This is a way for me to measure overall interest in this part of the Republic, so if you want to see the RepComs hitting the battlefield, post here!

Now, that said, here's a short list of ideas for discussion:

1) Should they operate much like the Commandos from the Clone Wars, in that they're highly trained and well equipped operatives who can do everything from fight as shock troopers to run cladestine assassination Ops? Or should they simply be a more elite fighting force, like Marines or Paratroopers?

2) Do we place them under either Navy command or Army command? This is more for flavor; if they are Navy, they'll have a Naval rank structure. [IE: Petty Officer, Ensign, etc] If they're Army, they're have an Army rank structure. [IE: Sergeant, Lieutenant, etc]

3) Designate them as a sort of publicly acknowledged version of S13. By that, I mean we portray them as the Republic's guardians, running around and blowing up anything that goes 'bump' in the night. This'd make the Commandos a sort of prestige unit, like the real-world US Navy SEALS or the Russian Spetsnaz. Thoughts?

4) The group's current name is "Republic Commandos", but would you all prefer something different, like Special Operations Group [SOG] or some such?

5) Jedi Involvement. This faction would be a prime candidate for allowing Jedi into its ranks, so how would you feel about fighting side-by-side with a Jedi?

DISCUSS.

1) The commandos from the Clone Wars were badass. However, S13 covers all the covert ops needs of the Republic or at least they should. Clandestine assassinations and stuff should totatlly be S13 territory. These guys should simply be the best of the best as far as soldiers go, versatile and deadly.

2) Army. Methinks they'd see much more active combat in planetside combat then acting as Naval soldiers.

3) Not so much a publicly known S13, but yes, similar to the SEALS. It'd be publicly known that it's a terrible idea to piss off a commando and they should have a good deal of prestige, you have to be damn good to get in.

4) It's cool as is, but SOG is pretty badass sounding too. Perhaps a different name could be thought up down the line.

5) I'm a proponent of Jedi involvement, we've talked about this recently, I think the two should work together as often as possible.

Me and CK have been chatting about this, and it has the Denzein's patented stamp-of-utter-approval-get-me-in-on-this-now.

I want. I want it now. That's all I'm here to say. Oh, and that I think my soldier would be a perfect candidate, provided he survives the Bothawui resistance movement. Actually, anyone who survived that would be hard as nails, so anyone who survives (provided they're mentally fit and able) could be considered for commando duty...

I'm all for it, my S13 agent's back story involves being in a commando like unit. I wouldn't mind if he had a hand in the commandos if they become a reality.

As for what branch they should fall under the army, since as CK already said they'd be doing a lot more ground side operations.

I think the name is good how it is now. Short, sweet, and to the point. I don't think we should have a whole lot of jedi involvement however, most of the time the Republic seems to lean towards keeping their military and the Jedi separate.

I know I'm not Republic, but whatever. It still sounds cool, so here's my opinions. :P

1. This depends on how you're going to portray them. If you're going to glorify the Commandos in publicity, then I'd keep them solely combat. If they're clandestine then that's a little 'dark' to be posterboys, and the credit should go to the Military as a whole.
2. Army, I'd think.
3. I'd make them known, but not publicized. If they're doing shady work then the more attention on them the less they can do.
4. Republic Commandos gives it that iconic flair.
5. The Jedi should be kept out of these guys. Jedi can assist in normal army and maybe work with them from time to time, but I'd keep them separate entities.

On the whole Jedi thing I'm all for them liaising with this. If we ever went up against, oh, Darksaber or something, we'd get raped. Also IC I think any elite republic unit would work with the Jedi, especially now we've seen that the Hutts work with the Bogan.

After some debate, the following has been decided about the RepCom's:

1: They will retain the name Republic Commandos. Officially, they will be commandos for the Special Operations Group, or SOG. SOG is a joint task force composed of both Army and Navy personnel, who are hand-picked by SOG's brass. As such, both Navy and Army ranks are used within SOG.

