The UN currently has 5 permanent members with veto powers in the Security Council: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. As time moves forward change occurs but is it the right time to reform of the United Nations Security Council?

The UN is dying. Let's face it. I don't think there's anything to really breathe life back into that organization. The real voice in the European Nations right now is that of the EU and it is actually making a difference from what limited knowledge I have on it's functions.

The UN was a good idea, but their handling of certain situations proves that adding other countries to the bowl isn't going to solve their problems. They either need to be abolished and a completely new organization be built or renew it with completely fresh blood and actually work together instead of shooting around the bush on certain issues.

To be honset we had been doing that since the civil war, that area of land has been known for the constant war that has been boiling for the past thousands of years. I fear that the genocide that been going on in Afirca is a bigger concern weapon sales, but the biggest crime of our new milliena has to be doing nothing about Rwanda.

Add Germany, Remove France and the Security Council, along with the other Organs of the United Nations, is not effective.

There needs to be a United Nations, but it needs to be aggressive. I mean, United Nations Peacekeepers? I laugh everytime I hear that term. They're sent in to keep peace but when they're shot at by the enemy they're not allowed to shoot back.

The un is over...the idea is good but it's done in a wrong way.

It needs a vast reorginisation...How I don't know....

But the un cnnot be aggressive because then it will be seen as another great devil by people.

As odd as it sounds, I believe that Ronald Reagan got it right by saying that the only thing that can truly unite the nations of this world is an extra-terrestrial threat from someone very far away and far more advanced than humanity.

I think the number one way for the world to be united is to find a fossil in space. Just think about reaction alone, finally NASA would be justifed and other nations will finally make their own space progam. The rivalry would be firce but it would be better to be united for some cause that could make man better then war.

and thats mostly a money program, Nasa, the EU, Russia and China are the only offical home bases of the space program,, and I do like the point that most of them do work together 90% of the time, though the problem is budgeting on all ends,, China is still infintile in there program but honestly I think it would be a good indication that when it comes to looking beyond the planet we are pretty united as a species.. Stupidest problem, again budgeting,

and more or less I love how things get released that would vindecate spending more on space programs, be them for enviormental defence ( yes there is weather in space, and some of the minor storms can devestate the planet, NOT factoring in things like Apophis or other rogue rocks...) the have found fossles on mars, but because they are basically " sand dollars " they really dont say much, just knowing mars has rain I think was big enough a push..

awh, but humans are a weak, arrogant species and very narrow minded

I know little of the UN, besides the fact its level of effectiveness is dropping into nonexistance. The problem however seems to be that not everyone wishes to act for the betterment of the human race. Greed and corruption might have something to do with it, but I get the feeling its simply because we have no strong leaders and clear cut goals to rally behind.

Perhaps it would be better to reform the United Nations from an organization that tries to keep peace without fighting. Into an organization thats first response to war is to quickly move against both sides with overwhelming force. If the worlds major powers united in this goal then we could end wars within days, hopefully the nations of the world would join to avoid having their countries smashed. Then again unity through fear is fragile at best.

All we need is someone or something to inspire us forward as a single race.

What do you expect them to do? Something like this:

"Hi we're from the UN Peacekeepers. We're here to help."
*The sound of a shot rings out across the countyard and the guy next to the speaker falls down dead.*
"Ok, we're come back when you are in a better mood. Hows 7 o'clock tonight for you?"

Yep religion can cause some things like a war (midieval times anyone? as a major example) but it can also cause hostility between normal people like (neighbourghs the one hates the other because they hate this or that religion)
