taken to a glorified labor camp in the wards of Coruscant, Rorik found himself put to work – typically for an excess of sixteen hours a day – vis-a- vis manual labor. He would suffer under the thumb of Kal'athra's gangsters for many years.

Et lux in tenebres lucet; the brightest of lights cannot be extinguished by the darkest shadows. Rorik would find some form of prosperity in the labor camps. The virtually enslaved workers needed leadership and guidance, and after three years of witnessing the disenfranchised slave away, Rorik brought the children together as best he could; the self-titled group – the Young – began to work in secret to undermine their captors and support each other. Through clandestine operations, goods would be smuggled in to the Young to barter with the least loyal thugs working for Kal'athra the Hutt, who would provide food, clothing, and blankets for the workers – as well as low-quality medical assistance, when necessary. Rorik, having assembled the Young through perseverance and hard work, was respected by the multitude of workers; even the eldest of them, reaching thirteen and fourteen, looked to Rorik for advice, help, and to settle disputes in-camp.

While conditions had improved by Rorik's tenth birthday – cementing his sixth year in captivity – they were not perfect. Kal'athra, in his old age, had become unstable and irrational; his increased activity drew the attention of the Coruscant police, who – in conjunction with a Jedi strike team – raided many of the Hutt's labor camps. Rorik and his impromptu kinsmen were rescued by a Bothan Jedi Master, whose name and deeds will be primarily lost to the passage of time, regardless of their significance. The majority of the workers were relocated to numerous care programs – but nearly a week later, Rorik found himself still in an isolated, but comfortable, state of medical care. He did not understand why, despite the lack of severity in his wounds, he was not permitted to return to his father. After some time, the Bothan came to see him; he explained many things, among them that he believed Rorik to be sensitive to “the Force,” a mystical, all-unifying thing that was hitherto unheard of by the young boy. In short, he was told that he could leave his former life, and study at the temple to become a Jedi warrior – a keeper of the peace, a scholar, and a sage. What young boy in his right mind wouldn't agree – especially one with such a bleak life to return to?

It took Rorik roughly one year to understand his new position in life to be taken on for tutelage by a Jedi. While many beings spent much longer in the initiate cycle of the Order, it was largely due to the Bothan's intervention that Rorik took on the role of Padawan so soon; while he did excel in his classes – for the most part, at least – the Bothan had taken such a keen interest in the young human that he decided to enlist him as his Padawan. Their relationship counterbalanced fruitfulness with brevity; Rorik would only spend four short years training before the Bothan met his demise in the bombing of the temple on Coruscant, while Rorik was away from the temple.

Though it was short, Rorik's time with the Bothan yielded two incidents of note that have given the boy a very minute reputation amongst his peers. Only two years after the beginning of his training, Rorik and the Bothan were sent on a local mission to put an end to a group of youngsters terrorizing the under-class of the city; for Rorik, it was a return home, and seeing his neighborhood for the first time in eight years moved him unfathomably. He would be forced into action sooner than he would have liked, however; at the peak of their investigation, Rorik and the Bothan discovered that the group of hoodlums – responsible for several injures and one outright death – were several friends of Rorik's, members of the Young in Kal'athra's work camp. Rorik was forced into battle with an old friend, and in the process of disarming him, inadvertently removed the boy's hand; grievously injured, Rorik's old running buddy was taken into custody by Coruscant police. Deeply troubled and traumatized by the event, Rorik spent many days meditating on what he had done – forced, over and over, to relive the encounter with another child whom he had presumed was good hearted and well natured. This mission would help showcase, to Rorik, how many shades of gray the galaxy was painted in.