2: The Commandos report directly to the Chancellor's office, then to the Supreme Commanders, then to the highest ranking generals and admirals. Only the most senior of officers can call the Commandos to a fight, and only the most senior of officers can order them around.

3: They are a special operations unit. Their shinier operations are public knowledge; the darker ops are highly classified. While they occasionally support Republic troops by serving as elite infantry and specialists, most of the time SOG personnel are deployed to sabotage enemy facilities, wreck transport, assassinate high-ranked officers, scout enemy positions, and generally raise hell. As such, they are not as shadowy as S13 and do not affiliate in any way with S13.

4: SOG has been known to operate with non-SOG specialists on their mission teams. These specialists are chosen depending on missions; sometimes, veteran undercover RSF Agents are asked to tag along to help a team blend in with civilians. Other times, Jedi Knights, mercenaries, engineers, and others have accompanied them, with every specialist having a very specific role to accomplish for the team. That said, SOG does not constantly affiliate with other groups and should not be considered a resource that can be called upon by non-Republic forces.

5: SOG does not have a single unified gear list. They use whatever guns, clothing, and equipment that they need for a mission. As such, SOG operators and commandos often look more ragtag than other military units, but their effectiveness is multiplied tenfold as a result. SOG's poster boys, however, frequently don intimidating white combat armor for drills and marches. As more sensibly colored version of the armor exist, it's also sometimes used for actual combat ops, as it is very protective and boasts a wide range of features that any commando would find practical.

Lastly, the RepComs will have a commanding officer. The final candidate for this role will be decided later, but know that I'll only consider people who are more or less active for the role. Anywho, a write up is coming along slowly, so y'all will have your Commandos soon. Stay tuned!

I'mma -try- to get a write up done today. BUT, I make no promises. Assassin's Creed 2: Brotherhood is murdering my time. Still, I'll see what I can do.

As for the name; I also tried RESOCOM [REpublic Special Operations COMmand], SOLAG [Special Operations and Light Assault Group], SOLAG, and OTACON [Office of Tactical And Covert OperatioNs] If you prefer any of those, take your pick. As for RSOC, well... I think of commando socks every time I hear it. xD

I haz a question, is there any way I could transfer my S13 agent to the RepCom unit? He is more suited for that in his desc.

On the name front, I like SOG or SOLAG.

Or SPETZNAZ, but I think that's taken.

Totally getting in on this once I'm relieved on Bothawui. Hinty hint hint.

And you'll need to have RepSOCom Republic Special Operations Command. Or something similar.

This is what I have for the draft so far. If anyone wants anything added or changed, now's the time to tell me.

Special Operations and Light Assault Group

Overview

SOLAG is a joint task force created by the union of the Republic Army Rangers and the Naval Special Warfare Unit. Elite in every sense of the word, SOLAG’s operatives -more popularly known as Republic Commandos- are hand-picked from the best soldiers the Army and Navy have to offer. They are highly trained, well armed, and furnished with the best equipment available to the Republic. Their purpose is that of both a quick reaction force and a covert warfare unit; at a moment’s notice, SOLAG operators can be deployed to any theater of battle, from a cloak-and-dagger skirmish in the blizzards of Hoth to a full-scale battle on Denon, all inside a twenty-four hour window.

Purpose

Their purpose is to act as an auxiliary combat force to augment and support the rest of the Republic Military. Primarily, their functions involve reconnaissance, sabotage, covert assaults, and the assassination of key enemy officers. They have, however, been sent on undercover operations to a variety of locales, and have occasionally assisted the Republic Security Force when the RSF has been in need of military assistance, as SOLAG is an irregular military force and thus is not bound by traditional military or civilian, meaning that they can be deployed on Republic soil without the Chancellor’s direct approval.

As SOLAG circumvents much of the red tape bogging down the rest of the military, they are startlingly quick to get into the action, often arriving hours or days before their counterparts. This enables them to serve very admirably in their secondary role as an quick response force, in which they are called upon to defend against surprise attacks, terrorism, rebellion, and any number of other problems that the Army and Navy are simply too slow and clumsy to deal with.

