BIOGRAPHY

Born on the planet of Dorin in 141 ABY, Rhyss grew up much like a trillion other youngsters across the galaxy. His mother, Kal Marr, worked as an engineer at the local starport, repairing and maintaining the few ships that stopped by their piece of the Kel Dor homeworld. In a tale as old as the stars themselves, his father had supposedly been a freighter pilot, stopping back home for a quick layover back home before traveling the stars once more. Rhyss being the result of a chance encounter in the cantina, it should come as no surprise that he only ever knew the embrace of his mother. They didn’t have much, but they managed to eke out a major existence off tips and the double shifts Kal treated as normal.

But that was fine, Rhyss didn’t need such an unreliable man to teach him anything when he was surrounded by machines and droids as his playthings. As Rhyss grew up, this youthful fancy had turned into a keen interest and talent. And while the young Kel Dor balked at the thought of leaving his mother behind, he began to very quietly dream of one day traveling amongst the stars, perhaps even with a ship he had built himself….

Of course, fate had other plans.

When Rhyss was 10 years old, a sickness swept through the city in which Rhyss lived, rampaging through the lower wards and leaving thousands dead. Whether it was the result of Sith Sorcery, some careless spacer not scrubbing a shipment correctly or simple genetic mutation, over 5% of the population was dead in weeks, including Rhyss’ mother. Alone, heavily in debt and fearing catching the sickness, Rhyss signed on to the first freighter leaving the planet. It wasn’t exactly the glamorous adventure the Kel Dor had imagined, indeed he was little more than a glorified servant, but the job would bring him safety and a chance to explore the stars. Who could pass that up?

In simpler times, Rhyss’ gambit might have even been successful. However, with all of the warfare and strife in the galaxy, more than a few spacers had taken the opportunity to make some quick cash while most authorities were otherwise occupied. Instead of arriving at Ithor like Rhyss had been told, the freighter docked at a seedy port in Nar Shaddaa, where Rhyss was quickly sold off into slavery. The following years were harsh for the optimistic young Kel Dor. Before that time, he had never even left Dorin, so the unaccustomed, cruel weight of his anti-ox gear made the backbreaking work and abject despair of his existence even worse. But somehow, Rhyss resisted the temptation to embark on a suicidal chance at freedom. His chance would come, and he would only get a single shot at it.

The Kel Dor’s chance finally came several years later, a few days after he turned 14. All it took was a few moments of carelessness by a newly-hired guard, stepping away for a few seconds to grab some recaff. Rhyss couldn’t describe it, but he felt, rather than saw the guard move away as if by some mysterious force. Following his gut instinct, Rhyss sneakily picked a few locks and sliced a few terminals according to a predetermined plan, vanishing into the streets of Nar Shaddha.

Of course, it wasn’t that easy. Rhyss’ owner sent guards and bounty hunters after him en masse, unwilling to take even the slightest loss in their reputation. Thankfully, Rhyss had had enough of a head start to dodge most of them by wading through trash dumps and scrapyards, but he couldn’t do so forever. He was just 3 streets away from the starport when the bounty hunter caught him in a quiet alleyway, throwing him up against a stained wall with a sneer and a pair of binders. Desperation thicker than anything the young Kel Dor had ever known flowed through them. He COULDN’T go back! He WOULDN’T!

With a guttural roar, the Force abilities that had been dormant in him for so long burst out in a visible wave, slamming the bounty hunter into the far wall and shattering several of the unprepared man’s bones. Rather than taking the opportunity, Rhyss froze, horrified at what he had done. While much of the idealism had been bled out of him in the Nar Shaddaa gutters, he had never hurt anyone quite this badly before.

It was quite likely the young Force-user would have just stood there until he was recaptured, reported to the authorities or worse, if not for fate intervening once again. By sheer luck, Ses Anluss, a Nautolan Jedi Knight, happened to be nearby and felt the untamed surge of Force pouring out of the young boy. It was Master Anluss who managed to hide Rhyss away, managing to get the shell-shocked boy out of the area before more unsavory elements closed in.

It took a few weeks for the now-perpetually suspicious Rhyss to warm up to the Jedi, and even longer for him to agree to learn how to control the Force abilities that now flowed through him unhindered. Rhyss, understandably, wanted nothing to do with such powers at first, seeing them little more than a target on his back and a loss of control. It was only Anluss’ saintly patience and unwavering drive to help this young boy redeem himself in his own eyes. Finally, after several arguments, Rhyss agreed to be trained as a Jedi.

For the next 5 years, Rhyss trained hard to master what he could do, and to become a Jedi Knight his new Master could be proud of. It was definitely still a struggle, and his ability to manipulate the currents of the Force was spotty at best, but Rhyss was determined.

It was near the end of his apprenticeship when disaster struck. Rather than something grand and appropriately heroic, Ses Anluss fell to a freak blaster shot as he and his Padawan were clearing out a pirate den. Not only that, but it was a freak blaster shot not even aimed at the Nautolan: it was one that would have taken Rhyss’ life if he had not intervened. Traumatized by the loss of his master when his ascension to Knighthood was so close, Rhyss half-heartedly completed the mission and retreated back to Jedi territory to mourn his great loss…

Skills

Lightsaber Combat- Rhyss has always been a more physical fighter, and has only continued to specialize further into this aspect of his skills due to his difficulties with the Force. In fact, Rhyss has quite a bit of talent in this area, gaining a good level of proficiency in Form 1, Shii-Cho, and Form 6, Niman. While these particular choices have meant that he doesn't have any particular strengths in lightsaber-based combat, they do grant the Kel Dor much more flexibility and adaptability in the heat of battle compared to others of his weight class.

Force Powers- Rhyss has always struggled with utilizing his Force abilities. This is not to say his connection to the living Force is weak by any means, but just that he can't seem to manipulate it as easily as others can. While he can utilize most basic applications of the Force if he really tries, anything beyond basic Force-Based enhancement and prescience is a struggle for him, and more complex expressions of the Force are entirely beyond him for now.

Mechanical Skills- Due to growing up the son of an engineer and a lifetime of tinkering with various devices, Rhyss is naturally talented, if not supremely well-studied, with most conventional devices. This ranges from basic repair jobs to a basic understanding of how to fix the internals of a starship.

Languages - Rhyss is fluent in Galactic Basic and Kel Dor, and has a basic conversational understanding of Binary.