In another incident, Rorik and the Bothan found themselves on a mission to a planet on the outer rim of Republic space, hailed by a call for aid from the local government. In the process of their mediation, however, Rorik discovered that the planet's government, while not outlawing, did in fact tolerate slavery. In action driven by compassion, Rorik freed nearly two dozen slaves of varying species. As a result, the Jedi duo were promptly booted off of the planet for interfering in local affairs. Upon their return to the temple, Rorik was called before the Jedi Council, forced to explain his actions. While the council harshly reprimanded him for damaging relationships with the planet's government and the Jedi Order, no disciplinary action was taken due to the extreme circumstances of the situation. Both good and bad had been done, and while many Jedi had heard of Rorik's actions, the majority of them had highly differing opinions; some believed that Rorik was vindicated by the abhorrent nature of slavery, while others lamented the breaking of trust between the Order and those they protect. Regardless, Rorik felt justified, and – after speaking with the Council – rarely defended his actions.

Rorik, at fourteen, was in a state of limbo within the Order; the Bothan, his master for three years, perished in the bombing of the temple on Coruscant. Rorik, elsewhere at the time of the attack, was physically unharmed – but, of course, the death of his master had left an apparent rift in the boy's heart.

He was unable to find solace on Tython - and, within months, the Sith and the Imperium had sacked Coruscant once and for all, forcing the remaining Jedi into exile. Many of his colleagues had been killed, severely wounded, or even hung up their lightsabers and denied the Force in an attempt to lead normal lives, untroubled by the looming threat of the Sith. Rorik soldiered on, unable to deny the beck and call of the Force; instead, he forged a path throughout the Mid-Rim, Outer Territories, and even Wild Space, seeking to fill the void in his heart from the loss of his master and his people by aiding anyone he could find, delivering justice as frequently as he could manage.

Thirteen years passed between the death of the Bothan and Rorik's return to the Jedi Order, at their newly founded enclave on Anoth and Arbra. It sincerely felt good to be "home," reunited with other Jedi, and Rorik took to training with a vengeance, seeking to master his discipline of the Force and hone the skills with a lightsaber that he neglected during his youth. The young Jedi crafted a second lightsaber, attracting the aid of the Grand Master of the Jedi, Ebberla Daw, and spent every waking moment training or working to further the Order's goals.

Shortly after his elevation to the status of Jedi Knight, however, the Grand Master's personal war with the Sith Empress came to a head: a large Sith force - including Andraste herself - assault the hidden Jedi base on Anoth, forcing the shattered order to flee once more. Engaging in personal combat with several Sith, Rorik fought his way to freedom and escaped the onslaught with a large group of his compatriots.

Once the dust had settled, Rorik found that he could no longer believe in the legitimacy of this Jedi Order - he felt certain that it had lost its way, and suspected that it might never survive the years to come. With little fanfare - as, well, who was there to really report to at this point? - Rorik estranged himself from the Jedi Order, deciding that he might hitch rides into the Outer Rim and pick up the task he had set for himself after the sacking of Coruscant: to find and aid the weak, to ferret out injustice, and to live the nomadic life of a Jedi Knight.

New sheet for a new forum. Most of this is information that hasn't changed for a long time, rewritten for the new code; that in mind, the biography is too lengthy and the majority of it was written mid-2012 and late 2013, so it needs to be touched up. So does a lot of my coding work, I'm sure. Bear with me; I just wanted to force something out now.

I know.

No. Yes. Maybe. I am exceedingly mercurial.

EDIT: Quick question, for anybody that reads this and is more versed with the new coding: why is the text underneath ABILITIES & TRAINING not double spaced, as everything above it is? Maybe I'm just missing it - lengthy chunks of coding are not my forté - but I don't see anything that indicates how to change the spacing of posts.

Hey @Apocrypha ! I remember when Rorik was just a frsh faced, unbeareded Padawan! We made a thread between Piper and him, searching for a terminal in the jungles of Tython. Piper is a Knight in the order two now, and I think it would be interesting for them to meet again after not running into each other for about a decade.

I really like this character. The biography was well written, interesting, and definitely provides an explanation for his psyche.

You're too kind, friend. It sorely needs to be updated and, in part, rewritten.

One of these days!