Command Structure

The Republic Commandos, out of necessity, use both Army and Navy ranks. Due to the confusion that occasionally arises because of this, they have arranged themselves in a unique hierarchy where soldiers are not distinguished by rank, but rather, by skillset and experience. This has lead to the adoption of a alphanumerical ranking system, with three primary skillsets. A, or Alpha, designates a command post. B, or Bravo, designates a specialist, such as a comms expert or a combat engineer. C, or Charlie, designates all combat roles, such as assault infantry, snipers, and anti-tank weapons specialists. D, or Delta, designates all non-combat roles pertaining to logistics and support.

The second part of the ranking system, the number, denotes skill and overall rank. A soldier’s skill is determined by his capacity to work in a team, to give and follow orders, his knowledge of his duties, and his rate of success. His skill directly determines his rank in SOLAG. The numbers range from 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest. Here’s an example of how this works: A skilled soldier with a combat specialization is promoted to command a platoon. His rank would be between C5 and C6. Therefore, when taken in with his navy rank, he would be ‘C5 Petty Officer John Doe’.

Note that SOLAG operatives are generally assumed to be outside the usual military chain of command, and will often refuse or ignore orders given by local commanders. This is not out of disrespect for the rest of the military, but rather SOLAG recognizing that their missions take priority and they can’t let their operatives fall under the jurisdiction of any other branch.

Inter-Agency Cooperation

While SOLAG does not typically cooperate with other branches of the Republic on its missions, the Commandos have been known to request specialists to accompany them on missions where SOLAG operatives do not have the experience or training to handle a particular task. With the increasingly threat of Dark Jedi, this has lead SOLAG commanders to have an increased interest in requesting Jedi to accompany Commando teams on their missions, as a little insurance to ensure that the Commandos don't run into something that they are not equipped to handle.

Training

Each SOLAG Operative, regardless of his or her specialization, is required to undergo advanced survival and combat training. The grueling six month long basic training for Commandos ensures that only the best get through, and as the men and women going into basic are already the best, this ensures that each Commando is, simply put, the absolute best of the best.

Following basic training, each Commando goes to AMOS School, or Advanced Military Occupational Specialty School. It is at an AMOS School that the Commando will be forged into the best that they can be. As classrooms are small, training is harsh, and instructors very careful to give their trainees every last bit of information that they can, it is a guarantee that the Operatives exiting the AMOS Schools are almost every bit as skilled as their instructors. Almost.

Equipment

Much of what SOLAG uses is simply upgraded Republic Infantry equipment. However, due to very lax uniform and equipment regulations, Commandos often feel encouraged to ‘build’ their own combat kits that suit them and the mission. As each of these kits is customized to the battle and to the combat style of the Commando using that kit, the SOLAG operatives are far more dangerous than any ordinary soldier or commando. This immense soldier-level equipment flexibility ensures that Commandos are always prepared to finish the fight… And it also ensures that Commandos look far more rag-tag than the rest of the military, earning them a reputation as ‘Rebels’ and ‘Scoundrels’.

Vehicles

SOLAG does not use its own stable of vehicles. Rather, they requisition and customize vehicles and ships from the Navy and Army when they feel the need for one. As such, SOLAG has a constant supply of any vehicle they want - from a Summit-Class Dreadnought to a MD449 Swoop Bike.

They also need a motto. All spec ops units have a cool motto.

Mess with the best, die with the rest.

Only in death! (does duty end.)

In democracy we trust, for the Chancellor we act.

Fear no evil, we are fear.

We move forwards, there is no back!

Outnumbered, not outgunned.

Worship Denzein, for he is God.

Any of those fit, but I'm not sure what you meant by motto. Did you mean like a regimental motto something that would not look out of place in latin, or a saying that the soldiers had?

I tried to put a mix of both of those, although some could be both.
